Contemporary Music An exciting and creative first for the Music Department was the contemporary music concert Revolutions: A Sonic Adventure held in the James Caird Hall, also inaugurating the beautiful new Yamaha Grand Piano (whose purchase was made possible by the support of the Friends of Dulwich College). Featuring music of minimalist and experimental composers Steve Reich, Terry Riley, John Adams, Kevin Volans, Arvo Pärt, Michael Nyman, Pauline Oliveros and a world premiere by composer Thomas Purvis (Year 13), this mind-expanding and hugely compelling performance from different levels and different spaces within the James Caird engulfed the audience. Ms Clíodna Shanahan): Henry Armstrong (Year 13) double bass, voice; Will Carter (Year 13) percussion, trumpet; James Corben (Year 13) bass guitar; Joseph Cranitch (Year 13) concertina; Thomas Purvis (Year 13) cello, keyboard; Henry Rossell (Year 13) clarinet; Kanten Sze (Year 12) percussion, keyboard; Joo Cho (Year 11) clarinet; Henry Money (Year 11) violin, piano; Louis Sinclair (Year 11) violin, piano; Felix Bethell (Year 10) percussion; Orfeas Karavas (Year 9) viola; Christopher Pires (Year 8) clarinet. Projects such as the MOBO trail and performances outside in the various places around the campus during Wellbeing Week have allowed our musicians to share their skills with the whole College. Music in the Community Outside the College gates a quartet of jazz musi- cians Will Carter, Oliver Dittmer, Vincent Liu and George Hannan (all from Year 13) visited City Heights Academy to work with 25 of their Year 9 pupils. The workshop traced the origins of jazz

from its blues and gospel roots to more contempo- rary funk-based grooves with coaching from our boys on improvising and performing skills. A string quartet from Year 11 visited the dementia café in Dulwich Village to play to the guests who use the space and our saxophone quartet provid- ed seasonal music at Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Christmas Fair. Chapel Choir sang Evensong Services at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle as well as at Portsmouth Cathedral. Further afield our Lower and Middle School musicians spent four days on Music Tour in Liverpool. The group of 30 boys performed a concert in a community centre with local musical groups and a lunchtime concert in the Metropolitan Cathedral for 250 primary school pupils. House Music House Music is one of the musical highlights of the Music Calendar. The competitions showcase independent music-making from more than 70 pupils. There was a sense of joy and engagement from every performer as well as an impressively high level of performance and ambition.
