Beyond Barriers: A Guide for Best Practice

Appendix 7: Equipping the Workforce with the Education and Training They Need: The View from the CoSRH

Doctors are undertaking speciality training of which PPC is a key part of this curriculum. By the end of 2025 we will have more than 80 trainees on this programme. The Letter of Competence (LoCs) qualifications provide relevant training to support PPC. The CoSRH offers various LoCs, including those for specific contraceptive methods like subdermal implants (LoC SDI) and intrauterine devices (LoC IUT). These LoCs are awarded after individuals complete the required training and demonstrate competency through knowledge based and practical assessments. Specifically, the LoC Subdermal Implant – Insertion Only is open to healthcare professionals working in maternity and abortion care services. Last year, 98 were awarded this qualification. In 2024 the CoSRH launched a charitable endeavour where the organisation is investing in a ‘two for the price of one’ offer on the LOC SDI-IO qualification to support the maternity and abortion provider workforce in being skilled to deliver PPC.

CoSRH passionately believes that access to PPC is essential to maintaining women’s reproductive health and autonomy in this stage of their reproductive life - whether that be after miscarriage needing a break from fertility, post-birth family spacing or contraception to protect from morbidity: “Post pregnancy contraception is a vital service for women and the need for a trained workforce is paramount. Whilst pregnancy spacing is advised, we know that access to contraception can be difficult. That is why we have created this [‘two for the price of one’ Letter of Competence (LoC) for Subdermal Implant – Insertion Only] initiative, with the aim of pump priming the maternity and abortion care workforce with vital skills to deliver contraception care immediately after birth or termination. By working with employers, we aim to enable the training of the workforce across all professional disciplines, which will improve contraception access and choice to women in the UK, empowering them to plan their pregnancies.” Dr Janet Barter, CoSRH President “By designating our charitable funds to enable training for the maternity and abortion care workforce, we are seeking to improve the quality of contraception services after pregnancy. We very much hope employers will take up the offer of the CoSRH match funding training for their workforce, and if all the available slots are taken, will see over 220 healthcare professionals acquiring new skills to support post pregnancy contraception care.” Gary Waltham, CoSRH Chief Executive The delivery of effective PPC needs engagement from a range of clinicians, across various disciplines who will support women in offering reliable contraceptive advice and facilitating their access to their choice of method. As an organisation, we invest in and offer postgraduate training to support PPC in various formats, at various levels and aim to make it as accessible as possible for our members - including qualifications, courses and Continuing Professional Development. The CoSRH also offer accessible education and training to non- members in the UK and internationally.

Employers of healthcare providers who work in a maternity or abortion care setting get two for the price of one on the application fee and Associate membership option for the CoSRH LoC SDI IO qualification. Claiming the offer is easy; employers can simply purchase a pair of two- for-one discount codes and pay via invoice; then distribute them to staff.

We are pleased to confirm that from summer 2025, we are extending this two for one LoC offer to the non- member route. The CoSRH have also developed a CoSRH Postpartum Contraception Course to improve awareness of this important topic for Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialty registrar. So far,

we’ve had around 100 delegates attend this course and we will be offering further courses in 2025.
