Strengthening Capacity for Excellence in Large-Scale Education Research: IEA’s Workshops

IEA offers a diverse and dynamic portfolio of training programs, designed to equip researchers, policymakers, and technical staff with the skills necessary to engage in every stage of large-scale assessment—ranging from survey design and data collection, to complex data analysis and effective dissemination. THEMATIC AREAS OF EXPERTISE IEA workshops span a comprehensive array of topics essential for modern education research. These include: Sampling and Survey Implementation Participants learn the principles of complex sampling techniques, within-school sampling, weighting, and test administration. Training also covers data capture and verification using specialized tools like IEA’s WinW3S and DME software. Measurement and Psychometrics Advanced workshops introduce participants to Item Response Theory (IRT), structural equation modeling (SEM), and measurement invariance testing for cross-cultural comparisons—ensuring that assessments are not only reliable, but also valid across diverse populations. Data Analysis Techniques From introductory courses in statistical methods and SPSS use, to advanced sessions on multilevel modeling (MLM) and MSEM using Mplus or R, the workshops cater to both early stage and experienced researchers seeking to deepen their analytical skills. Causality Through methodological exploration, participants engage with cutting-edge econometric analysis techniques aimed at exploring (causal) relationships in education systems. The focus is on analysis of ILSA data by means of trend analysis, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, and other advanced techniques. Reporting and Dissemination IEA also provides specialized training in writing academic papers, thematic reports, and policy briefs. These sessions guide participants through the full research-to-publication process and emphasize clear, policy-relevant communication of findings.
