The Den caters mainly to parents, caretakers, and young children, but Lipe emphasizes that the space is open to all good-hearted community members, and she strives to make all feel welcome. “Community provokes connection,” Lipe states. Her hope is that community members will enjoy the coffee shop, see the play areas, and think of people they know who would find The Den’s resources helpful. When stepping into The Den, the coffee I t’s no secret that parenting is challenging. Full of ups, downs, and even a sideways turn here and there, it’s a life-long journey that requires dedication. This dedication can often feel isolating, especially when the hyper-focus on being the “perfect” parent overwhelms all other priorities in life. But while perfect parenting doesn’t exist, good community does, and it can make the trials of parenting so much lighter. Nestled in Denver’s Highland neighborhood lives The Den, a community hub designed for sparking connections. Dreamt up by founder Chandler Lipe, a Denver mom and entrepreneurial spirit, The Den was born out of a desire to bring people together in a calm and safe environment, and, according to Lipe, “appreciate the profoundness of parenthood.”

classic coffee favorites as well as a seasonal menu and pastries from local businesses. Further into the space you’ll find a large open play area with plenty of comfortable seating. Past that, there’s a classroom at the back that serves as a conference room and second playroom. And finally, for the parents who need some quiet time, the Treatment Room is available with dim lights, a sound machine, and cozy furniture. The Den offers programmed events such as CPR classes, baby bodywork classes, support groups, and seasonal celebrations. The coffee shop is open to the public, but to get access to the rest of the building, a membership or day pass is required. It’s clear that The Den’s interior was purposefully designed to reflect its mission. Everything from the toys available to the art

on the walls creates a calming environment to exist in. Even the seating was intentionally arranged to allow for natural connections to occur. On The Den’s design choices, Lipe says it’s important to her that “people feel safe while [they’re] existing in a state of vulnerability.” Lipe and her leadership team know first- hand the difficulties of parenting: the isolating feelings of postpartum, the nervousness of meeting other parents, and the exhaustion from monitoring children in an overcrowded play place. The Den aims to meet parents where they’re at and welcome them into a restful space where they can recognize those feelings and let them fade away. Placing priority on connection over perfection, The Den serves as a reminder to parents and community members that they’re not on this journey alone.

Top 5 Toy Safety Tips

12 COLORADO PARENT DECEMBER 2024 level, and physical abilities. While the small bricks of a building set or the mini accessories that come with a doll aren’t the best choice for your young children due to choking hazards, older children typically possess better motor skills and awareness that will prevent safety mishaps. 2) Inspect Tech-Enhanced W ith Christmas approaching, your kid is probably excitedly anticipating all the new toys they’ll find waiting for them under the tree. Toys these days are super cool, with all sorts of advanced features and fun designs. But picking out a toy for your kiddo can be hard, especially if those aforementioned features and designs might post a safety risk for your little one. Below you’ll find our top five tips based on the Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines, so that your child can play at peace. 1) Make Sure It’s Age-Appropriate. Consider your child’s age, interests, maturity

Toys for Security. Some toys have a lot of tech features, making it a great way for your child to feel grown up while still enjoying creative play. But be sure that the tech offered on the toy is kid-friendly. If the toy can connect to the internet, ensure that there are parental controls so that you can monitor activity. Look the toy over to see if there are any signs of wires sticking out, or eroded batteries. 3) Look for Sharp Points, Splintering, and Dangerous Edges. Wooden toys are making a comeback as people search for alternatives to the many over-stimulating toys on the market. They’re a great option for parents looking to encourage independent play, but the chances of splintering are higher. Check that whatever toy you purchase, whether wooden or plastic, doesn’t have sharp points. Nobody wants to pull a splinter out of their thumb or pull out the Band-Aids on Christmas day. 4) Check for Rust or

Other Signs of Toxicity. Many toys have components that can wear easily if not properly cared for. Check the toy for rust, peeling paint, melted plastic, odd smells, and safety labels. The Consumer Product Safety Safety Commission at cpsc. gov is a great resource for ensuring that the toy doesn’t have any active recalls. 5) Watch While They Play. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your child when they play with new toys to see if there are any safety concerns you might have missed when shopping for the toy. Children tend to find creative ways to make an otherwise safe toy dangerous. Toy shopping can be overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to balance excitement with safety. By following these five tips, you can help ensure that playtime stays fun and worry-free for both you and your child. Give the gift of safe play by choosing toys that are built to last. For more toy safety resources, visit cpsc.gov or consult with a trusted retailer.

Understanding RSV BY SANONNA AL TAWEEL PHOTO BY FREEPIK.COM

24 COLORADO PARENT DECEMBER 2024

Symptoms, prevention, and care tips for families. W ith the arrival of the winter season comes an increase in sickness. The combination of colder weather and more indoor gatherings means it’s easier to contract a viral infection, and one of the most common viruses passed around is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). What is RSV? Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an infec- tion that can cause cold-like symptoms. Symptoms include a dry or runny nose, dry cough, low-grade fever, sore throat, sneezing, and headaches. Though similar to a common cold, the symptoms of RSV are usually more severe, and if left untreated, can develop into more serious illnesses like pneumonia or bronchitis.

