NEXT AVENUE - SPECIAL SECTION

Fast-Forward & Next Avenue Take Control of the Rest of Your Life

In the PBS documentary film Fast-Forward , premiering on TPT 2 on Wednesday, March 24 at 9 p.m. , we observe the challenges — and the revelations — experienced by four ordinary families. Each family pairs a parent age 50+ and their grown child who spend an entire week together in an “aging bootcamp.” The parent-child duos undergo tests and doctor visits, are immersed in communities of 80-somethings and have meaningful conversations about their family’s future health trajectory, caregiving and living arrangements. To say it’s a revelation is an understatement.

Fast-Forward is more than a film. It’s also a catalyst for action. Next Avenue — a website produced by Twin Cities PBS (TPT) — has produced online resources to help viewers prepare for their own futures. After viewing Fast- Forward , people might feel stuck, nervous and overwhelmed by everything they’ve learned and witnessed. That’s why Next Avenue has created a toolkit of lessons and guides to help, step-by-step, with the most essential planning. Tasks like completing an advance directive are incredibly important for adults of any age — not just older people.

Aging is not an easy topic, and taking care of yourself (or a parent) is a big job. But you can make it easier if you plan ahead with intention.

On the following four pages, learn more about the film Fast-Forward and how to utilize the complementary resources fromNext Avenue.

Major support for this program was provided by The John A. Hartford Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Fast-Forward is a Production of FLX Entertainment in Association with Twin Cities Public Television.
