MEANINGFUL MATERIALS Okobojo Creek Designs Written by Maddilynn Kallsen + Photos by Kayla Johnson At the heart of Okobojo Creek Designs is a love of the outdoors, creating one-of-a-kind jewelry inspired by the prairie, water, and the rugged beauty of South Dakota, says owner and creator Emily Kiel . “Each piece carries the spirit of outdoor tradition, hard work, and resourcefulness—values that run deep in our family,” said Kiel. Along with a love for her surroundings and the waters of Okobojo Creek in West Sully county (the company’s namesake), loved ones help drive Kiel’s inspiration when creating new pieces.

“JEWELRY IS NOT JUST AN ACCESSORY, IT IS AN EXPRESSION. IT IS A CONVERSATION STARTER. IT TELLS A STORY- YOUR STORY.” Emily Kiel

“The artistic creation process often feels like a mix of instinct, intention, and a little bit of surprise. We are inspired by our outdoor experiences,” said Kiel. “My husband and I have a ton of ideas that we lean on to get started.” Sometimes the couple is motivated by materials like stones or beads, and sometimes inspiration is found from landscapes, memories, or feelings, made with a thread of “wild energy” meant to connect, ground, and guide, Kiel says. Okobojo Creek Designs specializes in creating bracelets, anklets, earrings, and necklaces.

Creation Process Emily Kiel’s

GATHERING & ENVISIONING The first part of her process starts with collecting and researching materials, catering to current and future clients. REFINEMENT Shaping, polishing, and adjusting begins until it feels balanced and true to the Okobojo Creek Design’s brand. Recreation, readjusting, and refinement often take place during this part of the process. HANDS-ON MAKING She moves on to experimenting with texture, forms, and testing combinations of beads, stones, and colors. FINISHING TOUCHES Kiel says this is where the character of the piece comes alive and the beauty of the time spent on handmade work shows. A transformation that never existed before will now become someone else’s statement piece and “a piece of Kiel’s heart.”

Kingman Turquoise from Golden Valley, AZ, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise , Campitos Turquoise , Hubei Turquoise , coral beads, genuine Navajo Pearls from Albuquerque, NM, and freshwater pearls are incorporated into the handmade jewelry. Sterling Silver spacers are used as accents, helping accentuate and contrast designs. “What sets our work apart is the mix of meaningful materials and the handmade individuality in which no two pieces are ever exactly alike,” said Kiel. “Our pieces are rooted in the heart of storytelling.”

“THE WORK WE DO SHOULD REMIND OTHERS OF THE STRENGTH OF HANDMADE CRAFTSMANSHIP, THE IMPORTANCE OF CONNECTION TO PLACE, AND THE BEAUTY OF WEARING SOMETHING CREATED WITH HEART.”

The Kiels also use porcupine quills, Bison leather, brass, elk and deer burrs along with deer antler beads to create their pieces. Some of the jewelry uniquely uses bandanas, silk scarves, and Latigo leather. “Each stone, each curve, each imperfection tells a story of resilience and beauty,” added Kiel. “I WOULD LOVE FOR OKOBOJO CREEK DESIGNS TO INSPIRE CONFIDENCE, PRIDE, AND JOY IN EVERYONE WHO WEARS IT, KEEPING THE SPIRIT OF THE SOUTH DAKOTA OUTDOORS AND ALL ITS RUSTIC BEAUTY ALIVE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.”

Old MacDonald's

Things are looking a bit more spooky at Old MacDonald’s Farm in Rapid City.

“The Fall Festival at Old MacDonald’s shines, offering a pumpkin patch and plenty of family fun, all set outdoors with animals and fresh autumn air,” said Visit Rapid City’s director of marketing Dani Benne . Old MacDonald’s festival was started by owners Thane and Gina Rose , who purchased the attraction in January of 2014.

The 12th Annual Fall Festival will take place every Saturday this month with activities like wagon, train, and pony rides, a corn bin, playground, bouncy houses, Pick a Pumpkin , and more.

“The previous owner had the farm set up well. It’s a great environment for families and kids of all ages,” said Gina. After a few years into ownership, the Roses made some “needed” additions, including the Fall Festival event. “We lived in Minnesota for a few years, and there are a lot of fall festivals there,” said Gina. “When we purchased the farm, we wanted to offer something like that to the locals.” The inaugural event included bobbing for apples, fresh-baked goods, apple cider, wagon rides, a corn bin, and a pumpkin patch. To the Roses’ surprise, it was a huge hit. “We were blown away by the amount of interest, so we added a few more things—pumpkins, face painting, caricatures, a balloon artist, and some food,” described Gina.

Along with fall-themed activities, guests can also expect the typical Old MacDonald’s experience like the Billy Goat Bridge , bird aviary, pig races, and over 100 animals to have unique, hands-on encounters with. “The neat thing about Old MacDonald’s Farm is really the interaction with the animals,” said Gina. “You can pet, feed, and play with almost all of them.”

Animals include chickens, turkeys, emus, goats, sheep, llamas, alpacas, long-horn cows, donkeys, ponies, draft and quarter horses, and some pot belly/kune pigs. A special one-on-one moment for visitors is helping feed the animals. “We have bottle feedings where you can get hands on with a large bottle of milk and feed calves or sheep,” said Gina. “We also have our poultry house where you can hold baby chicks and see their growth from eggs in the incubator to the large chickens running outside.”

