NON-PROFITS continued Gabe Spataro’s Long Awaiting Dive on Christ of the Abyss, Key Largo, FL
preserving its wonders for future generations. A Long-Awaited Dive Despite his instrumental role in bringing the statue to Florida, Spataro never had the chance to dive and see it himself. By 2013, he was in his eighties and legally blind, yet his dream to visit the statue remained. Elliott, with the help of Rainbow Reef Dive Center in Key Largo, organized a special dive for Spataro and a few of his fel- low veterans.
Elliott’s documentary, The Legend of the Statue , has been met with widespread acclaim. Viewers are inspired not only by Spataro’s story but also by the work Diveheart does to transform lives through adaptive scuba diving. “The film has helped raise aware- ness about the power of de- termination and community,” Elliott said. The statue itself continues to attract divers from around the world, fostering a sense
of unity and shared reverence for the underwater world. Its enduring legacy reminds visitors of the delicate bal- ance between humanity and nature and the importance of preserving this balance for future generations. A Lasting Message
On the day of the dive, emotions ran high. Surrounded by supporters, including media coverage from the Miami Herald , Spataro descended into the water. Guided by touch, he explored the statue, starting at its
base and feeling his way around its out- stretched arms. “There were tears all around,” Elliott said. “This was the man who brought the statue to Florida, and he was finally ex- periencing its majesty first- hand.” The dive not only fulfilled Spataro’s lifelong dream but also highlighted the inclusive power of adaptive diving. For many, it was a moment that transcended individual achieve- ment, reflecting the strength of community and the human spirit’s ability to overcome limitations. The Legacy of the Christ of the Abyss
Elliott hopes the documentary encour- ages viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the ocean and how they can contribute to its preservation. “Whether it’s

through diving, supporting marine conservation, or shar- ing stories like Gabe’s, we all have a role to play,” he em- phasized.
Spataro’s journey is a testa- ment to the idea that one per- son’s vision can touch countless lives. “Gabe’s life reminds us to em- brace adventure, face challenges head- on, and find joy in connecting with others,” Elliott said. For those who have not yet
visited the Christ of the Abyss, Elliott has a simple rec- ommendation: “Go. It’s a truly magical experience.”
The Christ of the Abyss holds a profound place in the hearts of divers. More than just a piece of art, it serves as a symbol of peace, protection, and connection. For those who descend to see it, the experience is both spiritual and awe-inspiring. “It reminds us of the fragility and beauty of the ocean,” Elliott explained. “Gabe’s story adds an- other layer of meaning—it’s about perseverance, adven- ture, and leaving a legacy.”
