A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

Year 8 have had a fantastic Drop Down Day this week which was focused on African Arts. The students took part in many different activities such as: Nigerian Drumming, Afrobeats Dance Fusion, Griots - African Storytelling, African Fabric Prints, African Jewellery Making and finally they took part in an African Team Quiz. I was so impressed by their attitude and behaviour on the day and I do encourage you to speak to your child at home and ask them to talk about what they found interesting or insightful about the day. Our top three forms for epraise this week are: 8EFR in first place, followed by 8EMU and in third is 8SGZ. Well done to the following students who are currently top of the individual leaderboard for Year 8: in first place is Freya W in 8EFR, second Charlie M in 8EMU and third place is Dakshina A-P in 8PWA. Keep up the good work! As we approach our final week of this half term, I would like to remind students of the expectations around uniform and behaviour. Our uniform policy can be found here. We want to end this half term positively and so we would ask for your support in checking in with your child about how they feel this term has gone and if there is anything they would like to work on moving forward.

Significant Black Figure of the Week

Meet Trailblazer Candice Carty-Williams

She became the first black author to win book of the year at the British Book Awards.

Before writing her first novel she worked in publishing where she noticed how few people of colour there were writing and publishing books. So she took action and created the Guardian and 4th Estate BAME Short Story Prize, to improve the diversity of the publishing world “I am proud yes but I’m also sad and confused that I’m the first black AND female author to have won this award since it began,” she continued. “Overall, this win makes me hopeful that although I’m the first, the industry are waking up to the fact that I shouldn’t and won’t be the last.”
