A CALL TO ACTION FROM THE PRE ANTHONYHOSKISSON

both to the General Committee and ask Members to meet up with them, have a chat and accentuate this welcome when they are able. AS I HAVE STATED ABOVE, THE CLUB IS RUN ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS BY INDIVIDUALS STANDING UP TO TAKE ON VERY IMPORTANT ROLES, ALL OF WHICH ARE DONE ON

MATT FILIPO We would like to place on record our gratitude to Matt Filipo. He has been associated with the Club since he first came to these shores from New Zealand in 1996. Matt has served the club as a player representing all teams at some

stage in his distinguished career as well as being 1st XV captain (2000-2003), being a coach in the Mini juniors as well as volunteering in many different roles, most notably facilitating barbecues during the summer and more recently helping with the catering provision in the downstairs hatch. Matt has served as Chairman from 2021 until Sept 2025. All of these roles he has undertaken as a volunteer. Without such dedicated volunteers, our club would not survive and he has led by example with regards to this never afraid to roll his sleeves up! Matt will continue to volunteer

A VOLUNTEERING BASIS. WE MUST REMEMBER THE GREAT DEBT THAT ALL OF OUR MEMBERS OWE THESE INDIVIDUALS AND SUPPORT THEM WHENEVER POSSIBLE BY PROVIDING CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK. How can you help? This is a real call to action. There are numerous opportunities for members and parents where you could assist those already actively helping our great club. Please see the list below and a broad outline of what is required in each area. The Friday Club This is a group to whom we owe so much. They meet regularly on a Friday, although in recent weeks have been known to be in the Club most days. They are responsible for lots of general maintenance around and about the Club, both inside and outside. Most recently they have been responsible for redecoration in certain areas of the Clubhouse ie The Den, formally known as the Arthur Bell room. The list could go on and on. Over the last few years they have saved the Club literally thousands of pounds and are always looking for people to help them. If you’re passionate about DIY, please let us know as your services will be very much appreciated. Fylde Ladies A wonderful group of our women members facilitate match day fundraising with the now famous Fylde raffle, as well as organising events. The most noticeable event is Fylde Ladies Day which is enjoyed by many. They would like to arrange and organise more events and are always looking for volunteers to help with these. If you have been involved in fundraising activities of any kind and would like to see

in various aspects of the club but has relinquished his position as Chairman for a number of reasons. Matt has been working very closely with Matt Thompson who has been acting as a Vice Chairman for the last six months. Before Matt

made his decision to resign he consulted with MattT as to whether he would be happy to take on the role which we are delighted to confirm that he has agreed to. In line with the Club’s constitution this change was proposed to the General Committee on the 30th of September, was unanimously agreed by all present, and took effect from the 1st of October. Matt Thompson said: “It’s an honour to take on the role of Chairman at Fylde with deep rooted history and strong community spirit. Fylde has always stood for more than just rugby — it’s about values, teamwork and pride in the shirt. My focus is on building on that legacy, supporting our teams at every level, and ensuring the club continues to thrive for generations to come.” We also have a new Treasurer, Matthew Pomroy, who has been involved recently with the Mini-Juniors. We welcome

your Club prosper, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Car Park We are indebted to volunteers who assist with the car park planning on match days to maximise capacity in the car park. Currently we rely on two gentlemen to do this and they would gladly appreciate any assistance that can be given. Match Day Entrance Gate In recent years we have struggled to get volunteers to staff the Gate. This year we have made a decision that all those entering the Club on match days should come through the main club external entrance. (We must thank Glasdons for their support and providing us with our new kiosk, and Waring Buildings for facilitating its collection, delivery and positioning). We would be delighted to hear from anyone who feels that they can spare a couple of hours on a match day to assist with the running of the Gate. Club Shop This is currently run by volunteers on Saturday match days and Sunday mornings. it is open Monday to Friday, 9-5, and supported by our contracted staff. We will be unable to facilitate the opening of the shop on Saturdays and Sunday mornings without volunteers coming forward to assist. Please contact us at your earliest convenience if

the last 12 months and look forward to continuing to move forward. We will only be able to strengthen our position in all areas with the continued support of our members, particularly those who are prepared to volunteer. We ask that if you are unable to volunteer, that you support the Club’s events whether it be match day hospitality or our newly refurbished Bar 22, which will be open at designated times during the week particularly when there is an attractive sporting event on. We are incredibly proud of our 106 years of history and have to be forward thinking in the way the club is operated in the future. To that end we are looking at many ways in which we can generate more revenue for the club. We will shortly be announcing some more detail to the planning application. If you feel that you can provide any assistance in any of the areas above or indeed those in the list attached please do not hesitate to email either myself on president@ fylderugby.co.uk or Neil Riley, our Club secretary on secretary@fylderugby.co.uk.

