first opportunity to have real and meaningful responsibility. In no other circumstance is being cold and wet fun but it never seems as bad when you get to fire some blanks, and at 13 years old it is pretty exciting to get your hands on a rifle and to cover your face in cam cream. But since year 9 I have progressed through the ranks at the College and at the end of last summer camp I was made RSM. Since then I have been able to take a leading role particularly the army section, and help the officers and our SSI. As a result, I can now appreciate the great effort taken to organise the CCF and how lucky we are that we have such enthusiastic and committed adults involved. During my time in the cadets I have taken part in the Cadet Cambrian Patrol twice. The Cambrian Patrol is a competition where a section of eight compete against other cadets from all over the UK in a military
skills competition. This tests military knowledge as well as mental and physical toughness as you patrol across the Welsh Hills. I have been lucky enough to be in teams that won both bronze and silver medals and hope that this year, under my leadership, we will be able to win gold. Since its inception in 2015 I have taken part in the Guthrie Cup competition at Harrow school, the cup also tests military skills including fire and manoeuvre with paint ball guns. We won the cup in 2015 and 2017 and came second in 2016.
during my time in the CCF have come from my roles in the various parades and services that the CCF has been part of. This year has been an historic one for DCCCF with our rebadging to the Welsh Guards as well as having our biennial inspection. Being RSM I had to learn, then call the drill for the Affiliation Parade in front of Major General Bathurst. For the school’s Remembrance Parade I had the honour of reading Major Alexander Lafone’s Victoria Cross citation. All of these challenging roles have helped me grow in confidence and improved my public speaking skills which will undoubtedly be useful in later life.
However, I think my biggest challenge and my most useful lessons learnt
