Who We Are
Bernie Moore; Founder of Bernie Moore Ministries
Bernie burns with a deep passion for the lost and desires to do whatever it takes to fulfill the Great Commission by preaching the Gospel to the ends of the earth! As a young man, Bernie trained under the legendary Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke. Evangelist Bonnke was a true spiritual father to Bernie, and launched Bernie to start his global, evangelistic ministry: Bernie Moore Ministries International. Bernie Moore Ministries International was birthed 15 years ago through countless nights of prayer and several genuine Holy Spirit encounters. In order to fulfill the calling on his life, Bernie has gone where very few desire to go and where few dare to go. The sentence is mostly clear, but it could be improved for clarity and flow. To date, Bernie’s ministry has led well over 2,000,000 people to come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior. Thousands have received miraculous healings, hundreds of new churches have been planted abroad, and existing churches have tripled or quadrupled in size following BMM’s Jesus Festivals.
Nicole Moore; Co-Founder of Bernie Moore Ministries
Nicole Moore is a dedicated wife, mom, and passionate advocate for family ministry. In addition to her ministry work, she is a licensed aesthetician who loves enhancing women’s natural beauty, particularly through bridal makeup. Nicole met her husband, Bernie, when they were just 15, and her influence played a significant role in his decision to pursue ministry. Their shared journey has been a cornerstone of their family and faith, further fueling their commitment to building a lasting kingdom legacy together.

Driven By Prayer
Volume 001, Issue 001 October 2024
INTRODUCTION TO BERNIE’S “DRIVEN BY PRAYER”
the stillness of the early morning. I sometimes begin quietly in my mind or softly aloud, thanking God for the many blessings He's bestowed on me. Even in moments of trials, there are always things to be thankful for; I don't have to look very far. The seconds quickly turn into minutes; these days, those minutes are hours, but it all started with deciding to swing my legs out of bed and get up. With the daily battles and struggles we all face, some even seeming herculean, I believe the first action of every day must, without question, be prayer! It is the most important action of our entire day. We must be Driven By Prayer! Prayer instantly places us in God’s holy presence and sets us up to handle any challenges that may come our way. For me, this has become a non-negotiable. I have to spend time with Jesus! My heart yearns for Him. Several years after starting Bernie Moore Ministries International, our global evangelism ministry, I found myself in an extended prayer time one morning. We'd been conducting our global Jesus Festivals for several years when I realized that we saw people come to Jesus for an average ministry cost of one dollar,
sometimes even less, per soul. Of course, this was shocking, in a good way! My sincere goal was always to make every dollar stretch as far as possible to reach more people. So, when I realized that for every dollar a donor gave, a soul was being saved, I paused with great excitement. Unfortunately, that excitement didn’t last long. The joy quickly turned into a holy frustration. I began to think to myself, "This is just simple math. Based on these numbers, if we had one million dollars, we could win one million souls for the Lord." Again, I paused, thinking, how could I only now be realizing this? Honestly, that particular morning while in prayer, my disappointment grew. This greatly perturbed me. I cried out in prayer, saying, "Lord, please give us one million dollars, and we will reach and win one million souls. Every penny would go toward our Jesus Festivals all over Africa, Asia, and the rest of the world!" As moments passed, I became more passionate about my pleas to the Lord, continuing to ask, begging Him to send us the funds so that we could turn them into one million lost, hurting, and broken souls won to Jesus. After several minutes of lingering in prayer over this, I finally quieted down. (My wife
Is it worth it? I’m not sure, to be honest.” I slowly open my eyes, only to realize it's still dark. It's cold, I'm exhausted, and I don't want to get out of bed. As the minutes tick on, I continue negotiating in my head, trying hard to devise every excuse I possibly can, telling myself I could use one more hour of sleep. Life is coming at me with fury: finances, family, marriage, friends, ministry, travel, health, and more. I can't catch a break. It seems like everyone needs something from me, and yet, who can I turn to for comfort? Then, a soft, gentle voice whispers a familiar Scripture: "The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak." Knowing what I have to do, I talk myself out of bed. First, coffee! Next, my home office, where I sit in

was not his own. He fully belonged to God. What John possessed couldn't be bought with money or achieved by artificial, earthly means. John had a deep, pure, genuine, and holy relationship with his Heavenly Father. That relationship was only attained through a life Driven By Prayer! My heart for this book is that you would become so passionate about prayer that it would drive your every waking moment and that you would realize communing with the Father is what we were all created to do. He longs to speak with you and for you to long for Him, too! Through this divine Spirit, you’ll realize prayer propels us forward and gives life to every dream we have. As oxygen gives life to our lungs and blood gives life to the body, prayer gives life to our spirit and connects us right to the heart of the Father. May the words written on the pages of this book greatly impact you and challenge you to live a life Driven By Prayer.
