On Track From all indications, GCI is on track to continue its steady growth. Future expansion will come from existing customers and new markets, such as medical and cosmet- ics, and expanding even more geographically. Mickiewicz says his biggest challenge is bumping up against the commodity mindset of customers. “It used to be that folding carton was separate from corrugated. Now it’s all lumped together and it’s getting tougher to convince a potential buyer about the benefits of a company like ours when a lot of them are just concerned about price. We’re in a good spot with the new equipment that we added last year. That has really helped us continue our responsive- ness to our customers.” Ruebenson adds, “We’re not the cheapest guy on the block or the most expensive. When we do get in the door starting as a backup supplier, most of the time we become the primary supplier. We win them over with service and quality.” ABB To Provide Power Systems For New-Indy Rebuild In SC New-Indy Containerboard has chosen ABB to provide the integrated electrical and automation systems and equip- ment for its Columbia paper machine rebuild in Catawba, South Carolina. A leading supplier of high-quality recycled containerboard for the corrugated box industry, New-Indy is rebuilding its Number 3 paper machine to diversify its product capabilities. The new technology and equipment being installed by ABB comprises paper machine and winder machine drive systems, ABB AbilityTM System 800xA Quality Control System, ABB AbilityTM System 800xA Open Control Sys- tem, L&W Autoline for automated paper testing, as well as process motors and power products equipment. The integration of these systems will enable a single view of all production activities to ensure the highest levels of pro- cess efficiency, product quality, power stability and equip- ment reliability. “The acquisition of the Catawba Mill and additional in- vestment in its infrastructure will establish one of the most diverse and efficient mill operations in the industry,” said Rick Hartman, Chief Operating Officer for New-Indy. “We are excited about the prospects for this mill and the oppor- tunity to supply lightweight kraft linerboard to the industri- al packaging marketplace. Our investment in the Catawba Mill will further strengthen our strategy to be the best com- pany at serving the increasing needs of our customers.” New-Indy is a joint-venture that was formed in 2012 by theKraft Group andSchwarz Partners, LP, two family-owned companies with long histories in paper and packaging. To- day, New-Indy operates three recycled brown paper mills and eight packaging facilities in the United States.
