the glass and stir it. Nothing happens! Next we are told that prayer should be unceasing. Some people stop pray ing too soon. We w ill put another white substance [sugar] in the glass, and stir i t Still, nothing happens. There is one more thing mentioned in the recipe. Here is a white powder which we w ill call “ Thanksgiving” [Soda]. We put it in the glass, and the mixture foams. Let us remember that God answers when Christians rejoice in prayer, con tinue in prayer, and give thanks in prayer. LESSON T E X T : Act* 18:1-4; 1 Cor. 13. God’s Word is being fulfilled, that they shall have no certain dwelling place until Mes siah Comes again. Just as surely w ill be fulfilled His promises to them for good. These two Jews with whom Paul liyed were tentmakers—a trade in which Paul also had been instructed. It was the custom among the Jews to teach each child a trade wherewith to make a living. But, like Carey who mended shoes for a livelihood while his chief busi ness was to serve the Lord, Paul was pre-eminently an evangelist. On Sab bath days, he entered the synagogues and there reasoned with the people. He sought to persuade both Jews and Greeks concerning Jesus Christ, the Saviour. The death and resurrection of Christ was the message Paul preached (cf. 1 Cor. 1:17-24; 15:1-4). II. THE SUPREME MANNER (1 C or inth ians 13) After writing of various spiritual gifts and their relative values, Paul declared, in his letter to the Corinthi ans, that there is one Supreme way in which these gifts may be manifested: it is the way of love. A ll spiritual gifts are valueless without love (vs. 1-3). Eloquence, knowledge, faith, charity, martyrdom —all these things that are counted to be of great value among men, are

Acts 18:1 A fter these things Paul depart ed from Athens, and came to Corinth; 2 And found a certain Jew named Aqufla. born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla, (because that Cla idiuS had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome,) and came unto them. 3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: (for by their occupation they were tentmakers.) 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. 1 Corinthians 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowl edge; and though I have all faith, So that I could remove mountains, and have not char ity, I am nothing. 3. And though V bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I Give wy body to be burned, and have not charity, it prof- iteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seek- eth not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, ehdureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fall; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: «but when I became a man, I put away child ish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, dark ly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of thesq is charity. \ B LA C K B O A R D LE SSO N
