A level & GCSE Treading the boards

A Level and GCSE students continue to create fearless, original work fuelled by contemporary theatre practice – includ- ing director Emma Rice and auteur Steven Berkoff – with a fusion of physical and text-based theatre. Our rich programme of live theatre has continued to fuel, most notably, Robert Icke’s Oedipus and Alexander Zeldin’s The Other Place, both of which inspired our Senior cohort to explore forensic natural- ism in their own work. This feature begins with work staged in the summer of 2024 (too late for a mention in the last Alleynian ) when our current cohort of examinees were flexing their creative muscles and honing their skills as practitioners.

The Mysterious AND The Macabre Year 10 devised drama Devising in drama demands inventiveness, collaboration, risk-taking, an understanding of the rules of structuring a piece of theatre, and a readiness to play. Our GCSE Drama 2025 cohort dazzled with their confidence, bravery and ownership of the Edward Alleyn Theatre (EAT) in their first foray into showcasing their own original work. The four original pieces were fuelled by a variety of stimuli including images, paintings, short-story extracts, video-clips, and musical underscores all under the umbrella theme of The Mysterious and the Macabre , which clearly set their
