Caring for Seed
Caring for Sod Sod requires consistent moisture and protection for 2 weeks and can be installed in most temperatures, even freezing if they can cut it! Timeline: 2-3 weeks Protection : Avoid disturbances or mowing. Moisture: Sod must be kept damp the entire two weeks and cannot dry out. This means more water cycles in hot seasons, and less in cool seasons. Example Fall Schedule: For the first seven days we suggest you water three times a day, at 6 AM, 8 AM, and 10 PM. From day eight to fourteen, slightly reduce your watering to twice a day. We recommend 7 AM and 10 AM as your watering times. After that, you can return to a normal watering schedule.
Grass seed requires consistent moisture and protection for 4-8 weeks with mild to moderate temperatures. A dormant seeding can be done in freezing temps as well, but the seed will not germinate until temperatures warm up. Timeline: 4-8 weeks Protection : Maintain straw, pellet, or soil coverings over seed during the establishment period and avoid disturbances or mowing. Moisture: Before seeds begin to sprout- Keep consistently moist without flooding. (Standing puddles could rot the seeds). Water several times a day on a set cycle based on your irrigation coverage to water deeply, allow the water to absorb, then repeat throughout the day. After seeds sprout- Water 2-3 times per day, early morning and late afternoon are best. Water deeply and repeat this schedule for three weeks. Weeks 4 to 8- Adapt your fresh seeds to your regular turf watering schedule. Mowing: Don’t mow until the seedlings have reached a height of about 4 inches and never remove more than 25% of the height at a time. Our suggestion is to begin mowing around 6 weeks.
Mowing: Don’t mow for 2 weeks Tips:
If sod begins to yellow or decline, it can be saved by determining if it’s too much or too little moisture and adjusting your watering. You or your irrigation professional will need to monitor daily for two weeks.
