21. Available Strength “ I will strengthen thee” (Isa. 41:10). When called to serve or to suffer, we take stock of our strength, and we find it to be less than we thought, and less than we need. But let not our heart sink within us while we have such a word as this to fall back upon, for it guarantees us all that we can possibly need. God has strength omnipotent; that strength He can communicate .to us; and His promise is that He w ill do so. Lord, strengthen me “ according to thy word.”—Charles Haddon Spurgeoy. 22. Branches “I am the vine, ye are the branches”' (John 15:5).' What a simple thing it is to be a branch of the vine! . . . If only, by the Holy Spirit, we knew and realized our union with Christ, our lives and labors would be changed into the brightest and most heavenly thing on earth. In stead of there ever being soul-weari ness or exhaustion, our lives and la bors would be like a new experience, uniting us to Jesus as nothing else can.—W. P. Nicholson. high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:8, 14). What was it that made such a virile Christian of the apostle Paul? What ever kept him so wonderfully vigorous should certainly help us to regain our lost vigor. He tells us that the all- absorbing passion, of his life was to “win Christ.” By winning Christ he meant: (1) art ever-growing apprecia tion of his personal salvation experi ence in Christ, and (2) an ever-in creasing knowledge o f ' Christ in his resurrection, suffering, and death. We shall do well if we folldfr this pattern. •—Assaf Husmann. Christ, All Sufficient “ Be not therefore anxious for the morrow” (Matt. 6:34). Jesus said, “Be not therefore anx ious for the morrow.” Strength and courage for this day and those ahead w ill come from Christ as we are obe dient to His will. Loyalty to the truth always multiplies one’s strength. Let us not be fearful about the future, but face it in faith, knowing that obedi ence brings victory.—Selected. 20. Prayer in the Night “The Spirit also helpeth our infirmi ties: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession" (Rom. 8.26). ] Sometimes I wake with dark and quiet round me, And swift across my vision, like a light, Flashes the face of one I know who suffers, Or one whom sorrow newly touched last night. Perhaps, for just that moment and that purpose, There lacks a link in God’s great chain of prayer; So, lest the chain be weakened by my silence, Or break because I failed to do my share, I shape the link, and know the Spirit’s fire, W ill forge it into place and weld it there.— -Heart to Heart Talk. 19.