than anything else. Again, "Lord, teach us to pray!" They began to learn the vital importance of being Driven By Prayer. Charles Spurgeon wrote, "Groanings that cannot be uttered are often prayers that cannot be refused." May we all be driven by a spirit of prayer! What did Jesus say about John the Baptist? As a man who lived a life devoted to prayer, alone in the wilderness, he passionately and unapologetically pursued God with his entire being. He was clothed in camel's hair, girded with a leather belt (not Gucci), and he didn’t really give two hoots about whether anyone liked him or approved of his life. He regularly ate a diet of locusts and wild honey. And yet, Jesus said of this man, “There has been none born of women greater than John the Baptist.” Even Herod, a heathen king who feared no one, actually feared John the Baptist. Mark writes in chapter 6, verse 20, "Herod feared John, for he knew he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. Herod enjoyed listening to John." It's easy to see that Herod knew there was something very unique about John; he had something that Herod wanted. Despite the king having accumulated worldly wealth, great influence, and numerous accolades, nothing seemed to satisfy him. Although John didn’t possess the worldly achievements that Herod had, Herod knew and truly recognized that what John possessed was far greater than all he had attained. John's life
would say that's the first miracle.) I must admit, I became emotional. Tears streamed down my face. As I sat in silence, still thinking we needed a million dollars to reach a million souls, the Lord softly replied in the stillness of the moment and said, "Bernie, you don't have a million-dollar prayer life!" It was there in that very moment that I realized my life was not Driven By Prayer! I remember what the Lord spoke to me years ago when He said, "Bernie, if you want to go where you've never gone so that you can see what you've never seen and do what you've never done, then you must be willing to pay a price you've never paid!” Jesus modeled a faithful life of prayer for us. The disciples could’ve asked Him many questions, such as, "Could you please teach us how to sustain this great ministry You've started?" or maybe, "Teach us how to grow our partner base so we can raise more support to bring this glorious Gospel around the world,” or, "Can you please teach us how to preach effectively like You do,” or even, “Teach us how to disciple others and handle religious and community leaders." I'm sure these questions would've all been good and well-intended. Surely, we would've understood why they’d asked these things, but none of these questions left their lips. The only question that truly plagued them was, "Lord, teach us to pray!" They saw their Lord and Savior model prayer so well that they wanted His prayer life more

VENDA REJOICES! AN INTERVIEW WITH PASTOR PJ OF VENDA, SOUTH AFRICA BY BERNIE MOORE
“THE LAST TIME A JESUS FESTIVAL WAS BROUGHT HERE WAS 1984.”
Audrey Bruce, South Africa, 2024
After he left, the Christian community here boomed, with churches multiplying and thriving. I believe his work set a powerful example for many churches across South Africa. PJ: His impact was significant. Bonnke’s crusade not only blessed the people here but also sparked a rapid growth in Christianity in the area. Bernie: It sounds like it was a transformative time. How did his visit impact the local churches and the Christian community? PJ: Absolutely. When Evangelist Bonnke came here, it wasn’t his first crusade in South Africa. He had conducted other crusades in the region before this one. But when he arrived in this stadium, it was a remarkable event. There was a profound sense of excitement and anticipation. Bonnke’s visit brought an outpouring of prayer, blessings, and numerous miracles. For many of us, it was the first time witnessing such extraordinary miracles. Bernie: That’s incredible. It seems that his influence extended well beyond the crusade itself. PJ: Exactly. The crusades of Evangelist Bonnke played a crucial role in the growth of Christianity, especially during the revivals that started in 1984. It's been 40 years since then, and the impact is still felt today. Bernie: You mentioned the big tent used during the crusade. Can you tell us more about that? PJ: Yes, the big tent was a significant innovation for us. It was introduced in the city, Springs, and then set up here in Barraguan. The tent was a new and exciting element of the crusades, making it possible to accommodate even larger crowds and reach more people. Bernie: What do you think Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke’s legacy means for Africa? PJ: Bonnke’s legacy is immense. He was the first white man from Germany to unify the entire continent of Africa. At the time, South Africa was deeply divided by apartheid, with significant racial segregation even within the Christian community. Bonnke's arrival marked a turning point. His work fostered unity between black and white churches, particularly focusing on areas that were under served. As a result, churches grew rapidly, transcending previous barriers. Bernie: We’re here with PJ, a dear friend who worked alongside Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke during his original crusade in this very stadium back in 1984. PJ, you spent four years with Bonnke, spreading the gospel across Venda. Can you share your experiences with us? Bernie: That’s a powerful legacy. How did Bonnke's vision shape the future of Christianity in Africa? PJ: Bonnke had a vision of a blood-washed Africa, from Cairo to Cape Town. His impact was profound; he opened doors for communication between pastors, encouraged international visitors, and
