of product shipment and returns. Previously, the barcodes were applied as white labels at the fulfillment centers. Printing the barcodes inline on a folder-gluer is more cost-efficient and eliminates the concern that a label might fall off during shipping. Another reason why the customer wanted an alterna- tive way to print the barcodes was because it couldn’t get 15 digits on a label. Unrealized Potential The ability to meet the customer’s needs has forged a strong alliance, Darling says. “We feel we’re in for lon- gevity now as a partner, and that’s hard to come by these days.” Custom Packaging signed a three-year agreement to print the barcodes. The company is also installing a DPi unit on a mini flexo at another Hood-owned company, Packaging Unlimited in Franklin, Kentucky. Tuggle says the agreement is to provide 4.5 to 5 million boxes a year. “We

The Lebanon facility ships about 60,000 boxes a week and the Franklin facility ships about 40,000 a week to the retailer’s distribution center. “There are three other distri- bution centers that will come on line once this gets going system wide for the customer. We envision that we will have other Hood facilities that will also get installations,” Darling says. This was DPi’s first installation on a mini flexo, accord- ing to Stu Brownell, DPi Director of Corrugated Applica- tions, but it was not DPi’s first retrofit. Other installations The barcodes are printed after the corrugated sheets come out of the printing stations and before they are folded and glued.
