river by building' a dam across it, and you light a city and start the wheels turning in a thousand factories . . , Oh, that we thirsted after Christ! Then there would flow from every one of us what this thirsty world needs more than anything else—life-giving torrents. —Robert A. Laidlaw. Deliverance "Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me" (Psa. 50:15). Whene’er sore trouble gripped and crushed the land, And on the Lord they cried in that dark hour, Then He whose ear is open to our cry, Whose arm is shortened not in sav ing power, Whose deep compassions fail not ever more, Who fainteth not, nor weariness doth know, He heard their cry, and by His mighty hand, He brought them out of their distress and woe. • —Mary Brainerd Smith. 15. A Background of Experience “Repent ye therefore, and be con verted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19). Who said this? It was Peter—the man who had experienced it. Thè man who had denied his Lord with oaths, but who had been forgiven, and then been made the preacher of the first gospel sermon! Here He is pleading with men to repent that their sins might be blotted out. He knew whereof he spoke. He had repented with tears, and then had come prayer and Pentecost. —Lionel B. Fletcher. The Unity of the Church “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling” (Eph. 4:4). If a chain is stretched across a river, you see it at either side, but it dips in the middle, and . . you might suppose the chain has given way at the center. So is' it with the church of God. It was seen to be indivisible at the beginning; it will be seen to be one by and by; and it is one now, though the unity be not visible to mortal eyes.—C. H. M. The Cost of Revival “ O Lord, revive thy work in tl .3 midst of the years’” (Hab. 3:2). How many of us find ourselves in a condition of desperate need, earnestly desiring from God revival! But we know very little about revival, unless we understand, as one of its elements, that 14. 16. 17.

9. The Shadow of Self “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing” (Rom. 7:18). Michael Angelo, the peerless Italian sculptor, when molding his masterpiece, always affixed to his cap a small lamp, lest perchance his own shadow falling on the statue should cause him to mar its perfection. What an object lesson for the Christian worker! How fre quently the shadow of self, falling on our holiest service for the Master, limits its effectiveness and robs Him of His glory.—J. Oswald Sanders. 10. Why He Punishes “You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities” (Amos 3:2). The more dear we are to God, the more care He will expend on us. The more fruit-bearing qualities we possess, the more thoroughly shall we be pruned. . . . Take heart, suffering child of God! He chastens because He loves, and is about to use you. Be careful to ascertain the evil thing which grieves Him, and put it away.—F. B. Meyer. Claiming God’s Promises “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mk. 11:24). Faith is not working up by will power a sort of certainty that something is coming to pass. It is seeing as an ac tual fact th&t God has said that this thing shall come to pass, and then re joicing to know that it is true and rest ing and entering into it because God has said it. Faith turns the promise into prophecy.—A. B. Simpson. Burned-out Worlds “Ye did run- well; who did hinder you?” (Gal. 5:7). How many a once-illuminated soul has to admit that ,its lamp has gone out! Astronomers tell us of worlds that have lost their fires. They burned brightly once. Now they are cold and dark. Their very existence can be known only by a mathematical computation. Many a Christian, too, has lost his light-giving power; and none but the great Astronomer, who numbereth the stars, can see him in His firmament at all.—G. H. Knight. 18. Mighty Torrents "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink . . . out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37, 38). Out of our inner being shall gush tor rents of living water, not singular, but plural rivers — Mississippis, Ganges, Niles, Amazons. Try to stop a mighty 11. 12.