you are able to assist. Big Christmas Draw

We are looking to arrange a major fund raising event at Christmas, by way of a Christmas draw. To date we have several major prizes. However, we would be delighted to have a few more. It is intended to hold the draw at a date to be advised in December with a good old fashioned Christmas Carol singalong. COULD ANY INDIVIDUALS WHO PLAY A BRASS MUSICAL INSTRUMENT CONTACT ‘HOSKI’ president@fylderugby.co.uk. These are the main areas that require bolstering at the current time, although in the attached document there are many other roles that need fulfilling throughout the course of the year. It would be fair to say that along with all other community clubs, we are experiencing difficult times with player numbers, volunteers and finances. We need to appreciate the many changes to which the club has undergone during

end of the table, going head-to-head in front of a passionate crowd. We’ll be looking to bring intensity, discipline, and a bit of Fylde flair to proceedings, and I’ve no doubt the lads are up for the challenge. “Thank you, as always, for your incredible support. Your energy from the stands makes a real difference, and we’ll be doing everything we can to give you a performance to be proud of. Enjoy the game.”

Chris Briers says: “Good afternoon and welcome back to Woodlands for what promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of the early pace- setters in this season’s campaign. “We extend a warm welcome to our visitors Sheffield RFC, who arrive full of confidence after a perfect start to the season, winning all five of their opening fixtures. Their form speaks volumes about the quality and cohesion they’ve built, and we know we’ll need to be at our very best to match them across the park. “For our part, I’m proud of the way our lads have started the season. Four wins and a hard-fought draw show the character

and resilience within this group. We’ve shown flashes of the attacking rugby we pride ourselves on, and our defensive

organisation has continued to improve week by week. That said, we know there’s still plenty of room for growth, and this weekend presents a fantastic opportunity to test ourselves against one of the league’s in-form sides. “Games like this are why we play the sport. Two teams in good form, both with ambitions for the top

UPDATE MINI-JUNIOR

breaking and Fylde were relieved winners 24-15. A great start. Fylde U15 v Trafford MV U15 – Lancs Cup Round 1 After what felt like an extended summer break from The Woodlands, the Fylde boys returned to action for their first home match of the season—a highly anticipated and competitive fixture against a strong Trafford MV side, played in blustery conditions to start their defence of the Lancs Cup that they won a few short months ago at the end of the U14 season. Both teams made a scrappy start, conceding several early penalties as they adjusted to the challenging wind. Fylde capitalised when they won a scrum deep in Trafford’s 22-metre area. Fylde were awarded a penalty, with Henry F making the most of the wind at his back and slotted the kick to put Fylde ahead 3-0 after just five minutes. Trafford then began to dominate at the breakdown, applying sustained pressure. Unfortunately for Fylde, Henry F was forced off after picking up a heavy knock to his knee during a ruck. Despite this setback, Fylde showed great skill with swift handling out of the breakdown, allowing Tom C to dart over in the corner for the first try of the match. Harvey A stepped up for the conversion but was unable to add the extras from a difficult angle, leaving the score at 8-0 to Fylde. Trafford continued to control the breakdown, and a series of poor decisions from Fylde saw Trafford camped in their twenty- two. Three consecutive penalties and a stern word from the referee followed, before Trafford powered over for their opening try. The conversion attempt missed, keeping the score at 8-5 to Fylde after fifteen minutes. Almost immediately from the restart, Trafford responded in style, launching a powerful drive and displaying slick handling to cross in the corner for a well-constructed team try. The conversion drifted wide, but Trafford had seized the lead at 10-8 with 18 minutes played. With their confidence growing, Trafford began to assert further dominance. Fylde were forced onto the back foot, defending their try line with spirited determination. Thanks to some outstanding and resolute physical defending from the entire Fylde side, they eventually forced a turnover and cleared their lines. Despite this, Trafford’s relentless pressure soon resulted in a penalty. A pinpoint kick to the corner set up a classic driving maul, and the Trafford forwards powered over for their second try of the afternoon. Again, the conversion was missed, giving Trafford a 15-8 advantage after 25 minutes.

