A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
Year 12 students had yet another busy week, as they were once again involved in a plethora of events. Our Year 12 French students supported Year 8 for their French Picnic, giving them yet another chance to converse and use their lanaguage skills. On Wednesday, Year 12 students were invited to attend a workshop supporting them with how to write up their personal statement. It was very well attended and I’m certain they all found it extremely beneficial. Yesterday, the Year 12 History students attended an in-person workshop on the Tudor rebellions. The two-hour workshop was held in an inspiring learning space at The National Archives in Kew. The students handled a range of original Tudor documents from letters to proclamations housed in the State Papers. We also had a talk after school for students thinking of reading a Science-related course at University. The speaker, Ms Leung, is an ex-Waldegrave student and is currently a Bioinformatics PhD Student at UCL Cancer Institute. Ms Leung shared her experiences and offered the chance for our students to ask about studying science at university and where it can take them beyond this. Today, our annual School Sports Day will take place with some disruption to classes. Next week as part of the whole school Drop Down Day the Year 12 students will take part in a year-specific sports day. More details will be shared with the students in due course. We also have a talk for the Year 12 Biology students on Thursday after school with a representative from Imperial College. Finally, on Friday, as part of the A Level in Textiles, the relevant students will take part in a new designers workshop and the A Level Art students, will take part in an Oil Painting Workshop. Details have already been shared with the students via their Google Classrooms.
Have a lovely weekend!
MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12
‘A Room of One’s Own’, by Virginia Woolf This poetically powerful extended essay takes readers on a journey through the history of female writers, as we witness first hand the barriers of structural inequality placed in the path of the female sex. This cornerstone of feminist literature beautifully explores the immense power of personal and feminist interpretation, which cannot be recreated by males with complete literary freedom and space. Woolf’s examination of the patriarchal bookshelves, which leave no room for female narrative voices, ignites a desire to shine a light upon the women who broke the locks placed on literary conventions, finally enabling women to write fiction of their own without interruption. Reading this will transform how you perceive the role of the female voice in literature today. BOOK OF THE MONTH
