CLIPPINGS AND MUSINGS – DECEMBER EDITION - HELEN DUVAL 2018

As Christmas and the New Year are now rapidly hurtling their way towards us, most of us will be looking at organising the fun and festivities, and perhaps panicking about last minute shopping. Yes it’s that time of year again….holiday cheer, mulled wine, family visits and gifts together with an increase in crime. As sure as Mariah Carey and Michael Buble will be blasting from just about every car radio in existence, sadly we also know that crime will rise too. This time of year reminds us to focus on the security of our homes as a lot of people tend to begin stockpiling presents which will be at the forefront in the minds of many opportunistic burglars. Smart Home technology is quickly becoming popular with the ‘Internet of Things’ making home security much more reliable. Remote locking systems used in conjunction with smartphones and apps have inspired homeowners to invest and they appear to be simple and relatively cost effective solutions for smart security around the home.

Likewise, during the holidays, if travelling away, it would seem our driveways are not necessarily that secure, with cars also a target to thieves. Companies such as Advanced Keys Ltd, have introduced products to help combat car theft, being a global supplier to the trade of car keys, fobs, remotes and transponders. TDB1000 key programmer is the very latest in modern technology and is offered by the company without the need for tokens or subscriptions to be purchased. Based in Birmingham, the company offers a comprehensive range of automotive products all of which complement the huge range of key programming systems and antitheft devices available.

GETTING SMART AT CHRISTMAS

As innovations in smart security continue to be developed to combat home burglaries, these types of systems offer a level of personal control that are providing enormous peace of mind. A typical entry level solution might include a couple of door and window sensors as well as a motion detector that link to an integrated hub. All of these then communicate with the WiFi system which can be

2

E D I T I O N 6

Incredibly, computers are not the main target but information on them could be, as this can be used to steal identities or even blackmail the owners. Leaving tools in sheds or garages is also another risk factor that could leave a home susceptible to a breakin. Small things like remembering to switch on alarm systems or installing windows with integral blinds such as those in the Morley Glass range, which help to maintain privacy will prove invaluable investments. Being the last Clippings and Musings of 2018, I wanted to just take the opportunity to remind you that once again Lee, Jason and the team will be wrapping presents for children who are unfortunate enough to be in hospital this year. If you feel you would like to contribute or give a little support and encouragement to everyone then do contact Lee he does such an excellent job of bringing a little Christmas cheer to the children, their families and the nursing staff. Looking towards 2019, we have some great creative projects underway which we are already working on with customers. As we look at expanding services even further, the entire team would like to send you a special greeting at Christmas to express our sincere appreciation and thanks for the support. CHRISTMAS WISHES

connected to an app or smartphone. The entire system can be expanded to give greater security options with lights, sirens and outdoor surveillance options all possible to include if desired. For those with more limited finances then the iCloud storage option makes a more cost effective storage solution. Being able to personalise a system where specific rules can be created to ensure the components work together seamlessly is a very appealing option. Whether it’s camera surveillance or a comprehensive home security system that doubles as a home automation system this is a growing business sector for installers. With companies such as Solidor, Distinction Doors and Yale, amongst others, all working hard to help lower the crime rate, with some top quality security products protecting our ‘castles’, there are still those who will seize an opportunity if there are vulnerabilities. Many reformed burglars have given words of advice on remembering the simple things. Thieves don’t want to get caught but they are happy to assess. This is where elderly relatives could be vulnerable if they haven’t had their window and door locks checked. Also, with many people at work during the day, this seems to be the preferred time to try to break into someone’s home. If the front of a house does have potential weaknesses then the back of a property will generally be even weaker. Making sure there are no giveaway signs for them to return should be a priority. Leaving keys on hooks that are visible will mean that it will be only a matter of time before another attempt to break in will occur. Calendars that can be seen from the window will also tell a burglar when it will be all clear to come back knowing they won’t be disturbed. NOTICE THE SMALL THINGS

Hoping everyone has a very happy and healthy Christmas and of course, a very prosperous 2019.

