Watering
SPECIAL NOTES
Watering requirements will vary depending on the season. Spring and summer plantings will require more than fall plantings. Rainfall should be considered. A good soaking rain may be sufficient for watering. Don’t cancel your irrigation due to rain if it isn’t a heavy rain. Until a new plant is established, the root ball may dry out faster than the surrounding soil . To determine if plant needs water, check the root ball. During extreme heat, some plants (Hydrangeas and Dogwoods for example), can show signs of wilting even when they have sufficient water. If this happens, simply check the soil moisture. If the plant is receiving enough water, it will ‘perk up’ when temperatures cool at night. Over-watering causes plants to wilt and looks similar to the signs of under-watering.
When soil stays wet for an extended time, root damage can occur due to oxygen depletion . As a result, leaves wilt and do not recover, even if water is added. If this happens, allow the soil to dry and continue watering as needed. Many trees require special watering for 3 seasons and then as needed after that . Most smaller plants need at least one year of special watering and then as needed. (Even well established plants can suffer during a drought and may require watering.)
