ACCOMMODATION FOR PATIENTS AND CARERS Marillac House

Who’s it for? Marillac House, operating as a Special Work of the Society in Launceston and Hobart, provides short-term accommodation for Tasmanians and visitors who need a safe and supportive place to stay while they or their loved ones receive medical treatment. This simple but comfortable and welcoming accommodation is especially valuable for people travelling from remote and regional areas, offering a home-like environment where guests can rest, recover and connect with others in similar circumstances. How We Help This year 1,646 guests stayed at Marillac House in Launceston, with 759 referrals received from hospitals, doctors, and allied health providers across the state. Of those referrals, 44% were from King and Flinders Islands, reflecting the significant role Marillac House plays for island and rural communities. Marillac House in Hobart welcomed 625 guests over the course of the year, with a lower proportionate rate of occupancy when compared to our Launceston service. Our understanding is that many of those requiring travel for medical purposes are able to be affordably accommodated with assistance from other service providers. While we know that our Hobart service has been highly valued by those guests who have been received with warmth and supported in their circumstances since it opened in late 2023, this southern-based accommodation will be reviewed in the new financial year.

The service in Launceston is supported by three staff and three dedicated volunteers, while our Hobart team comprises two staff and two volunteers. Every member of our Marillac House team receives guests with compassionate care, offering comfort and support throughout their stay. Average stays across both sites vary widely—from a single night for those attending appointments, to extended stays of several weeks for guests undergoing more complex treatments. Regardless of the length, each stay offers stability and care during a challenging time. Key Statistics • 2,269 guests accommodated through the service statewide • 5 staff and 5 volunteers across Launceston and Hobart services • Guests travelled from across Tasmania, including the Bass Strait Islands, and also from interstate
