Jane Scott by Katy Jones
Recent years have seen Jane introduce the role of a dedicated filmmaker and photographer and the resulting increase in film content has helped to showcase the College with its talented pupils and staff. The clubs and societies film is one of my favourites; guaranteed to bring a smile. I recommend it to anyone who has not seen it. Coming from a family of educationalists, Jane has always been very committed to the College’s social mission, including broadening access and partnership work. She has been a valued member of the Bursary Committee and the Social Impact Committee. Jane has contributed to the College’s educational work by being an EPQ mentor, guiding pupils researching project topics as diverse as airship design, the American Civil War, the UK preparedness for a pandemic (pre-Covid), and the legacy of colonialisation. Through community action volunteer work at the Dulwich Hamlet, Jane has also supported other local children. As a highly respected member of the College Leadership Team, Jane’s contributions to discussions have been characterised by insight, integrity and compassion. Principled and fair, she is a critical friend and sounding board as well as a very kind and supportive colleague. She will be very much missed. We all thank Jane for her incredible contribution to the College since 2010 and wish her a very happy, interesting and fun-filled retirement with plans that include living overseas and in Scotland, time in her shared studio in Norfolk with her artist husband (Jane is a ceramicist), and her volunteer work with the Samaritans. ◎
waters (for example, the reporting about the College during the Everyone’s Invited campaign in 2021 and when reporting of our overseas interests in China became a story of interest for British journalists). When things have been tricky, Jane has remained calm and clear-sighted. I greatly respect Jane’s PR and media manage- ment skills. A fellow communications professional, Jane Tozer, at media agency Paternoster, commented: “Jane and I began our working relationship during the white-knuckle chaos of the Everyone’s Invited crisis – not a gentle introduction. My contact with clients is forged in crisis and it is a testament to Jane’s calm demeanour and total competence that my stomach never drops when her email drops – the converse: I look forward to whatever we’ll be working on together. Over the years I have come to admire her sharp judgment, unflappable pragmatism and her instinctive grasp of all things comms – especially when reputations are on the line. I hope it’s not too presumptuous to say that beyond the professional, Jane has also become a friend whose wisdom and support I greatly value. I will miss her.” A gifted wordsmith, Jane has authored much of the College’s marketing material, the candidate pack for the recruitment of the Master, and ghost- written the vast majority of editorial pieces from the College, shaping our public voice with flair, intelligence and precision. Jane has brought to the College significant experience of leading premium UK media brands. Her understanding of the importance of brand consistency at every touch point was a forerunner in UK independent schools’ adoption of professional marketing practices and has materially strengthened the College’s reputation since 2010.
Jane started working for the College in 2010 as a consultant and business coach, tasked by the Master with reviewing our marketing, producing a communications plan, launching a new brand identity, and helping develop a new Strategic Plan. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh and spending a year in the German Democratic Republic (former East Germany), Jane’s career started at Andersen Consulting followed by 20 years in mainstream media: The Daily Telegraph; Financial Times as International Director of Marketing and Communications; the BBC as Controller of Strategy and Marketing, and Channel Five as Executive Director of Marketing. She has an MBA from London Business School and while taking time out to raise her family, lectured in International Marketing and Management at King’s College London and launched a chocolate company whose brands were sold by Waitrose and Selfridges.
In 2013 Jane became the College’s first Director of Communications. The College was extraordinarily fortunate to secure someone of Jane’s calibre for the role. Working with her conscientious and enthusiastic team, Jane has transformed the College’s mark- eting and communications, bringing strategy, insight, style and attention to detail that has elevated our public presence across all platforms. One of Jane’s early achievements was an entire organisational rebranding of Dulwich, together with the creation of a contemporary website. Jane has also introduced social media accounts to the College’s digital portfolio and under her skilled leadership, the team works hard to ensure these are vibrant notice boards celebrating the Dulwich community and its values. During her time at Dulwich, Jane has played a key role in relation to the creation, drafting and updating of the College’s Strategic Development Plan, which has involved working very closely with the Master and the Senior Management Team to identify and articulate the College’s strategic vision, objectives and plans. Her skills and experience have been invaluable in this regard. In preparation for the College’s quatercentenary, with its panoply of events during 2019, Jane helped deliver the “Dulwich Olympiad”, which was a tremendous success. Drawing on her experience as a researcher, Jane also established and led on multiple projects, including the first non-joiners survey, brand reputation qualitative research, demographics quantitative research, bursary research and our fee affordability surveys. Jane has a particular ability to identify the salient information from rafts of data. In moments of public scrutiny, Jane has deftly steered the College through challenging media
