A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

On Thursday Year 12 participated in a number of activities as part of their Drop Down Day. We had visiting lecturers from local universities such as St Mary’s, Roehampton and Royal Holloway, who gave the students an insight into what a lecture would be like at University. All students thoroughly enjoyed these lectures and found it exciting to learn more about specific degree courses. We also had our careers networking event, where students heard from people from a number of different fields, such as marketing, charities, the Army and a criminal defence solicitor. The students gained valuable insight into various career pathways that they may not have considered. Our Media students have spent today attending the EGX Video gaming conference at the London Excel. As part of their A level course, they need to analyse video games, so they all found the conference engaging and have all said it is going to help them with their future studies. We had a fantastic Black History Month assembly today, presented to our Year 12 students by Mrs Dhir. The students said they found it inspiring and thought provoking. The Sixth Form Netball team played in the U18 Borough netball tournament on Wednesday afternoon. With 6 games to play, the students showed excellent teamwork and versatility as we rotated combinations of players. The team played exceptionally well and came 4th overall. Huge thanks to Sara Morton for sponsoring their new Netball kit - the students looked absolutely fantastic on court!

Significant Black Figure of the Week

Meet Trailblazer Candice Carty-Williams

She became the first black author to win book of the year at the British Book Awards.

Before writing her first novel she worked in publishing where she noticed how few people of colour there were writing and publishing books. So she took action and created the Guardian and 4th Estate BAME Short Story Prize, to improve the diversity of the publishing world “I am proud yes but I’m also sad and confused that I’m the first black AND female author to have won this award since it began,” she continued. “Overall, this win makes me hopeful that although I’m the first, the industry are waking up to the fact that I shouldn’t and won’t be the last.”