Just like any other viral infection, the illness is spread through germs passed from one person to another. The virus can enter through the mouth, eyes, or nose. Close contact with infected people will likely result in contracting the infection. RSV symptoms begin to show up 2-8 days after exposure. The infection is no longer considered conta- gious after 24 hours free of fever. According to Children’s Hospital Colorado, “Your child can also get the virus by touching a contaminated surface and then rubbing their eyes or touching their finger to their mouth or nose. The virus can live on hard surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches or crib railings, for several hours.” RSV can be contracted by anyone, but young children and people with weakened immune systems are at an increased risk. Not only can they contract the virus more easily, it’s also more dangerous for them as the virus attacks the respiratory system. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that an estimated 58,000-80,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized due to RSV every year in the United States. Treating RSV Who is most at risk for RSV?

The Mayo Clinic recommends plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, over-the-counter medi- cation for managing a fever, use of saline drops to clear a stuffy nose, and lots of rest. It’s important to monitor symptoms. If the coughing worsens to a wheezing sound, symptoms persist for more than a week, or there’s a fever over 104 degrees, then you should see a doctor. Best ways to prevent RSV - Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. - Keep hands away from your face, nose, and mouth. - Keep hand sanitizer nearby and use it after touching public surfaces. - Stay home if you or your child is sick. - Avoid contact with anyone who has a viral infection. RSV cases have been on the rise each year, but by learning more about the infection and practicing preventative measures, you can minimize the risks and help keep your family safe this season. Consult a trusted health- care provider for more detailed resources and information.

Things to Consider: Kids’ Vaccines

BY SANONNA AL TAWEEL PHOTO BY FREEPIK.COM

28 COLORADO PARENT DECEMBER 2024 The winter months see an increase in com- monly spread illnesses like the flu or RSV due to the colder weather and indoor social gatherings. Vaccines play a critical role in preventing these infections, making it so that your family can participate in commu- your little one’s health this season. UNDERSTANDING VACCINES Vaccines work by introducing a weakened version of a disease-causing agent (AKA a virus or bacteria) into the body, which trig- gers the immune system to create antibodies against that pathogen and trains the body to fight off that type of infection without causing illness. T he health and wellness of your child is always a priority, but the winter season tends to highlight the desire for a healthy kid amongst an uptick of eas- ily spread illnesses and exciting holiday festivities drawing near. As you prepare for a fun-filled holiday season, it’s important to consider preventative measures so that your family can focus on making long-lasting memories without sickness being part of the story. The conversation surrounding children’s vaccines can be full of questions, concerns, and even misconceptions. Understanding the role of vaccinations can help you feel better prepared to protect your child’s health throughout the holidays. Let’s unpack some considerations regarding children’s vacci- nations and tips for how you can safeguard

nity events with lesser risk of contracting an illness. By staying up-to-date on vaccines, you’re contributing to “herd immunity,” which protects those who are unable to be vaccinated, such as infants, pregnant women, or those with weakened immune systems. COLORADO VACCINE GUIDELINES Colorado follows the guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The schedules created by these organizations outline when children should receive their vaccines, based on age and health needs. Additionally, Colorado has immunization requirements for children who attend school. Typically these vaccines are for diseases like measles, chickenpox, and mumps–diseases that are highly contagious. Check out cdc.gov or aap.org for more infor- mation regarding immunization schedules and helpful resources to better understand the different vaccinations available. There is overwhelming evidence that sup- ports the safety and efficacy of vaccines, but there are many misconceptions commonly spread that can cause confusion and fear among parents trying to make the best deci- sion for their child’s health. One common misconception about vacci- MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT VACCINES

nations is that they can cause autism. This claim originated from a discredited 1998 study that was later retracted by its author. There has been extensive research looking into possible links between vaccinations and developmental conditions, but the results of these studies disprove any such links. A 2015 study funded by the National Health Institute found that there was no correlation between the MMR vaccine and autism, even in higher-risk children. Another misconception about vaccines is that they are full of chemicals that do more harm than good. While vaccines do contain preservative ingredients and rely on chem- ical reactions that enhance the response from an immune system, these substances are used in very small and safe quantities. The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology says, “Any substance can be harmful in significantly high doses, even water. Vaccines contain ingredients at a dose that is even lower than the dose we are natu- rally exposed to in our environment.” Vaccinations undergo rigorous research and testing before they are released for public use. They are an essential tool in keeping children and communities safe from con- tracting dangerous illnesses. Don’t let mis- conceptions about immunizations scare you; research vaccines and talk to a trusted pedi- atrician about any concerns you may have. Making an informed choice not only benefits your family’s health but your community’s as well.