U16s Lancs Cup Round 1: Fylde 24 Aldwinians 15

After winning the U15s Lancs Bowl last year, hopes are high for this group. Being promoted to a higher league as a result of that win created some apprehension amongst the group but after 2 friendly victories out of 2 so far this season meant they went into round 1 with some confidence. The squad has deepened a little with some new players joining and Dylan B, Charlie T made their debuts. The game was played in tough conditions, with winds still blowing strong at the back end of Storm Amy. Fylde started badly, with Alwdinians scoring an early try - the team was clearly not fully witched on and numerous missed tackles allowed a free run to the line. Instead of heads going down however, it seemed to snap the group into focus and soon after, Fin L started this campaign where he had left off from last year’s final with scorching pace to beat everyone from the half way line untouched. With the conversion for Henry C it was a lead that Fylde were never to relinquish. It was a scrappy half from there, there were moments of good play from Oakley W and Will G and despite being their own worst enemy, with mistakes through trying to force the play too much and penalties conceded, Fylde scored again with around 10 mins to go in the first half. Henry C fielded a poor opposition exit kick and set about launching an attack. Tev B made strong yards before offloading and the ball then moved quickly back to Henry again who saw a gap, drawing players before putting Fin L in at the corner. The last play of the half saw Jack W intercept a loose pass, as he was caught he looked to offload but unfortunately only to an Alwdinians player, who promptly took advantage of the broken field and managed to get the ball out to their big winger who then scored in the corner. It was an unlucky turn of events just before the half time whistle. The second half started brightly, with Fylde looking after the ball much more carefully. The scrum had been powerful weapon the 1st half, Jayden F and Ty dominating up front. Zac R and Reuben made some good yards and there was good defensive work from David H and Aadi S, looking evermore the archetypal open side. The pressure told around ten minutes in when Fylde managed to execute a driving maul from a line out at the 5m, Jack W scoring the try. Aldwinians then began an extended period of pressure, held up over the line then dropping the ball close to scoring, before finally getting over the line in the corner to bring the scores back to 17-15. With around 5 minutes to go, some great work across the whole team, and a barnstorming run from Jack K, set Fylde up with an easy two on 1 for Will G to go through the gap and score one of his easier finishes. He doesn’t miss from there. Henry C put the conversion over to extend the gap to a more comfortable 9 points. Relentless pressure from Aldwinians and a yellow card for Fylde meant it was a real backs to the wall finish, a real defensive effort was delivered, the line never looked like

As the first half drew to a close, Fylde rallied and advanced deep into Trafford territory. The forwards piled on the pressure,

hammering away at the Trafford defensive line. James S looked to have scored after crashing over, only to be held up by some resolute defending. Undeterred, Fylde continued to press and were rewarded with a penalty, which they kicked to the corner. Another well-executed driving maul and swift work at the base of the ruck saw James S touch down, with Harvey A converting to level the scores at 15-apiece. In the dying moments of the half, James W delivered a sublime kick into open space, perfectly weighted for Tom C to chase down and finish in the corner for his second try. A superb score to close out the half with Fylde leading 20-15 at the break. HT: Fylde 20-15 Trafford MV The second half began with some sage advice from the Fylde coaching team, as the side now faced the challenge of playing into the stiff wind. Early in the half, Tom B produced an outstanding turnover, earning Fylde a penalty. A well-judged kick to the corner set up an excellent driving maul, culminating in Will H crashing over from the base of the ruck, extending Fylde’s led to 25-15. Harvey A was unlucky with the difficult conversion attempt, which drifted wide. The match continued to be a bruising physical affair, with both sides fully committed and several players forced off through injury. Manny E was one such casualty after taking a knock at the ruck, highlighting the relentless nature of the contest. Will H, having already made his mark on the scoreboard, produced a powerful run to halt Trafford’s momentum. However, he found himself isolated and was turned over, handing possession back to the opposition. Fylde’s defensive resolve was then tested, with Henry L and Harry W delivering some excellent try line defence. Kai S produced a crucial turnover with a determined dive, giving Fylde the platform to launch an ambitious counterattack from their own line. Some slick handling and incisive running from the Fylde backs carried play up field, setting the stage for Will H to cross again and increase the lead to 30-15. Trafford, refusing to give in, mounted one final assault and managed to crash over for a converted try after sustained pressure on the Fylde line, narrowing the final score to 30-22 as the match concluded. This enthralling and physical contest provided plenty of lessons for the Fylde squad, who showed resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity, with several players stepping into unfamiliar positions or playing through the pain barrier. Trafford, too, can take pride in their performance, having pushed Fylde all the way in a fiercely competitive Lancashire Cup encounter. Both sides demonstrated tremendous spirit, making for another memorable tussle in this respected rivalry. Rest up boys!! Go well Manny E and Henry F speedy recovery boys.

U14s report: Fylde v Fleetwood

5th October was supposed to be the Fylde u14’s first Lancashire Cup game,

but unfortunately, Orrell were unable

to provide a team so we got a walkover. Luckily, Fleetwood u14’s were in the same situation with Blackburn not having a team, so a friendly was arranged. In very muddy conditions, Fylde quickly took the lead with a sub 30 second try by Joe H, followed by tries by Jackson S, three in a row by Logan C and one for Daithi A. Harry S got 4 conversions. Fylde kept up the pressure in the second half with tries from Logan C, Will H, Harry S and Raff L-C. 2 conversions for Harry S and one for Raff L-C. Fylde’s defence was as good as it’s attack, with some great tackles, strong scrums and Liam K carrying an opponent into touch and Fylde keeping a clean sheet.

A great performance by the Fylde team. Defender of the day was Harry S

SAM’S WHEELCHAIR RUGBY JOURNEY: AN INCLUSIVE SPORT FOR EVERYBODY

At the Fylde Rugby Community Foundation, we believe rugby truly is a sport for everyone. Thanks to the support of Wareing Buildings and J&M Cars, our free weekly wheelchair rugby sessions at AKS Lytham St Annes give people of all abilities the chance to be active, social, and part of a supportive team. One of the many inspiring stories to come from these sessions is Sam’s. Finding Confidence Through Wheelchair Rugby: Sam joined wheelchair rugby during a difficult time in his life. His mental health had taken a dip in his final year of high school, leaving him feeling low and withdrawn. But since starting the sessions, things have changed dramatically. “I’ve lost over 30kg since I’ve started wheelchair rugby. My mental health was feeling low in my last year of high school and it provided me with space to have fun, chill out and be sociable, which has helped my mental health return to normal. It’s made me more confident to talk to people and even take public transport, like a taxi from college sometimes. I’m a bit less shy than I was. I like the team atmosphere and the people within it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone and I really enjoy it. I enjoy being competitive and improving myself. It’s given me the confidence to go to the gym.” – Sam A Parent’s Perspective: Sam’s progress hasn’t just been physical, it’s been life- changing. His mum has seen first-hand the impact wheelchair rugby has had on his health, confidence, and independence: “Wheelchair rugby has had a huge positive impact on Sam’s physical and mental well-being. It has helped him lose a huge amount of weight and strengthen his core. I can’t stress enough how much it’s helped his mental health. His resilience has improved, his mood has lifted, and it gives him a place where he feels he belongs. Sam enjoys all aspects of wheelchair rugby, from the team atmosphere to the socials. When he first started, he was shy, and I would attend the sessions with him. Now he goes independently and looks forward to both training and the social side. The encouragement he gets from everyone involved is amazing and has had such a positive influence on him, and our whole family. We are so thankful for these sessions and feel very lucky to have them locally.”* – Sam’s Mum

Why Wheelchair Rugby Matters: Sam’s story is just one example of how sport can transform lives. The Wareing Buildings and J&M Cars Wheelchair rugby at AKS is more than just a game — it’s a chance to: • Build confidence and resilience • Improve physical and mental well-being • Develop social skills and friendships • Belong to a supportive community Most importantly, it’s inclusive, open to everyone, regardless of experience, ability, or background. Get Involved: The Fylde Rugby Community Foundation runs free weekly wheelchair rugby sessions at AKS Lytham St Annes, open to all. Whether you’re looking to try something new, get active, or just meet people in a welcoming environment, you’ll find a place here. As Sam says: “I would definitely recommend it to anyone.” If you’d like to join us or learn more about the programme, visit our website or get in touch today. WEEK FIVE IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE 2 (NORTH)

Elsewhere, Darlington Mowden Park (3rd) made it three consecutive victories, battling past Otley (10th) 33–27 in the face of Storm Amy. And at the other end of the table, Scunthorpe (14th) once again impressed early on but remain without a win after Hull Ionians (6th) overturned an 18–5 deficit to triumph 24–18 while Wharfedale (7th) kept their winning run going, recording back-to-back successes thanks to a 33–15 victory over Sheffield Tigers (13th).

Here’s a roundup of Week 5 in N2(North) courtesy of the National League.

Hull (11th) registered their first win of the campaign, defeating Billingham 33–24 at the Ferrens Ground. Signs of improvement may have been seen in recent outings against Preston Grasshoppers and Fylde, but Dec Cusack’s side finally made their breakthrough. Despite receiving four yellow cards in the second half, tries from Harry Pinder, Jack Render, and Harry Gunn-Mclean secured a hard-fought victory. The Yorkshire outfit have been hampered by injuries so far this season, but this result may just spark their campaign. At the top of National Two North, there were no slips from the front-runners as both Sheffield (1st) and Tynedale (2nd) maintained their perfect records, each making it five wins from five. The league leaders ran in six tries in a 40–10 victory over Preston Grasshoppers (9th), while Tyne went one better, crossing seven times to overcome Rossendale (8th) 46–26. Cameron Grant was once again excellent with the boot despite the tricky weather conditions. That leaves just three unbeaten teams in the division after Fylde (4th) edged out Macclesfield (5th) 21-19 to end the hosts’ winning start. Lewis Quinn’s converted try eight minutes from time proved decisive, and Fylde’s demanding but exciting October continues next week when they welcome table-toppers Sheffield to Woodlands.

THE CLUB’S NEW OFFICERS

At a Special General Meeting on Tuesday, 1st April, two new officers of the Club were elected. NEIL RILEY takes over the role of Honorary Secretary and MARK WINDOWS as Interim Treasurer, replacing, respectively, Gary Melling and Andy Cleasby. Neil officially takes the natural step from successful Mini/Junior Secretary, seeing the section successfully grow from 350 players to now over 500+, as well as the introduction of North West Roses Junior Girls team. “I’m really excited to take on this role within the club that I truly love being a part of. From my eldest son Jack who came through our own Mini-Junior ranks to now playing with Halbro North West Teams, Harry, who previously played for Fylde Colts, to my youngest Thomas who now plays an active role in our mighty U10’s. Not forgetting, of course, my amazing (and very tolerant!) wife Kerry who has transformed & operates our Club Shop… The sport & this club have played a huge role in both mine & my family’s lives for many years & I’m extremely proud and honoured to play a small part in Fylde’s huge, iconic history” Club President Anthony Hoskisson said: “As a club we would like to welcome Neil into the role & also thank Mr Gary Melling for all

his hard work & dedication during his tenure as Club Secretary - as well as his ongoing support as he continues his role as U14’s Team Manager. Many thanks too to Andy Cleasby who has worked hard as Hon Treasurer and a welcome to Mark Windows who has agreed to take over on an interim basis.”

PREVIEW BIG MATCH FYLDE V SHEFFIELD RUFC

We are delighted to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Sheffield RUFC to the Woodlands today (ko 15.00), a meeting of the 4th and top placed team in National 2 (North). Our visitors had a splendid season in 2024-25 and have carried that form on in the initial weeks of the new season. Sheffield had a golden period last season putting together a run of 17 wins and just one defeat between Sept 2024 and Feb 2025, a fantastic achievement. They finished 3rd behind Rotherham and Leeds in 2023-24,2nd behind Leeds last season and their momentum suggests that they may well push on to the championship title when we reach April. They have beaten They will certainly test Fylde to the limits. Two very competitive squads should provide a fine spectacle in, hopefully, dry conditions made for running rugby. The attendance figures at the three home games at the Woodlands to date this season have been a tad disappointing so this is an opportunity for the rugby loving people on the Fylde Coast and more widely in the Lancashire environs to get to see excellent rugby in a great environment. Sheffield return to the Woodlands for only the fourth time in 30 years. There were regular fixtures between the clubs from the mid- 1970s season up until 1995, most often at level three in the RFU league system, then called National League Three. Fylde’s return to Sheffield’s well established multi-sport base in Abbeydale Park in November 2022, 29 years later, restored the friendly rivalry. Recent seasons have seen Sheffield competing in Northern regional leagues, most frequently at level five, in the North and Midlands Premier Divisions. Their promotion from Midlands Premier after finishing in 2nd place in 2021-22 via a play-off brought the clubs

facing each other once again in Nat Two (North) in 2022-23.

Sheffield’s promotion also brought them once again into direct competition with their local city rivals Sheffield Tigers. Both are located in the beautiful south west of the city, a few miles apart.

Matches between Fylde and Sheffield began in the 1970s and since Merit Table & league matches there were 15 in all up to 1995. Fylde shade the bragging rights by 11-10 but they will be mindful of the two defeats last season. Sheffield’s Head Coach since late 2021 is the very experienced former fly-half Anthony Posa whose son has succeeded him as number 10 in the current squad. New Zealand-born Posa, with a Croatian family background, has been a mainstay of the Croatian National squad and earned more than 50 international caps. He is also director of rugby at the University of Sheffield, previously set up the Doncaster Knights Academy and earned four promotions in four years while in charge of Beverley. Their most high profile signing ahead of the 2022-23 season was the accomplished and powerful backrower, Ryan Burrows, who had very senior experience at Rotherham Titans, Leeds Tykes, Newcastle Falcons (including Premiership appearances) and Coventry. The durable and indefatigable no 8 missed very few games in three seasons. Week in, week out, Ryan was one of the leading forwards in N2(North). He had another storming campaign last season and notched 14 tries. He left the Club for other pastures this season but has been replaced by another fine, powerful and very experienced no 8, Zak Poole, who has joined from Rotherham Titans. Top points scorer in recent seasons has been the outstanding scrum-half Elliot Fisher who is once again making his presence felt in N2N. He’s scored five tries, is partnered at halfback with Callum Posa, and with goal kicking responsibilities has 35 points in all. The startling form of winger Christian Hooper who has already run up 9 tries will be another serious challenge to the Fylde defence. Sheffield’s pack is extremely strong led by lock and Forwards Coach Dominic Parsons, formerly with Championship experience at Doncaster Knights, and props include Jake Hicklin and Ben Whitney, and Archie Crapper, brother Felix and Matt Adcock in the backrow. Another important acquisition for this season has been influential flanker Josh Redfern, ex-Macclesfield and Sheffield Tigers. Fylde will be checking out the fitness of players such as skipper Toby Harrison, prop Peter Altham, lock Mike Walton and utility back Alex Clayton.

LASTTIMEOUT: FYLDE TAKE AWAY BIG MAC WIN

Macclesfield 19 v Fylde 21: report by Simon Taylor

replaced, youngster Max Senior offered a big chunk of game time to make an impression, which he immediately did with a good line out steal. Fylde knew a single score was unlikely to be enough playing with the elements and were able to forge further ahead on 30 minutes. A Macc line-out went astray and scrum half Gabe Maguire sniped up to near the Macc line, and with the home defence unable to organise in time, Sam Parker showed his eye for the prize by sneaking over under the posts for his and Fylde’s second try. Will Hunt took over kicking duties and knocked over the conversion to make it 14-0. Macc, with former Fylde favourite Steve Burnage as Chairman of Rugby, are hardworking, disciplined and well organised and they worked up the pitch again and forced a scrum on Fylde’s 22. The initial phases of attack were defended well but Macc stayed patient until left winger Manu Shute found enough of a gap to touch down for an unconverted try on 37 minutes, reward for their hard work into the wind. Fylde’s kick off went dead; they then conceded a scrum penalty and Macc worked into the 22 for a last chance to reduce the deficit before the break. However, line out throwing was difficult in the conditions and another one went astray, meaning Fylde took their 14-5 lead into the break. The lead looked slender given the conditions, and Fylde knew stout defence and good game management would be needed as they now turned around to play into the wind. However, this game plan went awry immediately when the re-start was knocked on by Fylde and picked up by a player in front, giving Macc a penalty. They kicked this to touch 5 out, set up the catch and drive, and rumbled towards the line. The drive was halted illegally, the referee ran under the posts for the penalty try and was duty bound to dish out the first yellow of the day, Corey Bowker the man picked out. With nearly 40 minutes to defend into the teeth of a gale, Fylde now had only a 14-12 lead and were a man down for 10 minutes.

A 73rd minute Lewis Quinn try, nervelessly converted by Will Hunt, secured a narrow victory for Fylde, who preserved their unbeaten start to the season, and spoiled Macclesfield’s 100% start at the same time. Fylde showed great character to overcome missing players, a string of penalties, notably in the scrum, 2 yellow cards to none, and battled into a strong wind to secure the winning score after losing the lead. Storm Amy was battering the Fylde coast as the squad, minus at least eight regulars through injury, suspension or unavailability, travelled over to the picturesque setting of Priory Park to take on Macclesfield for the first time in 6 years. A strong wind straight down the park was behind Fylde’s back as they kicked off, talisman Dave Fairbrother leading the team again in the absence of Toby Harrison. Fylde started quickly after Macclesfield had cleared to touch from the kick off. The line-out catch and drive was set up only for hooker Sam Parker to catch the home defence cold by peeling off early and touching down. Danny Cassidy converted and within 2 minutes Fylde were 7-0 up. An early sign of things to come came in the second scrum of the day when Fylde popped up under pressure and conceded a penalty. Macc full back Dan Leake then made their first meaningful break of the day only to knock on in the tackle. The pattern of play for the day was set, as the team playing into the wind, Macc in the first half, sought to keep the ball and work up field, knowing any lost ball would likely be hoofed downfield with the aid of the 40-mph wind. Fylde were at times guilty of being too impatient when they didn’t have the ball, leading to a high penalty count, and Macc’s knock on errors were not being punished as the Fylde scrum was under too much pressure, either having to get ball out very quickly while on the back foot, or conceding penalties. A great turnover penalty by Sam Stott did lead to the chance to stretch the lead on 13 minutes but Cassidy’s attempt drifted wide. The arm wrestle continued until an easier penalty attempt was offered on 27 minutes but once again Cassidy’s radar was off target. To make matters worse, Mike Walton was injured in the lead up to the penalty, and he had to be

Fylde knuckled down and worked very hard to repel Macc and keep the ball when they got it. More scrum penalties helped Macc put Fylde under the cosh, but Fylde’s defence held firm with Will Greenwood and Max Senior pinching line-out ball at key pressure points to halt Macc’s flow. Fylde still tried to play their wide game when they could and one neat move on the blind with a couple of chips over the top by Will Hunt caused danger before a knock on ended the move. Macc were booting ball deep when needed but the Fylde back three of Jordan Dorrington, Ben Turner and Leo Gilliland coped with everything well to return from deep and allow their pack to get behind the ball. Young Rob King being the sole prop on the bench had joined the fray before half time and whilst the scrums were difficult, he put himself about as a tireless ball carrier, getting over the gain line consistently and making sure the ball was recycled well. On 64 minutes Fylde were again reduced to 14 men when Danny Cassidy was sent to the bin for not retreating 10 at a tap and go penalty. Macc set up another line out in the red zone following a further penalty. The line out was defended well but Macc recycled quickly and created just enough space for the other Shute brother on the opposite wing, Samson, and he squeezed in at the corner for the go ahead try. One of the second set of brothers in Macc’s line up, centre Harry Oliver’s excellent touchline conversion made it 19-14, giving Macc the lead for the first time and meaning Fylde would need more than a penalty or drop goal to get anything from the game. Fylde did not let their heads drop and skipper Dave Fairbrother galvanised his troops for one last effort. The front row with their supporting members in the pack made sure the scrums were solid for the last 10 minutes and Gabe Maguire and the back row harried and hassled the Macc scrum half to force mistakes. Fylde were awarded a penalty for a high shot, secured line out ball and set up shop in Macc’s 22. There followed the most concerted period of Fylde possession your reporter has seen, 15 to 20 phases of players driving closer to the Macc line. King,

Fairbrother, Bowker, Ashcroft and Stott were to the fore with repeated carries until the dam broke, Lewis Quinn’s final muscular carry seeing him crash over. 19 apiece would have perhaps been a fair scoreline, but Will Hunt was having none of that and he defied the wind and the angle to slot the game winning conversion beautifully. 6 minutes of nerve-jangling defence followed until one last penalty saw Fylde exit their half for the last time and see out time. This was a game that could have gone either way, but Fylde will gladly take the excellent away win, their fourth victory on the trot after the opening day draw. They sit 4th on 20 points and having beaten one of the 3 teams with 100% records they have the opportunity to beat the other 2, Sheffield and Tynedale, in their next two home games, with a trip to new boys Scunthorpe sandwiched in between. The attritional nature of the league is already showing so that will be a tough task, Fylde will hope Mike Walton’s injury was not serious. The depth of the squad is being tested and youngsters like Greenwood, Senior and Sutcliffe are showing they are up for the challenge, ably supported by the established players and veteran evergreens. Macc named Quinn man of the match, but this was very much a team effort, everyone playing their part in a fine win, with skipper Dave Fairbrother leading by example admirably. Joint head coach Chris Briers said: “This was a difficult game in tough conditions. We got off to a flying start then Macc made things very difficult for us, and we didn’t come away from their 22 with as many points as we could have done. The second half was better in terms of looking after the ball, especially when we kept it for multiple phases to get back in front and then see the game out into a strong wind. The grit and determination of the whole squad showed their character and it was really pleasing to see.” Fylde: Dorrington J, Turner (Trippier 45/Turner 52), Cassidy, Stott, Gilliland, Hunt, Maguire, Fairbrother (Captain), Ashcroft (Sutcliffe 74), Walton M (Senior 28), Greenwood, Trippier (King 32), Parker, Bowker. FYLDE RUGBY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: ELITE DEVELOPMENT DAY SENIORTEAMSFIXTURES & RESULTS 2024-25 FOCUS ON FYLDE VANDALS PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS 3RD XV 10: 27

In all honesty, this was a bit of a weird one. What should have probably been a local derby match, this was anything but.

Let’s first rewind the clock a little bit to say that the last time Fylde and Preston had third teams in the same league together, which was back in 2022-23. Fylde have since unceremoniously dropped to only having three teams, whereas our neighbours a Preston were still putting out five teams on a weekly basis up to recently. Now there are many reasons why I wanted to mention this, but primarily it was to highlight that although the Fylde 3rd team went 17 games unbeaten to win the league and cup double against a strong Hoppers outfit (many will claim that the in affectionately known Sarries side were galvanised by wider league sanctions which included points deductions in the same season), they were disbanded the following year by their own club which safe to say caused a bit of uproar throughout the ranks. So fast forwarding to the 2024-25 rugby season, with our double winning Saracens team now disbanded, we now had an abundance of players available to play for the Hawks, and of course for the Vandals - previously regarded as being the main social team in the club (for good reason too!). With the like of Jamie Griffin returning to the club to take up the mantel of captain, The Mighty Vandals took top spot for the season long duel with Blackburn 3rds (still surprised that they haven’t been included into our current league) and got promoted.

might say!). With the wind* to our backs, we started to make inroads into the opposition half. *It wasn’t just any wind, it was an M&S gold standard kind of wind. But in some kind of weird way, the pitch was absolutely sound footing wise. Special mention goes to Oliver Smith who stepped into tighthead for the game, who hadn’t propped since high school I think. Not only was he literally coming up head-to-head against an experienced prop in Olly Parkinson, he did amazingly well to make sure that the travelling team not only won all of their own scrums, but never got penalised throughout (which could have been debated, and largely was through the vociferous Hoppers front row). In short, with the strong wind to their backs, the away side dominated the first half exchanges. Classy centre and all-round nice guy, Connor Wood powered over for the first try of the contest, which was duly converted by sharpshooter Stephan ‘Shooter McGavin’ Kuhn. 0-7. The away teams lead was extended by who I’m guessing was Jon Green, to put a further 5-points between the sides. Only to go and get sinbinned a short time later. True to form, we had another man in the bin a short time later.

The shorter way of condensing all that spiel is to say that there were 2 leagues between our sides last season, and following contrasting relegation and promotion journeys by both sides, they were now placed on a level footing. Anyways, as I must be in the double digits of pints right now, I need to really start to get back on track and tell whoever reads this tripe how the game actually went. If my intentions have gone to plan, then people will understand that both clubs have had their recent wobbles but are still fighting on essentially. In the midst of the warmup, the Fylde squad lost James Shephard in the second row, due to agitating a recent rib injury in the warm- up. This allowed travelling reserve (god that sounds patronising) Rob Webster, who is honestly more versatile than a Swiss army knife, to come into the squad, with Cameron McDonald taking a starting berth. The home side won the coin toss, and drawing massively concocted conclusions here, but being inspired by the amazing work of the Foreball picks by Luke Donald, captain of the European Ryder Cup team, in the previous week, chose to go all out and pick to receive kick-off and play in to the wind for the first half. Fair enough.

*INSERT HALF TIME WHISTLE AND SUBSEQUENT RESTART HERE*

Things were going from ‘grand’ to ‘not so grand’ quite quickly. Hoppers capitalised in a brief spell which saw both teams exchange tries (bit of a spoiler perhaps).

With Tom Hodgkins running amok in the midfield and now setting up tries for fun, Connor Wood crashed over for yet another try.

But in any case, after another try scored out near the right-hand corner flag, the home side squeezed in for another score, to make it 10-17, the game was still in the balance.

After not showing the pressure of carrying the flag of being the sponsored player of the week, Stephan Kuhn, powered over to again extend the tight margin for the away team. 30
