SCIENCE AND THE BIBLE by Bolton Davidheiser Chairman, Science Division Biola College

Th e Sacred Cow

W hy were animals first domesti cated? The most obvious an swer probably would be so that they would be more easily available as a source of food. But scientists now say that this was not the case and sithat domestication was started for re- y iig iou s purposes. Furthermore, it is ' said thatjjikely cattle were the first animals to be domesticated. It is sug gested that the reason for this is be cause the horns of wild cattle resem bled the shape of the crescent moon and this made bovines particularly suitable as sacrifices to the moon-god dess. Concerning the first domesticated animals, we learn from the Bible that Abel kept sheep, not cattle. Although details are not given, there are several reasons for believing that their keep was associated with clothing rather than food. Scientists who are not Christians disregard this account but Christians cannot. Our Lord referred to Abel as a real person and so did Paul. In a recent article on this subject in a scientific journal, the author ad mits that the conclusion reached by scientists is hypothetical and conjec tural. Although Scripture does not give us a great deal of information, there are clues from which we may draw conclusions more substantial than the conjectures of the scientists. Before the birth of Cain and Abel, sin had entered into the world through disobedience. Also a prophetic state ment had been made about the com ing Redeemer. We may not be cer tain how well Eve understood this prophecy, but when Cain was bom into the world as the first child, she made a statement which some inter pret to mean that she not only under stood, but even had a hope that this child would fulfill the prophecy. It is said that, “ I have gotten a man from the Lord,” is not a correct trans lation. “With the help of the Lord,” is said to be possible but it involves an unusual use of a Hebrew word. The literal translation is said to be, “ I have gotten a man, even Jehovah.” It is easy to see why this rendering would be avoided by translators un less it was quite apparent that Ev«

was expressing a false hope that this child was indeed the promised Re deemer. Cain was a tiller of the ground and he brought vegetable matter as a sac rifice to the Lord. Abel brought from his flock. This may seem natural and appropriate, but God respected Abel’s offering and not Cain’s. Some find evidence in the original language, as well as in Paul’s use of the plural, “ gifts,” in connection with Abel’s of fering, that Abel also brought the products of plants in addition to sheep from his flock. A bloodless sacrifice expressed thanksgiving while the oth er was a confession of sin and an ex pression of faith in God’s provision for atonement. “Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.” But the word here translated sin also means a sin-offering. If he recognized his need as a sinner, a suitable offer ing for sin was close at hand and there was no excuse for him to neglect the opportunity of utilizing it. Here we see that the first two hu man beings bom on earth represent in type the most profound difference which exists to the present day be tween people who desire to serve God. There is no longer any need for ani mal sacrifice for the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, has come and has shed His blood in atonement. Those who apply this sacrifice as the atonement for their sins are accepted by God, as was Abel. But today there are many who rebel against this, as Cain did, and refuse to accept the way God has pro vided. They intend that the good things they accomplish, some perhaps through much personal sacrifice, will make them acceptable to God. These things they should do because of thankfulness to God, as the offering of plant products brought by Cain. But this by itself is not acceptable. The only way is to acknowledge that nothing which we can do is enough to save us and to accept the atonement made by Christ for our sins. “ How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation?” With the expanding science program at Biola, botany is now being offered. A gift of a greenhouse would be much appreci ated.