IT WAS A TIME OF GREAT SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND UNITY, IT’S A CHAPTER OF MY LIFE I WILL ALWAYS CHERISH. redefined how Christianity could be practiced and shared across the continent. His presence was transformative, and without his influence, the journey of Christianity in Africa might have been very different. Bernie: Do you have any personal reflections on your time working with him? Bernie: Amen, yes, amen. Thank you, Pastor PJ. Thank you very much. God bless you. And you’re going to be here at the Jesus Festival tonight? PJ: Yes, I’ll be here tonight. Looking forward to it! PJ: Yes, I deeply miss him. I remember he once said he wanted to finish his final crusade with us. I had the honor of being part of his team as a worship leader. It was a time of great spiritual growth and unity, and it’s a chapter of my life I will always cherish. I also remember working with many great men of faith, that were with us during that pivotal time.

WORRY IS A SIN

Worry is a SIN!
Wow, that is a sobering thought! Let's be honest, we ALL struggle with worry from time to time. As a “work in progress” control-freak I am the first to raise my hand and say that I have struggled and still do with worry and anxious thoughts. It often is related to my kids, my future, their future, financial pressures and honestly things that are completely out of my control. However, scripture is crystal clear when it comes to us worrying.
May I kindly remind you what the Lord says about you. In Psalm 139:13-18 - “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.” Did you catch that? This is how the Lord truly feels about you. The Psalmist says, “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;” With that in mind, don’t you think that the Lord truly cares about the things that you care about? Things or issues that have seemed to plague you mentally and emotionally. This is exactly why Jesus commands us in Matthew 6:25 NOT TO WORRY! Psalms 37:4-5 - “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness, Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.”
Matthew 6:25 -
The reality is that Jesus is absolutely in control of everything. When we take things up on our own or worry our way through a situation we are essentially saying, “Lord, we don’t fully trust that You will actually handle this particular situation that we are worrying about.” Yikes! Can you imagine one of your children saying, “Mom, Dad, I know you love me but I’m having doubts that you will take care of me and that you actually have my best interest in mind.” I can promise you, as a parent that would break my heart. Well believe me, when you worry, when anxiousness tries to camp out in your mind, this without question breaks the Lord's heart. After all He is the ONE that has ever so intricately and delicately created you - in His image - and mapped out your destiny! “Therefore I say to you, ‘do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on…’ which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”
13
These are some practical yet biblical ways to combat worry and anxiety: Focus on God’s Promises Meditate day and night on His promises found in scripture. Take inventory of everything that He has done for you in times past. Allow His holy word to strengthen your faith and give you reassurance. 1. Now I am fully aware that this is so much easier said than done because at the end of the day we are human and have real emotions and feelings. As a Christ follower we have supernatural power. The HOLY SPIRIT! We must tap into that power each and every day. We must submit our will and emotions to Him. It’s miraculous what happens when we lay everything down at His feet.
Matthew 6:33 - “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” As believers our job is to trust and obey Him. He knows the beginning to the end. For me, that brings me so much peace knowing that He is TRULY in control of every aspect of my life as long as I allow Him. What a liberating feeling!
2.
Talk to Jesus Tell Him what you need and thank Him for all that He has done. Gratitude helps shift your focus away from worry and redirects it towards recognizing God’ s faithfulness and goodness. It truly cancels out worry, fear and anxiety. These emotions can’t coexist together. 1 Peter 5:7 - Cast your cares upon Him, for He cares for you. Seek Godly Counsel It is amazing what happens when you can process your worry and anxiety with other believers. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh, Godly perspective to transform your mindset.
3.
