The Adjuster’s Advocate

A Look Inside with Managing Attorney Craig Kubiak

O n any given day as Merlin Law Group’s managing attorney, I’m on the front lines, helping solve problems all around the country. I work with our attorneys on claims being investigated by insurance companies as well as claims already filed into suit. I offer advice to our attorneys when they are deciding whether to take on a new case, and I provide input into cases that we appeal. I’m constantly strategizing with our attorneys about their cases. Prior to becoming managing attorney, I was the head of Merlin Law Group’s trial division nationwide. When the court schedules one of our clients’ cases for jury trial, we typically have a conference with all the attorneys working on it. We’re firm believers that when we operate as a team, not as individuals, our clients are much better off! During that conference, we critically look at the case to determine what its strengths and weaknesses are so that when we present the case to the jury, we put our client in the best position to win. In addition to problem-solving and strategizing, I also ensure that our attorneys are compliant and up to speed on all relevant rules and regulations that govern attorneys. With our attorneys operating all over the continental United States and Puerto Rico, we have our work cut out for us. I routinely meet with Mr. Merlin, our COO, and our CFO to talk about the business side of the law firm. We have weekly conversations about Merlin Law Group’s short-term and long-term plans, such as opening new offices in other states and hiring new attorneys and staff. When we’re hiring a new attorney, I may bring in the candidate for a one-on-one interview, or I may schedule a group interview, depending on the circumstances. Our hiring processes help bring in some incredibly talented and knowledgeable individuals, which is absolutely crucial to those who rely on the services we offer.

Exceptional Results

As this newsletter goes to print, I’m in the Florida Keys attending the Florida Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (FAPIA) conference. It’s the largest public insurance adjuster association in the United States. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as FAPIA’s general counsel for the past two-plus years. In the past, I have spoken at multiple FAPIA conferences around the state of Florida, the Windstorm Conference, the First Party Claims Conference, and at the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (NAPIA) events, just to name a few. These conferences have given me the opportunity to renew my friendships with the public adjusters I’ve worked with in the past as well as meet new public adjusters.

We’re firm believers that when we operate as a

team, and not as individuals, our clients are much better off!

As a licensed attorney in Florida, Texas, New Jersey, and New York, my work with public adjusters runs deep. I feel fortunate that I have been able to work with public adjusters across the country over the years who have so many different perspectives and philosophies about adjusting claims, while at the same time sharing my own thoughts and insights so they can achieve exceptional results. –Craig Kubiak
