4.4 Your Future Destination

The job search process will not look the same for everyone. Each person will approach the job search at a different pace and with different priorities, so it is important not to compare yourself to others. Remember that it’s important to be very reflective during the job search process to make sure that both the job and the employer are a good fit, not only for your skills and knowledge, but also based on your career goals and the workplace values discussed in Step 3. Once you get that job offer, what do you do next? • First, even if you know you want to accept the position, always ask for some time to think about it. Take at least a day or two to really think about the offer, evaluate fit, and talk with folks you trust. • Next, use resources like Glassdoor and the Occupational Outlook Handbook to research what a typical salary range for the position is based on location, and use this information to aid you in the salary negotiation process. For some great tips on salary negotiation, check out this Candid Careers Video. • Before accepting, make sure you have answers to any outstanding questions that may influence your decision. It’s also important to know that you don’t have to accept the first job offer you get. If you are unsure about the offer or the position, make sure to talk with someone about your hesitations.
