FEATURE UNDERSTANDING RETROFIT
A retrofit project by Property Revolutions Limited in Cambridge
ARE YOU RETROFIT READY?
Y ou’ve heard the word so conscious to ask: what is retrofit? If you read the last edition of Master Builder , FMB Scotland Director Gordon Nelson offered a concise definition after visiting Edinburgh’s Green Home Festival: “Not to be confused with renovations or refurbishments, retrofit focuses specifically on increasing an existing building’s energy efficiency by introducing new materials, products and technologies.” So you know what it means, but perhaps you don’t think you’re able to deliver that type of work. The good news, according to Carl Dodd, Owner of Property Revolutions frequently by now, and maybe you’re not sure what it means, so you end up feeling a little too self-
Retrofit it a weighty word that can sometimes confuse builders, but many in the repair, maintain and improve (RMI) sector are capable of delivering this type of work – with a little bit of training
Limited in Cambridge, is that you probably are, but you may need some help. “Most builders involved in RMI would be capable of delivering retrofit works with a small amount of upskilling and maybe some on-site instruction for the first one or two projects to become more familiar with terminology and also the sign-off processes,” Dodd explains. Graham Wicks, Owner and CEO of ExtendOut Design & Build in West Molesey, Surrey, agrees. He says: “Those in the RMI sector should already have knowledge of fitting insulation, the different thicknesses and materials available, how important ventilation is throughout a property, and heating systems through their day-to-day building work.
