The program starts with fundamental power generation concepts and concludes with a broad overview of the systems and components that form a complete generator, with special emphasis placed on emergency power supply systems. The course starts from the front of the generator and moves systematically through each system until we reach the alternator end. Professionals in sales, marketing, management, applications engineering, engine service, and administration have found this course invaluable for building confidence and technical fluency. EGSA’s Onsite Power Generation School (Advanced) The Advanced School is tailored for professionals who already have a solid foundation in generator system fundamentals. This program builds on that knowledge, focusing on specialized topics dealing with the theory, design, manufacturing, and operation of alternators, automatic voltage regulators, speed and load controls, generator system protection, automatic transfer switches, switchgear, noise control technology, engine emissions, and system communications. Instruction begins with the alternator (“gen-end”) and culminates in the process of sizing a generator for real-world applications. This course is especially valuable for specifying engineers, project managers, service professionals, and business owners who want to sharpen their technical expertise and expand their practical skillset.

Maintenance Professionals and Service Technicians Education Track EGSA created the Generator Maintenance Services program outlined below to address the growing need for a hands-on technical training curriculum. Each level focuses on critical skills needed to perform basic maintenance tasks in accordance with NFPA 110. And while this course is designed specifically to help technicians enhance their maintenance abilities, trend analysis, and troubleshooting skills, it is also an excellent course for end users, sales and account managers, and supervisors, who want to better understand best practices for maintenance and documentation.

Generator Maintenance Services, Level I Generator Maintenance, Level I focuses on entry level theory, safety, and minor and major maintenance procedures. It includes electrical fundamentals, generator theory, basic introduction to NFPA 110 focusing on major and minor primary maintenance (PM) procedures, basic troubleshooting of the electrical starting system, trend analysis, and documentation (using PM check sheets and logs). Generator Maintenance Services, Level II Generator Maintenance Services, Level II builds on the foundation established in Level I, moving from introductory service tasks to more advanced troubleshooting and system theory. This hands-on program strengthens technical skills through procedures such as coolant system maintenance, block heater replacement, and relay testing. Students will also be introduced to load bank theory and operation while gaining a deeper understanding of critical systems including automatic voltage regulators (AVRs), governors, alternators, controls, and automatic transfer switches (ATS).
Learning Objectives Upon completing this course, students will be able to: l Replace belts and hoses in the coolant system. l Perform a complete coolant flush. l Troubleshoot block heaters. l Explain replacement procedures for block heaters.
l Test relays and basic control circuits to verify functionality. l Describe the purpose and procedures of load bank operation. l Explain the role of AVRs, governors, alternators, and the ATS in generator system performance.

EGSA Technician Certifications
EGSA Generator Technician Certification Assessments As part of its commitment to advancing professionalism within the onsite power industry, EGSA offers the Electrical Generator Systems Technician Certification Assessment. This rigorous assessment identifies technicians who possess comprehensive knowledge of electrical systems, mechanical and electrical components, and their interactions, as well as the processes and procedures required for the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of onsite power generation systems. EGSA’s Technician Certification is available at two levels: l Apprentice Certification – Designed for technical college students, recent graduates, military personnel, and first- or second-year technicians, this exam covers 40+ areas of expertise and validates that fundamental knowledge of onsite power systems have been achieved. Certification is valid for three years. l Journeyman Certification – Intended for technicians with at least three years of practical field experience, this exam covers 61 individual areas of expertise, assuring employers that the technician meets or exceeds industry knowledge standards. Certification is valid for five years.

The EGSA study guides are practice booklets that are mailed directly to you. These study guides are a great option for technicians who have experience but just want to know what to expect on test day. The booklets include all the knowledge areas included in each assessment and practice questions to help candidates gauge their readiness. Study guide booklets can be ordered directly through EGSA’s website: egsa.org .

EGSA Certification Bootcamp: This instructor-guided review program is offered both in-person and in live online formats. The certification bootcamps have the highest success rate of all EGSA preparatory offerings, and it includes a review of all main test topics to ensure that technicians are fully prepared for the Apprentice and Journeyman Certification exams. The bootcamp is offered as one 4-hour review, plus proctoring the exam (totaling 6-8 hours). Bootcamps can include both apprentice and journeyman candidates simultaneously. There are no prerequisites for EGSA’s Certification Bootcamp but completing the study guide and purchasing EGSA’s Onsite Power Generation reference book in advance of the bootcamp are highly recommended. EGSA Load Bank Certification for Technicians The EGSA Load Bank Certification is a 3-day intensive skills assessment course designed for technicians who want to advance their skills in generator load testing. Combining classroom instruction with hands-on lab experience, this program equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely and effectively perform load bank operations. Participants will learn to apply proper safety protocols , interpret generator nameplate ratings , understand and execute different types of load tests , and gather, calculate, and document load test results in compliance with local authority requirements (AHJ). The course also addresses environmental considerations, site conditions, and troubleshooting potential problems during testing. By the end of the program, successful technicians will be prepared to conduct accurate load tests, ensure compliance with safety and operational standards, and demonstrate advanced expertise in generator performance testing. Course Description: The EGSA Load Bank Certification is an intensive 3-day course designed for experienced technicians who aim to enhance their knowledge and abilities in load bank operations, safety, setup, and testing procedures. The curriculum combines classroom and hands-on training sessions. The course layout includes dedicated time for classroom instruction and lab work on Day 1, followed by more classroom/lab work and a practical assessment on Day 2, and concludes with a final practical assessment and the EGSA Load Bank Certification test on Day 3.

