GREECE- LAND OF SORROW AND TEARS Rev. Douglas G. Stewart, F.R.G.S.

In a former army jeep I travelled along the ever-winding dange r ous mountain roads o f Greece. What my eyes did see brought forcefully home to me that Greece has been called the land o f sorrow and tears. I visited the devastated earthquake areas, and I heard from the lips o f the stricken people, o f the terror and trag edy that had invaded their homes. I saw village after village reduced to dust, rubble, and ruin. Even as I approached one town, violent tremors began to shake the ground, and cracks zig-zagged their way across the scarred surface o f the earth. In one village I met a young Greek mother who had just given birth to twins. Their birth had been pre mature as the young mother had suf fered severe shock during the earth quake. Throughout the entire 1,500 miles I travelled in Greece, I was deeply con scious o f the great physical and spir itual need o f the Greek people, especial ly the children. I was informed that there are 400,000 orphans in Greece, many o f whom have been affected by the horrors o f war, famine, earthquakes, and death. In Northern Greece I met two boys, both orphans. The father o f one had killed the father o f the other in the Greek Civil War. The father who re mained alive was later killed in the same war. In spite o f the tragedy, the boys remained the best o f friends. Once again this is the story o f Greece — the story of sorrow and tears. The story o f another Greek orphan is typical o f many. His father had been a poor Greek peasant. At times he had been heard to exclaim, "I would rather die a thousand deaths than see my child suffer.” When the Communists attacked from the North, the father died on the snow-covered mountains of

vided for and taught the message o f Him who said, "Suffer the little chil dren to come unto me for o f such is the Kingdom o f Heaven.” The European Evangelistic Crusade recognizes the overwhelming need o f the children o f Greece. It is our plan and purpose this summer to help send several hundreds o f these underpriv ileged, neglected boys and girls to a Christian Summer Camp. In this camp children who have suffered so much physically will be given a wonderful change from their otherwise drab sur roundings. Not only will they be prop erly fed and taken care of, but above all they will be taught the love o f God as revealed in Jesus Christ. This Summer Camp can only become a reality in the lives o f these children through the faithful assistance o f God’s people. W e cannot do it without your prayers and support. Here is your op portunity to become both Mother and Father to some Greek child. Twenty ($20.00) dollars will enable us to send one child to summer camp for one whole month. ($5.00 a week) Would you be willing to give these children at least one chance o f happi ness and at least one opportunity to hear the message o f the Saviour’s love? W e shall be happy to hear from you. Please address all correspondence and gifts to:
