149 in prayer and communion with the Father, and then go out on the trail to tell the pilgrims of our God who is mighty to save. In this connection, just let me pass on to you the testi mony of one man at one of the Sunday evening testimony meetings. He said: “ Eight years ago, I came to Nan Yoh as a pilgrim. No, it was not I, but a child of the Devil, that came to worship those awful idols. Some man handed me a little booklet, ‘Selected portions of the Holy Scriptures.’ I took it, read it, studied it, and in it found the true God, the God who really answers prayer, and the Saviour of the world. My purpose in being at this Conference is three-fold. First, to thank the man who gave me' that booklet. I do not know who he was, but I want to thank him publicly anyway. Second, I have come to repre sent my church, of which I am an elder; and, third, I came to take one more look at those terrible idols that I used to bow down to and worship.” This is but one of many splendid testimonies that were given which bear witness of the fruitfulness of the Nan Yoh Con ference. Eternity alone will tell of the wonderful work that has been ac complished at this place, which has come to mean so much in the lives of not only those who have been brought to a knowledge of the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ, but also those whose Christian lives have been deep ened and strengthened with the spirit ual atmosphere that permeates the place. The Grand Farewell. It was necessary for some of us to leave a week before the Conference had closed in order for Dr. Torrey to ar rive in Shanghai in time for his boat, and for Mr. Steven and myself to be in Nanking in time for the opening of the Language School. As Dr. Keller started out the gate with us, he said: “We may meet some of the delegates around the path a little way, because some of them said they wanted to tell you goodbye.” When we rounded a small hill a short distance from the house and looked out across the rice fields, we .saw a sight that was surely an expression of the love and appreciation that the Chinese feel for one who has helped them. I refer especially to Dr. Torrey and Mr. Dreyer, for they had been with them for two weeks, and every delegate had come to love them devotedly. It was a fare privilege and ho less touching
THE K I N G ’ S BUS I NE S S votion to our Lord Jesus Christ who has done so much for us! As we made our way slowly up this sacred mountain, it was pathetic to see the pilgrims stop and worship at the various temples all along the way, each temple represent ing a different god that would supply different needs. Oh, how their hearts cry out for peace and comfort, but they cry in vain! In one case, we saw the pilgrims rubbing coins on the eyes of a huge stone dragon. They take these coins home, and sew them on their chil dren’s caps to keep evil spirits away, and to assure their good health. As I stood up on this mountain which af fords one of the most magnificent views I ever saw, my heart was filled with an inexpressible joy, and just as great a degree of sorrow— joy over the wonder ful things God has wrought in nature, and for the privilege of serving Him in China, and sorrow when I looked at these millions of souls and realized that they were hurrying out into eternity by thousands every day without ever hearing of my Christ. This day spent on the mountain was the rest day for the workers, and at was indeed a profit able day for all who were privileged to go, for it gave us some idea of the vast opportunity of service among the thou sands of pilgrims that come to this place annually to worship. Tlie Bible Conference. The next day, the Conference was a- gain in session, and oh, the joy to see that -splendid company of men feasting upon God’s Word as they were taught by the splendid corps of speakers and teachers of the Conference. It was feared that the Conference would be very small this year on account of the critical military situation, but again God poured out blessings above all we: could ask or think,, and the attendance broke all previous records— a total reg istration of 303 native workers. I never saw or felt a sweeter spirit of Christian atmosphere in any conference or con vention in my life than prevailed at this Conference. My heart was deeply stirred as I walked by the various rooms after classes and between lectures, and saw groups of anywhere from two to a dozen men on their knees pouring out their hearts to God, and pleading for victory over sin in their own lives, and for God’s blessing upon the Conference. The Lord Jesus Christ is so very real to them, that they want others to know Him also, so many of them spend a time