Proverbs 11:14 - Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.
The Bible is the greatest road map for all believers. There are a plethora of scriptures that combat worry. I encourage you to please read the Word, meditate on it, pray to Jesus, and seek counsel from the greatest Counselor, The Holy Spirit. He loves you and has amazing plans for you! I will leave you with my favorite scripture of all time.

The Tenderness of Jesus in Grief
A Essay from Audrey Bruce
Over and over I saw an image in my head: I was dancing with Him in a garden, so close together, so much trust and peace. He looked right into my eyes, and I looked into His. From behind me, a sly hand sneaks through the bushes and a dagger flies through my back into my heart. Shocked, my eyes meet His again. His eyes are full of tears, so are mine. He braces, and I feel it. Betrayal. He could see. HE COULD SEE! From right behind me, all this time, He could see! We fall together to the floor, me in His arms, tears fall from His eyes, no words. I am so angry, and so sad. Why didn’t He protect me? Despite it all, I opened the conversation. “Whenever you have something to say, no matter how long it takes, I will listen.” I avoided statements that would have tempted my immaturity so easily before, like, “If you don’t say something in the next 5 minutes I’ll know you’re not real.” I sidestepped the deep desire to be angry forever as a memorial, and I meant what I said, that I would listen. Weeks passed, and to be very honest I did not seek an answer. I went on with my days, some angry, some sad, some okay. June 25th, I am standing for worship in Upper Room and they open with a song that joins with heaven, “Holy holy holy, Lord God Almighty.” This song does not make me squirm how some of the others do. I agree with this one; despite all my feelings, He is Holy at the very end. Communion is prompted to us all, and I hold the small plastic cup in my hand. I’ve always desired to understand the power of communion and Jesus’ sacrifice for me, so much depth to be discovered and love and power to be felt
It’s quite inevitable, in grief, to look for a reason. To search for someone to blame. Human nature claws for survival, for purpose, for reason. In March, I was confronted with the terrible question of, “Why?” It gnashed within me. Disbelief and reality arm- wrestled. And as much as I wondered why this terrible thing had happened to me, I wondered more how God could have possibly had a reason to allow such a terrible dagger to find its way into my heart. Something so unforeseeable to me, He surely knew this from the beginning? The moment I was born, some heavenly clock counted down from 23 years to 0 seconds on earth with a father. That is my life story now. This has happened to me. This has happened to me, and it always will have happened to me. There is no saving from this, no relief from the pain, no undoing and retyping, no waking up. Anger sizzled deep in my heart; had been sizzling. An inevitability. In Florida I said to Jesus, “I want to be your friend. I do not want to live a life without you, and although I am angry and do not understand, I want you to know I will listen for you.” I felt as though I needed to open a conversation, to state that my heart was open to reason, to friendship, even though I felt it might take a very long time to build trust again. My heart was so sour, so many bitter thoughts swirled through me as to the nature of my friend Jesus, and His great elaborate trick. I felt through my trusting Him for so long I had been set up as the punchline of His joke.

A Friendship with Jesus through Grief
A Essay From Audrey Bruce
The same way that Jesus died for me, to protect me from an eternity without my father. He protected me from an eternity where death is final and separation is destiny. He conquered the conclusion of death. Death still comes, and we will all find ourselves face to face with the end. Jesus died so that when we are there, at our very end, there comes a light, a warmth, and a reunion. I found myself face to face with Jesus, who could handle my anger, who protected me, who died for me, who is a good Man, a good Friend, and a very good Father. My dad sings, “Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.” Tears fill his eyes and his heart swells. They sing of a reunion and honor the Man who bought it.
