MARCH

Spring seasonal color installations Start-up irrigation systems Remove mulch from early bulbs and perennials Fertilize gardens with a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 or 16-16-16) Clean up/divide perennials by cutting back dead foliage Prepare soil for spring planting Turn under cover crops/winter mulch Prune all leafy shrubs and trees that need pruning except spring flowering plants, birches, maples, and walnuts Cut ornamental grasses back about three to five inches from the ground Begin planting trees and shrubs Mulch crops for moisture conservation and weed control Apply a pre-emergent weed control to beds Monitor and control weeds

Prune spring flowering shrubs such as forsythia and lilac (after blooming) Plant new ground cover Fertilize roses Mowing begins Do not remove foliage from spring flowering bulbs because that growth is needed for next year's flower Begin annual plantings Keep trees and shrubs watered Fertilize young trees to promote new growth Monitor and control weeds Spring hardscape servicing Assess drainage