And just like an actual farm (with hundreds of guests during tourism season), the team at Old MacDonald’s takes pride in keeping the animals safe and happy and working together for general property upkeep. “We strive to be a clean, pleasant experience by having scheduled rounds, morning and evening chores, and a staff that cares about the animals,” said Gina.

Along with the festival, the Roses also recently upgraded their gift shop, including offering new treats like ice cream and a bigger selection of gifts and toys. “We are really excited about offering space in our store with our new addition,” explained Gina. “Guests can stay for a while and not be walking on top of each other any longer.” As the team prepares for the autumn event, they’re stocking up on things like merchandise, hot food and drinks, and pumpkins. “Pumpkins are really the best part, and you can paint them on site,” said Gina. Admission is $9 (ages 2 and under are free), and certain activities incur an additional ticket.

Gina says the best part of the Fall Festival is watching guests enjoy the farm and the changing season. “I love the feeling of fall—the colors,” said Gina. “We really get a kick out of seeing all the guests having fun, taking pictures, and making memories.” Since Old MacDonad’s is located off of Highway 16, visitors can add the Fall Festival to an autumn trip itinerary, since

it’s on the way to other popular Black Hills attractions. “I absolutely love how Old MacDonald’s Farm brings the tactile joy of rural life right onto the road to Mount Rushmore from Rapid City,” said Benne. “It offers a welcome, low-pressure, educational break from the big-name monuments in the Black Hills and Badlands , and reminds us how amazing a few cute goats and a tractor ride can be.”

ON THE MENU Cascata ITALIAN CUISINE Rooted in traditional Italian flavors, Cascata Italian Cuisine was created for guests to come together and connect over “a balanced, simple, and rustic menu.” “The inspiration behind Cascata Italian Cuisine comes from a passion for food, wine, and the joy of gathering together,” said Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown general manager Hristiyana Ralinova . Cascata is one of five restaurants in The Steel District and is located in the Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown. The original concept for the space was a Tuscan steakhouse, but Ralinova says they wanted to broaden the dining experience. “Instead of focusing on just one region, we chose to celebrate the rich diversity of Italian cuisine — bringing flavors and traditions from across the entire country of Italy to our guests, especially Mediterranean seafood dishes,” explained Ralinova. As the hotel has many local and cultural elements to it, the team says Cascata aligns with similar details and philosophies. One prime example is the menu, which uses locally-sourced ingredients that also gives a nod to the Midwest with regional staples like corn, while simultaneously staying true to Italian traditions.

“Through social seating, engaging artwork, collaborations with local partners, and live music during lunch and dinner, Cascata becomes more than just a dining venue—it’s a gathering place that embodies the Canopy philosophy of connecting guests to the neighborhood in meaningful, memorable ways,” described Ralinova. Executive chef Chris Hodapp describes certain thoughtful details throughout the

restaurant, including working with a local potter to create one-of-a-kind plates for their locally-sourced pork chop. Cascata also pays close attention to detail for their menus, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, some of the most popular items are the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes , Breakfast Carbonara , French Toast , and

the Steel Cut Oatmeal . "The Steel Cut Oatmeal is unexpected because it’s presented so well,” said food and beverage director Jeren Melius . “It may be our number-one seller." Frequently-ordered lunch items include the Chicken Parmesan , the Italian Sandwich , and Cascata’s hand-tossed pizzas.

"The large variety of items hits every palate for every guest we have, from the kids menu that offers pizza and simple pastas, to high-end cuts of meat, to more budget-friendly items, guaranteed."

Available for lunch, dinner, and brunch, pizzas are as traditional as the Spicy Pepperoni to the more adventurous Prosciutto with taleggio, arugula, cherry tomato, and saba. When asked about popular dinner items, Melius said, "Any of our South Dakota- raised, hand-selected steaks." An honorable shoutout included the aforementioned Duroc Pork Chop with black, garlic-herb brine, grain mustard peach glaze, caramelized cippolini onion, whipped potatoes, and broccolini. For house-made pastas, a go-to is the Lobster Tortelloni with herb-whipped mascarpone, charred corn sauce, lemon, and herb-fennel salad. "My favorite is the Lobster Tortelloni, fresh and full of flavor,” said Hodapp. “I’m a seafood person." Seafood, the team says, is also a standout.

“This has been especially popular during patio season,” said Ralinova. While 60-70% of their clientele are transient, the team says they have a lot of locals, and have built a relationship with The Steel District neighborhood. “Being located in The Steel District, we have the advantage of collaborating with tenants in the neighboring office tower and apartment complex, which has helped us build a strong base of regulars,” said Ralinova. “This summer, we’ve seen an influx of families with young children, especially with the opening of Jacobson Plaza within walking distance.” The restaurant is approaching its one-year anniversary, and the team is excited to celebrate. Some fun upcoming events in the mix are Oktoberfest , Thanksgiving, and wine and bourbon pairing dinners. The restaurant is also approaching its one year anniversary, and the team is excited for the milestone.