behind it. The power of the blood that was spilt for our sin. The blood that was spilt because He loves us, to save us. To save us from what, though? From sadness? No. From anger? No. From tragedy? No. We will be spared none of this. The power of the blood saves us from separation. I was always so confused by “Jesus wept.” Moved, yes, very deeply…but still confused. How could He grieve when He knew the conclusion? He wept because He felt grief. As much as He was God, He was also man. A real man with eyes, and hands that worked, and a mouth that spoke, and a brain that loved. He wept as He experienced the power of death and its effect on those He loved. He was met with anger, “You are too late.” “You let this happen.” Betrayal. Again the image of the slow dance and His betrayal came to my mind. I heard Him. “This happens in every dance I dance,” He whispered to me. The anger, the blame. How could I avoid it? All signs point to Him, this man who saw the dagger! Still, I felt compassion for Him. Loss is inevitable. We will all lose those we love, and we will all search for a reason. Jesus sweat blood before His battle with death. He felt the human emotion of fear. Of pain. Jesus hung on the cross, bloodied and bruised, for closeness to us. Because when the apple was bitten, separation became our life story. And so, Jesus died for our reunion, becoming His life story. Jesus bought our reunion. Because of the blood that the Man, Jesus, bled, I will see my father again. If my father had ever been informed of the pain I would go through, he would do all he possibly could to help me escape it. Once he discovered it was inescapable, he would find me, and he would keep me as close to him as possible, so I might be protected by him during my pain. He might hold me, though he sees the knife and cannot protect me from it, he would hold me. Given the opportunity, I know without doubt, my father would die for me, to protect me from pain. From loss. From separation.

FINDING GOD IN THE FLAMES AN ARTICLE BY AMMAR DYSON
God did not remove them from the fire, but He was with them in it. When the flames roared, instead of consuming them, they found themselves in the presence of a fourth figure—one like “a son of the gods” (Daniel 3:25). This divine presence not only protected them but also made their deliverance undeniable. The fire did not harm them, and even King Nebuchadnezzar recognized the power of their God. In Daniel 3, King Nebuchadnezzar commands all to worship a golden statue, but Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse. Their defiance leads to a sentence of death by fire. Yet, even as they stand before the furnace, their faith remains unshaken. They declare that God is able to save them, but even if He does not, they will not worship any other god. This unyielding faith, in the face of certain death, is remarkable. The furnace, heated seven times hotter than usual, should have been their end; but instead, the furnace became a place of divine encounter. The Fire of Personal Loss In April 2023, I faced a furnace of my own when I lost my brother. It was a devastating blow, a fire that threatened to consume everything I held dear—my faith, my hope, my sense of peace. The pain of loss is a fire that no one can fully prepare for, and it tests faith in ways unimaginable. Like the three men in Daniel, I was thrust into a furnace where the heat was unbearable, and the future seemed uncertain. The days following my brother’s passing were some of the darkest I’ve ever known. My faith, which had once seemed so strong, now felt fragile.
Finding God in the Midst of Loss
Faith is often portrayed as a source of strength, a guiding light through the darkest times. However, what happens when that light seems to flicker in the face of unimaginable loss? The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3 is a powerful testament to the resilience of faith even when faced with the fiercest flames. Their story, combined with personal experiences of loss, reminds us that God’s presence is constant, even in the fire.

The questions came in waves: Why did this happen? Where was God in all of this? Would I ever feel whole again? It was in this place of deep sorrow that I realized the true meaning of faith in the fire. Just as God didn’t prevent Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from entering the fire, He didn’t spare me from the pain of losing my brother. But He was with me in it. In the quiet moments of grief, I felt His presence, not as a distant deity, but as a comforting friend. There were days when I could only cry out to Him, and He was there, providing a peace that surpasses understanding. This was my furnace, and though the flames were fierce, God walked with me through every moment.
Now working with Bernie Moore Ministries, a place where I could pour out my heart and use my skills to impact the nations, not just a city. In this new chapter, I can see how God is making room for me, even in the midst of my pain. My fire allowed me to connect with others, to share my story, and to see firsthand how God can use our gifts to open doors, even when we feel most broken. The fire of loss did not consume me; instead, it refined me. Through it, God made space for healing, growth, and purpose. My passion for the lost, which I once doubted in the shadow of my grief, became the very avenue through which God brought restoration.
Finding God in the Flames
Faith in the fire is not about escaping the flames but about finding God within them. The story of Daniel 3 teaches us that God’s presence is not limited to our moments of triumph; He is with us in our deepest sorrows and darkest trials. The loss of my brother was a fire that tested my faith, but it was also a place where I encountered God in a new and profound way. Through it all, I have come to understand that faith is not the absence of doubt or pain, but the assurance that God is with us, even when the flames are hottest. My work with Bernie Moore Ministries has shown me that God can take our pain and use it to create something beautiful, making room for us in ways we could never have imagined. If you find yourself in the fire, remember that God is there with you. He may not always remove the flames, but He will walk with you through them, bringing you out on the other side, refined, strengthened, and with a deeper understanding of His love and grace.
