T hey tell me not very many Mexicans turn out to be All- American football players. I guess it’s because of our size. But down in Calexico where I grew up I never heard about this and I played football to win. The last three years of high school I made All-Valley and then I came to UCLA and this last year we were undefeated and rated the number one team in the nation. I guess you can’t help be ing noticed for All-American hon ors with a great team like UCI.A behind you. I’m only 5' 914" and weigh 175. I’m not a fast runner but they tell me I’m quick on the breakaway and that seems to do the trick. This fall I’m scheduled to play pro ball with the Vancouver Lions. A lot of people have asked me how it feels to be a football hero. And I tell them that the really thrilling thing in my life is being a Christian. I’m a minister’s son (I have 11 brothers and sisters) and I always took it for granted that I was a Christian. I think the thing that brought me to Christ was the living testimony of many of my team mates at UCLA. It wasn’t what they said but it was how they lived. Last fall I received Christ as my own personal Saviour and recently my wife Orzina also became a Christian. I know I’m a better football player now that Christ is with me and I have a feeling that I’ll be able to do a better job of whatever lies ahead because as the Bible says, “ I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