Engineering Education Track In recent years, EGSA has offered engineering specific education at its conferences. These engineering symposiums are designed to provide specific engineering industry training on onsite power technologies associated with emergency power systems applications. EGSA offers personal development hours (PDHs) for these symposiums to help engineers meet their licensing requirements. With the success of the engineering symposiums, EGSA is going to be offering a new engineering school to bring all of its engineering resources together into one core program. Course Description EGSA’s core engineering curriculum is designed to provide specifying engineers with the knowledge they need to accurately and correctly develop designs for onsite power generation applications. Students will go through a number of learning modules that enhance their knowledge of the basic principles of generator operation, distribution switch gear, and design considerations like paralleling generator sets, data center applications, and more. In addition to theory and application, students will also learn about the codes and standards that apply, including NFPA, NEC, and EPA regulations. Beyond theory, design, and compliance, the course gives students access to engineers with real-world experience, who can address emerging industry challenges, upcoming code changes, and new technologies that will impact the onsite power generation industry. Students will leave with both enhanced technical expertise and compliance awareness needed to excel in today’s evolving power generation landscape. Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will... l Understand basic onsite power generation applications and technologies. l Identify and explain basic load types, factors affecting generator response, and how to optimize sizing based on site conditions and specialized loads. l Interpret and apply NFPA 70, NFPA 99, NFPA 101, NFPA 110, and EPA standards to ensure compliant design, installation, and operation of onsite power generation systems. l Describe ATS functions, configurations, transition types, and bypass-isolation features, while referencing UL 1008 and NFPA standards. l Plan and assess systems for environments such as data centers and microgrids, including terminology, certifications, redundancy, and reliability considerations. l Perform cost analysis and ROI calculations, evaluate the economic impact of reliability, and assess the feasibility of microgrid applications for resiliency and sustainability.
EPSS Overview, Equipment, and Technology What is Onsite Power Generation?
The onsite power industry includes a wide range or technologies and specially designed equipment to provide localized power generation. This includes stationary primary power where utilities are not available, larger applications designed to supplement or backup utilities like microgrids, emergency power supply system applications, and peak shaving. In this module, students will learn about the technologies utilized to make onsite power generation possible, the codes and standards that regulate these applications, and design considerations that apply to specifying engineers.

ATS Basics and Design Considerations This engineering module reviews transfer switch basics (terminology and theory of operation) , design, controls, and specifier considerations to include sizing, withstand and close-on ratings, enclosure types, and maintenance services. Bonding and Ground of the EPSS This engineering module provides the student with a foundational understanding of bonding and grounding, to include NEC definitions, grounding theory, overviews of ground faults, and the difference between separately derived and not-separate derived systems. Introduction to Generator Set Sizing Generators have several factors that need to be considered when appropriately sizing for a project, other than the summation of kW. In this engineering module, the student will learn how various parameters of an application (such as ambient conditions, load details, stepping, code requirements, etc.) must all be considered when optimally sizing a generator set. Data Centers are growing and evolving at a rapid pace. Designing power generation for data center needs has some unique application considerations. This engineering module will break down common industry terminology, identify component designs, explain the difference between Tier 4 certified, Tier 4 compliant, and Tier IV data center, and describe key factors impacting high density generator yards. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Battery energy storage systems are one major part of onsite power generation landscape. In this engineering module, students learn BESS basics, different types of energy storage technologies, the difference between BESS and generators, as well as how hybrid systems combine BESS and diesel generators. In addition, you will learn about industry trends related to battery energy storage, specifically as it relates to hybrid genset applications. Paralleling Basics and Considerations for Hybrid Technology and Microgrids Paralleling power generation systems is a design consideration that has been around for a long time, but in recent years it has become increasingly important to understand what paralleling does, how it is accomplished, and why it is important for hybrid technologies and microgrids applications. In this engineering module, the student will learn about paralleling terminology, theory, and controls that make these system designs reliable, scalable, and resilient. In addition, they will learn how paralleling technology fits into hybrid and microgrid design considerations. Economics of Generators and Standby Power Systems This engineering module provides an introduction to feasibility studies for Microgrid applications. Students will learn to assess a wide range of design options that integrate various dispatchable and renewable energy sources, such as synchronous generators, energy storage systems, solar, and fuel cells. Students will learn how to optimize energy assets to meet economic and sustainability goals through detailed load profile analysis and site-specific data. By the end of this course, participants will be able to understand feasibility assessments that drive decisions for low-cost and low-emission microgrid solutions.
