WUNDERBAR! German exchange 2025 in Tübingen
T he Tübingen German exchange has been one of the highlights of my time at the College. The adventure began with the German students coming to London for a week in November. A few weeks before, we had been given contact details for our exchange partners and had regularly been in touch. So, we were really looking forward to their arrival and to what fun we could have with them. During their stay, we eight Dulwich boys were able to show our partners what our city had to offer, while discovering a few new things about our wonderful city. It allowed us to appreciate London in a way we hadn’t before — something I found really fulfilling. When the Easter break arrived, it was our turn to visit our partners’ homes. Like the Germans, we stayed for a week, but what an action-packed week it was! Each day, we had new things on the agenda. These included tenpin bowling, a treasure hunt around the old Tübingen city centre, and
even a trip to the Ritter Sport factory, the home of chocolate. Judging by the bulging rucksacks, I think we bought up the whole shop! Of course, this exchange wasn’t just about having fun and touring South Germany and London; it was about developing our understanding of our foreign exchange partners’ language. I can confidently say my German improved following my stay in Tübingen — and my exchange partner, Marlene, assures me her English has also got better. In my experience, immersing yourself in a foreign language is an effective way to improve your ability to speak and understand it, so if you’re lucky enough to be given the opportunity to take part in a foreign exchange, I would say go for it! Not only has it improved my language ability (and hopefully my GCSE grade!) but I’ve also met some fantastic people and learned more about what life is like in Germany. Wunderbar! ◎
