Scott Allen loves his snowmobiles. Even an old snowmobile is a good snowmobile and that’s why he founded the Annual Old Snowmobile Rally as part of Champlain Township’s annual Winter Carnival. “I started it eight years ago,” Allen said, during an interview while he tinkered with the engine of one old snow machine. “I’d bought a few old ones but there’s nowhere really to ride them on the organized trails.” Allen explained that the cost to licence a snowmobile for rides out on public trails, along with the cost for vehicle insurance, a trail pass and any other paperwork neces- sary, adds up to about $400 for onemachine. He has 10 or 11 in his collection of old and antique snowmobiles, plus his more-mo- dern 2006 Grand Tour Bombardier, so it doesn’t make much sense to pay a huge amount for insurance and licensing for all of them every season unless he intends to ride each and every one of them. Other snowmobile enthusiasts who enjoy collecting and keeping older machines have the same problem. They’d all like to ride themnow and then but the cost for just one day’s ride is prohibitive. Which is how the Old Snowmobile Rally began, and has grown in popularity over the past eight years. Allen had 20machines and riders show up for the first rally eight years ago. Last year there were 140, and most of

Old snowmobile fans are everywhere. The riders in the ChamplainWinter Carnival event travel from as far as Val d’Or, Québec or Cornwall, Ontario and as near as Scott’s neighbours down the road in L’Orignal. Come the morning of February 4, eve- ryone will ride out from the Vankleek Hill Fair Grounds, following a marked trail for a 35-kilometre round trip across several snow- covered fields and pastures for which local farmers are allowing access. Some of those farmers will be among the trail riders. At the end of the day there will be prizes for the Oldest Snowmobile, the Best Looking, the Oldest Rider, and even the Toughest Snowmobile on the trail.