A CHARITABLE CHRISTMAS

Christmas is a wonderful time of year, and for most of us it generally can’t come around soon enough. There’s so much to enjoy from the family get togethers, to the carols, the laughter and the general anticipation of the whole event. Even the big retailers tv adverts have become part of the build up to Christmas celebrations now. The whole season is a heart-warming time, with another increasingly obligatory part of business at Christmas being the tieins to good causes. Yes, Kevin the carrot is back while John Lewis has brought in the big guns with Elton John reminding us to ‘Step Into Christmas’. No doubt, in buying from all the retailers who make such a concerted effort to market the event, we will all be supporting some incredibly worthy causes. The following that these adverts and the associated charities they support, has gained a huge amount of interest and followers over recent years. For some, however, it is not quite the cheery time as many of our national charities remind us at this time of year. It's wonderful to see charity donations being tied into marketing campaigns but perhaps it would be good to reinforce the chosen cause throughout the year with an equal amount of marketing budget rather than one lump sum at the end of it? It does show that people are expecting us to give something back at this time of year. Of course, for the large Charities this type of continual marketing push will help to sustain their very worthy causes and much

needed financial support. Turning to those who work during Christmas in hospitals and hospices, it gives us a lot to reflect on, particularly for those with family members who may have to remain in care for the duration of the festive time. With this in mind, Lee, Jason and the team have been hard-working Christmas elves again this year in order to make life a little easier to bear for those with sick relatives. For children and their families it can be overwhelmingly difficult to cope as they recognise their friends and other families will be celebrating Christmas in more traditional ways together. So with that in mind this year sees another Children’s charity that will be receiving a personal visit from the NFA Santa Support team, with some very generous donations made by business leaders in the glass and glazing sector. Everyone would like to say a huge thank you to all those who have contributed to this year’s Christmas cause.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas!

CHRISTMAS CHEER FROM THE NFA TEAM

What an incredible year 2018 has been the NFAs have once again left an indelible mark that reflects the high standards and quality assurances now synonymous with this industry. Christmas and the New Year are fast approaching and we can look back at a very good year with very positive reviews of all we have achieved as publishers and online news reporting. Most us are looking to focus on our families and the joy that comes from spending time with those we love at this time of year. It is now when we all want to take a couple of weeks to embrace the holiday season, take a deep breath and also take stock of all we would like to see happen next year.

For business owners it is also the time of year when they get chance to clear their heads, and their diaries, as they sit down to focus on reinvigorating the market for another business year ahead. For the NFA team, we all feel exceptionally grateful and fortunate to be part of a business sector that takes a positive and professional approach to industry by promoting the best in innovation and new direction. Reflecting on another year passing so quickly we have been lucky to be able to catch up with so many people and see the positive results they have achieved over the last 12 months. Our magazines, online portals and social media channels giving great support to their own marketing initiatives.

24

E D I T I O N 6

They say that some of the best work happens in your head and certainly at Christmas there is no better time to be able to switch off the technology and be inspired. Many say that some of the best ideas for future direction come at times away from the office desk and telephone. It’s considered a highly productive process by many successful business leaders and innovators. So as this year draws to a close we hope that you will all let yourselves be inspired by optimists and positive thoughts. 2019 could just be the best year yet! The entire National Fenestration Awards team would like to wish all of you a wonderful and happy Christmas as well as a very successful 2019. We look forward to sharing your news and thoughts as you help to drive the industry forward.

We can all take this time as a great opportunity to actually be able to just sit and think without too much pressure. It is a great time of year to get lost in planning and creative innovation for the sector, while looking back at the successes of the whole year. Visualising with a positive attitude and seeing things coming to fruition, makes it possible to see next year’s plans becoming realities. With the NFAs there will be new categories, and the 2018 winners event which is set to be bigger and better than ever before. Things are changing in a big way as they are growing in popularity, with business leaders recognising the merits of accolades that are fairly won. This is the best time of year for looking ahead and taking time to reflect and ensure that good head starts can be achieved at the beginning of next year. Innovation across the sector has been inspiring this year so it will be interesting to see where new developments will take us throughout 2019.

Get ready for some great new developments from the whole team in the new year!

Merry Christmas everyone!

GETTING ANIMATED WORKS WONDERS!

It is no secret that many people have looked to expand their marketing programmes by producing videos to help redefine their corporate profiles. Website links and social feeds attract huge attention when videos are uploaded with visits increasing rapidly once they are uploaded. The National Fenestration Awards is a leading news portal that many are using to help gain greater coverage with business videos and vlogs. Business people have realised that this route is now a major way to boost a marketing strategy, with online campaigns now the information channel of choice for many companies, large and small alike.

