Amelie House ACCOMMODATION AND SUPPORT FOR WOMEN

Who’s it for? Amelie House provides transitional housing and support for women in Hobart who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness. It offers a safe, welcoming environment where residents can stabilise their lives and work towards independent and secure, long-term housing. How We Help Since opening its doors on 20 January 2025, Amelie House has supported 79 residents in its first six months of operations, with many then successfully moving into independent housing. While the program is delivered by the St Vincent de Paul Society, it works collaboratively as part of the wider ecosystem of housing and support agencies, drawing upon strong relationships with a range of other services, combining expertise in housing, case management and wraparound support. The site in central Hobart is owned by the Society as was previously the location of Bethlehem House for over fifty years. Receiving operating funds from Homes Tasmania when the State Government’s budget was announced in September 2024, the Society is pleased to offer this as a ‘meanwhile use’ service for a three-year period until the various buildings are redeveloped. Immediately after operating funds were assured, refurbishment of the site began and this was made possible through partnerships with the Select Foundation, Housing All Australians, Dulux, MONA and corporate supporters such as Somerset on the Pier, who donated a significant quantity of high-level furniture to fully fit-out the facility.

In its current form, Amelie House provides up to 43 bedrooms along with shared kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces. Residents benefit from a ‘light-touch’ transitional housing model, with social worker activity supplemented by specialist wraparound expertise delivered by partners including the Hobart Women’s Shelter, Hobart City Mission, CatholicCare, the Salvation Army and also Anglicare’s Housing Connect Frontdoor. Amelie House is helping to fill gaps during the current housing crisis, delivering much-needed support to single women experiencing homelessness through a skilled team that is supported by dedicated volunteers, ensuring residents have access to the practical and emotional support they need. Key Statistics • 79 residents supported since opening in Jan 2025 • 43 bedrooms available at the former Bethlehem House site