A Gift that Made Room
“A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men” (Proverbs 18:16). This verse became a beacon of hope during my time of grief. In the midst of loss, it was easy to feel like life had come to a standstill, but God, in His infinite wisdom, had other plans. My talents as a campus pastor, communicator, leader, and more were all on the line as I once considered giving it all up. However, it was in the fire that God stirred the gift of Evangelism that had laid dormant for years and was now brought to the surface. It was no longer about reaching my community, but reaching the Nations because there was a Theo in every nation that needed to hear the Lord’s name proclaimed. This very gift is what led to me meeting Ev. Bernie Moore, which led to a divine conversation and encounter that would shape the future of my family's life.

The Bli ss ful Sting of Ma tt hew 10:39 In preparation to lead a Wednesday morning devotion for our BMM team, the Lord led me to a verse that has truly gripped me: Matthew 10:39. The NIV translation is the one I am most familiar with, and I believe it is the most common among believers: “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.” The verse is a blissful sting; a sting that demands attention and action. The Importance of Context
The Real Sting: A Fresh Look Through The Message Translation
One of my favorite translations to cross-reference with the NIV is The Message. Matthew 10:38-39 reads: “If you don’t go all the way with Me, through thick and thin, you don’t deserve Me. If your first concern is to look after yourself, you’ll never find yourself. But if you forget about yourself and look to Me, you’ll find both yourself and Me.” Like many other believers, I strive to hear ‘Well done, good and faithful servant,’ but thinking of Jesus saying, ‘Unless you walk with me through thick and thin, you do not deserve me’ (MSG) is an entirely different train of thought. That sentence really does sting. I have always appreciated The Message translation of the Word of God because it gets right to the point and is written in common language. Just imagine Jesus standing before you saying, ‘…you don’t deserve Me!’ That would just break my heart, but at the same time, it really sheds light on the fact that Jesus actually intends to walk with us through thick and thin: through the highs and lows, through the gains and the losses, through health and death. He wants to be there every step along the way, not just when it suits us. This scripture leaves us with a question: what are we willing to give up in order to follow Jesus and His perfect will and plan? What is worth surrendering to gain Him? What needs to be left at the altar in order to fully take up the cross? Once again, it’s a blissful sting. Amen! “HE WHO FINDS HIS LIFE WILL LOSE IT, AND HE WHO LOSES HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE WILL FIND IT.” MATTHEW 10:39
The context of this verse is key! Jesus was speaking to His disciples when He said this startling sentence. The disciples would not have taken Him literally or associated His words with His death—or theirs. Jesus was teaching His disciples to willingly give up their own lives in order to follow His. For modern readers, this verse is also metaphorical. Jesus is asking me, and you, to put down our own agenda and the plans we have set up for ourselves and completely surrender to Him. Of As our team began to process and share about this verse, it occurred to me that it’s actually quite radical. In one sentence, the reader is challenged/advised to ‘die to oneself.’ Furthermore, a Biblically sound phrase often used in Christian circles is that ‘one must pick up their cross and die to themselves daily.’ When I truly pondered this phrase, I was excited, but truth be told, I felt challenged. Honestly, I think this is a phrase that gets thrown around too often without a deep understanding of its meaning or application. It’s human nature to strive for things: set goals and accomplish them, or better yet, exceed expectations. Matthew 10:39 is asking that we put our goals and expectations aside for the One True Goal: to follow Jesus and submit to His plans rather than our own. course, that is easier said than done! The Radical Charge: Die to Yourself! I saw this idea play out in my early 20s, and I learned a great lesson! In college, I pursued a degree in Business with an emphasis in Finance, which led to my first ‘big-girl job’ as an Accountant. I was proud of my grades and felt very accomplished that I landed a great job straight out of college, especially one that earned a high salary. I truly thought I was happy and doing well. That was until the Lord spoke to me to let go of my Accountant role and pursue full-time ministry at my local church (making a substantially lower salary). Initially, I couldn’t understand why the Lord would ask this of me; it felt like a downgrade on all levels. However, in the end, I can clearly see this as a ‘die to yourself’ moment. Essentially, it’s dying to titles and accolades, the high- paying salary compared to working for a modest salary (like my switch from Accounting to Ministry), not making your name known, but rather making Jesus known, and walking in humility rather than selfishness. But here’s the good news, which is the second half of Matthew 10:39: ‘whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.’ I am living out this charge and truly see the benefit; I have found more happiness, contentment, and fulfillment by following Jesus’ best for me!
