Chamber Music The Music Department Chamber Music pro- gramme is a core strand within the Department’s activities. String quartets, septets, percussion ensembles, small jazz ensembles and guitar groups have rehearsed and performed in lunchtime concerts, Scholars’ Concert and at our Spring Chamber Music Concert at All Saints West Dulwich. This was an opportunity for three more of our Year 13 cohort to feature as soloists. Jaden Lam (Year 13) performed the first movement of Mozart’s Violin Concerto in G major, Isaac McConnell (Year 13) performed Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D major and Will Carter (Year 13) was the soloist in David Mancini’s Suite for solo Drumset and Percussion Ensemble. Other highlights of this concert included Mozart’s Oboe Quartet in F where the oboe part was shared between Henry Money (Year 11), Nathan Ikechukwu Daniel (Year 11), and Ryan Nguyen (Year 11) who each alternated between violin and viola when not playing the oboe; Thomas Purvis (Year 13) and Zac Seymour (Year 13) performing Boccherini’s Sonata for Two Cellos in C and Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet featuring Taylor Lai (Year 10) violin, Orfeas Karavas (Year 9) viola, Vivek Kukreja (Year 11) cello and Noah Hemmings (Year 10) double bass with Miss Shanahan playing the piano.
Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy featured Wilf Patten (Year 13) as the sparkling piano soloist with the vocal septet sung by Henry Armstrong (Year 13), Zachary Seymour (Year 13), Inigo Ludford- Thomas (Year11), Nikolas Vrahimis (Year 13), Alessandro Minarik (Year 8), James White (Year 10) and Raymond Zi (Year 7). The Dulwich College Chorus and Madrigal Choir closed the concert with a monumental performance of Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra. Our performers from the Lower and Middle School featured in our Christmas Mince Pie & Mulled Wine Concert with performances by the Concert Band, Other Big Band, Lower and Middle School Percussion Ensemble and the Alan Morgan Orchestra, who also accompanied Jasper Shapton (Year 9) as recorder soloist in Telemann’s Overture in A minor. The Great Hall Concert in the Summer Term was a fabulous end to a year of wonderful music making from the emerging talent in the lower part of the school. Junior Orchestra, Concert Band, Brass Band, Other Big Band, Alan Morgan Orchestra Strings performing “Spring” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with soloists Orfeas Karavas (Year 9), JJ Kwok (Year 9), Lochie Chesney (Year 7), and Sebastian Soegianto (Year 7).
Elliot Coulson (Year 13) played the second move- ment of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no.2 with poetic beauty and understated virtuosity; Henry Rossell’s (Year 13) performance of Horodov’s Gypsy Rhapsody on the clarinet brought to life the rhythmic dance rhythms with a real warmth and beauty of tone; Philip Sparke’s demanding Fantasy for Euphonium showcased Bertie Poullis’s (Year 13) lyricism and virtuosity. The concert also featured the Brass Band, Madrigal Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Band, Symphony Orchestra and Year 7 Concert Choir. Southwark Cathedral was the venue for two of the music calendar’s major performances. Carols by Candlelight at the end of the Michaelmas Term was a beautiful occasion to welcome in the festive season with some stunning performances by the Chapel Choir. In March a full capacity cathedral enjoyed the Spring Choral Concert which shone a spotlight on more of our talented musicians. The demanding horn solo parts in Bach’s first Brandenburg Concerto were expertly played by Henry Armstrong (Year 13), Rory Gurney (Year 13) with Ryan Ngyuen (Year 11), Nathan Ikechukwu Daniel (Year 11) and Henry Money (Year 11) on the oboe obligato parts and Marcus Ng (Year 11) and Jaden Lam (Year 13) on the violin.

We have enjoyed taking our musicians outside College to perform in Pizza Express Live (Holborn), City Heights Academy, the dementia-friendly café in Dulwich, Dulwich Picture Gallery, venues in Liverpool and our latest “residency” at the Crown & Greyhound pub. Large-scale Concerts Musicians in our larger ensembles (Symphonic Wind Band, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Brass Band, Year 7 Concert Choir, Madrigal Choir, College Chorus and Big Band) have graced the stages of Cadogan Hall, Southwark Cathedral and All Saints West Dulwich this year. Our advanced musicians began the academic year with a fabulous Joint Foundation Schools Concert in the third week of term with JAGS and Alleyn’s musicians in a combined orchestral performance of Holst’s The Planets , partnered with Pete Long’s brilliant big band arrangement for the Foundation Schools’ jazz musicians. The musicians all com- bined in a large chorus to sing Cecilia McDowall’s A Fancy of Folksongs. The Winter Concert at Cadogan Hall showcased three of our Year 13 musicians as concerto soloists:
