He was recently released and intends to devote his life to the Lord’s service. His description o f conditions along religious lines in the prisons, w ill be an eye-opener fo r many. are in effect and have been for years in both State and Federal institu­ tions. It would surprise most people to know how crooks are coddled, and how carefully prison guards must han­ dle these convicted violators of law. Every form of corporal punishment has been abolished; the striped suit, the shaved head, the lock-steps are all relics of an age that has passed; and even harsh words toward prisoners are forbidden. The old system has gone in many prisons and is “ going” in many more. It was a failure— let that be said with emphasis— and there are none to mourn its departure. But, what of the new? Prisoners can now talk in the dining room or on the range; they are shaved twice a week in a shop as modern in appoint­ ments as many on the outside; mail— both letters and papers— is delivered promptly every night to the inmate in his cell; baseball teams and vaudeville troupes are recruited within the prison to entertain the men; and movies are as regular as Saturdays and Sundays.
