VIA RAIL BYPASSES BOMBARDIER FOR NEW BUILDS Via Rail has selected Germany’s Siemens over Canada’s Bombardier Inc. for a $989-million contract to build a new fleet of locomotives and cars for the rail corridor between Quebec City, Quebec and Windsor, Ontario as the Canadian passenger rail service renews its aging fleet.

The contract with Siemens will see trains built at its North American manufacturing hub in Sacramento, California with delivery to begin in 2021 for entry into service the following year.

Via Rail and Siemens also announced a 15-year technical services and parts agreement valued at $355.5 million.

ANHEUSER-BUSCH LOOKING TO MOVE FROM HOPS TO HEMP Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev, through its sub- sidiary Labatt Breweries of Canada, is partnering with the British Columbia-based medical cannabis company Tilray in a $100 million deal to research cannabis-infused drinks for the Canadian market. Anheuser-Busch InBev, the owner of more than 500 beer brands, and Tilray Inc, which sells products in 12 countries, said each would invest $50 million in the project to study non-alcoholic drinks containing cannabidiol, or CBD, which some claim has calming and healing affects, and THC, the cannabis compound known for its psychoactive effects. The Anheuser-Busch InBev, Tilray Inc alliance project is the latest entry by a major beer company into the cannabis business in Canada, which legalized recreational marijuana in October.
