DC Fencing Foiled again

‘Four!’

D ulwich College enjoyed yet another triumphant year on the pistes. An out- standing training programme led by our fencing coach, Marco helped our fencers to reach new heights this year at both individual and team level. An extensive training programme throughout the first two terms helped the boys to prepare for the biggest competitions on the fencing calendar. In March, Sameer Sunder-Rajan, Ernesto Chiappini and Alex Yang represented the College at the British School Team Championships in the U18 Boys Epee. Following a dominant performance in the poules, the boys faced off against The King’s School Canterbury in the final, sweeping them aside and taking home a well-deserved gold medal. The Public Schools’ Fencing Championship followed in April. Sameer, Alex and Ernesto all competed in the Boys Senior Epee on the Wednesday, qualifying from their first two poules with ease. The round of 64 saw the first ever Dulwich vs Dulwich fight in the competition, with Ernesto missing out but finishing in a very respectable 40 th place. Alex progressed through another elimination round before finishing 16 th . Sameer made it through to the final, setting up a rematch from the 2024 competition, unfortunately missing out on the gold this year, but finishing on the podium for the fourth consecutive year. Day two saw a field of six Dulwich boys competing in Sabre competitions. Arthur Sym and Joshua Petrou-Parkes fenced at the competition for the first time. Both had successful days and performed

exceptionally, showing real potential for the next couple of years. Robin Samuel, Enoch Yiu and Saverio Jones all fought valiantly in the Senior Epee competition, ending their Dulwich Fencing careers on a high with some outstanding performances. Ritvik Raghavan ended the day with a bronze medal in the Mount-Haes Sabre competition, defeating some very talented opposition on the way to an impressive podium finish. Away from the College, boys saw success on the international stage, with Ernesto, Alex and Sameer competing around the world, in various World Cup and Cadet events. Sameer was part of the GB Junior Epee Team that became the nation’s first ever European champions in Antalya, Türkiye. ◎

I n badminton , the U19s, led by captain Etienne Chen and supported by Araav Kachawaha, had a strong season, with wins against Eltham College and Hampton School but tough matches against Wilson’s and Whitgift, culminating in a successful inter-school tournament. Key players included Lucas Chang, Justin Fu, Aditya Kabra, Zezi Li, Zesang Li, and Brian Ng. The U16s also performed well in the National Schools’ Championship, with standout performances from Araav Kachawaha, Atul Venkatesh, and others, while U14 players including Brian Shang, Harry Morris, Vihaan Pathak, and Jayen Joshi contributed to the regional round. In ski racing , at the Canada Cup in Jasper, Alberta, we achieved record results, winning the overall plate along with 13 individual medals and nine team medals across slalom, giant slalom, and combined categories. In Wengen, Switzerland, at the British Schoolboys International Races, slalom was cancelled due to weather, but the team skied exceptionally well. Notable performances included Eddie Lyon- Lee finishing second among unregistered U14 skiers and fourth overall, while Thomas Watson secured eighth place in the combined time, and both Dulwich B and A teams earned silverware.

In cross-country, all Dulwich College age groups progressed to the regional final of the ESAA Cross Country Cup, with the Junior team finish-ing 11 th at the national final in Leeds. Henry Kucerov earned a bronze medal. The boys also dominated the borough and London championships, winning all but one category, with Caspian Holmes, Samuel Kemp, Zacchaeus Kelman, and Henry Kucerov making the London team for the ESSA National Cross Country Championships. Invitational meets were also highly successful, especially at the Ten Schools championships at Harrow School, where we won both the junior and intermediate fixtures. The golf team has had an encouraging season, winning six out of 11 matches, with three more to play at the time of writing. Notable achievements include Ed Brydon’s fifth-place finish in the Smarden Bell individual competition and victories over Westminster School and John Lyon School in the Swifts (formely HMC). With strong performances from players including Nathaniel Oram, Ethan Pippard, Max Page, and a promising group of younger players such as Ilyas Govers and Rory McCotter, the future of Dulwich Golf looks very bright. ◎