Consider how many upload videos onto their social feeds of completed installation projects, or new machinery working fast to increase output. Animations in a video really support the content and these give weight to the overall message being conveyed they are also extremely cost effective and for an explainer video they help to substantiate the main topics, quickly and effectively. Evaluating the audience for an animated marketing video is essential so that the message is conveyed in the right way. By viewing a video the audience is captive if content has been carefully structured. Rather than selling something it is better to plan how the message can be best understand and by considering a very important fact once the video has been

26

E D I T I O N 6

When you combine live action and animation together this is a clever way to build trust with a viewer while keeping them entertained with the illustrative animations. At the National Fenestration Awards the team is very familiar with video promotional work and can advise company’s on how best to strategise their communication needs. Remember every video is a key attribute to a company’s entire corporate profile. For anyone looking at the best ways to increase corporate awareness in relation to video or marketing strategies, the team can give excellent advice on increasing business potential.

watched, the viewers life has got better because of that. This establishes trust in a corporate brand as well as the key people involved which ultimately, should convince them to invest. If the content discusses features and benefits continuously, the viewers will switch off as the purpose is to give a solution. Whether downloads, purchases or making appointments are the videos purpose, ensure that the message is clear, concise and that there is a direct call to action at the end that is simple. Motion Graphic Animation quickly conveys a message through its graphics and with constant movement it is very easy to follow, making it a perfect solution to explain and clarify more complicated services or products, this is really useful if no-one will be presenting during the video. If there are presenters, ensure they know how to engage an audience.

GIVING GOOD SERVICE ALL YEAR ROUND

Whatever size business, good customer service is essential and is the lifeblood to maintain a positive recommendation from customers and keeping them happy. Sales are all well and good, but the approach to customer service is the thing that will determine whether they will come back and give referrals. No matter how many promotions or offers reducing prices that can be conjured up, unless the back up support is there, a company will not be profitable for very long. For many SMEs recommendation is the route they trust to make their business grow. Building business relationships is of course all part of the process but without the service to back this up then these won’t last long. As the saying goes, ‘actions speak louder than words’ and there are plenty out there looking to snap up customers if they spot a weak link.

For smaller businesses there are some key things that can get overlooked which will tarnish a business if they are not addressed. We’ve created a few tips to keep customers happy for tradesmen with frantic schedules who may find prioritising not always top of the list. Answer the phone. It is vital that this happens in one guise or another, so whether a phone has call forwarding or an answering service make sure it is switched on and that people have a route to resolve any queries. Making answerphone messages appealing will be an important part of leaving the right message about a company. Only make promises that can be kept. Being reliable and trustworthy as an SME is another very important part of business communications. This strengthens business relations and demonstrates that customers are important to the business.

30

E D I T I O N 6

If you set a delivery date, or appointment make sure it can be kept. Plan these things carefully as there is no quicker route to a bad reputation than broken promises. Listening is a great approach in business by paying attention during discussions ensures that customers know they are a high priority. They will also be more forgiving than having to deal with people where they have to explain things over and over again. Those added extras of being helpful when there is no profit in it for a business actually goes a long way and will always attract the right attention. By going the extra mile when occasions warrant it, without putting a cost to it, will take a tradesman way ahead. If there is a team in place, ensure that they understand how to handle customers at all levels, from managing directors to clerks and the production team. Queries and questions with genuine attention paid to any problems will again put customers in a better mood. Incentives are always draw a big crowd as well as loyalty benefits for long standing customers these make the long standing customers feel special and will give them good reason to return and refer. Gestures need not be large or dramatic, but if manufacturers add small additional extras that are needed to complete a job, then this will keep people coming back for more. These simple consistent rules will ensure that a business is recognised for its excellent customer service rather than any gimmicks to try win new sales and will take a business further forward as a new year begins.

BUSINESS BOOMS FOR THREE ATLAS INSTALLERS

Three firms have spoken of how their sales have taken off since becoming Atlas roof installers and what it means to be winners in the Atlas Installation of the Month competition. QKS Ltd, Glasshouse Ltd and Ewenny Home Improvements are the latest round of winners in the popular Installation of the Month competition and they have all seen their businesses accelerate since becoming installers of the best looking glazed roof system available on the market. QKS Ltd was one of the first firms to adopt the Atlas lantern and the business has grown by around 50% since, as owner Nick Clipston explains: “We were keen to broaden our portfolio and began looking for an ultra-slim roof lantern around five years ago. Shortly after, we became an Atlas installer because we think the Atlas lantern is the best out there. When we started, we were installing just five lanterns a year but now the number of installations has multiplied and our business has grown at a rapid rate.”

Peterborough, which features two Atlas lanterns. “We originally installed one extension, complete with Atlas roof, and the homeowner was so impressed that they decided to add another extension on the other side of their home,“ says Nick. “The Atlas roof was the only one they wanted for phase two. The completed project looks incredible and the owners are thrilled, so much so in fact that they recommended us and the Atlas roof to their parents! We love working with the Atlas lantern and we’re always proud to complete installations that then go on to win industry awards.” Becoming an Atlas installer four years ago has helped Bridgend-based Ewenny Home Improvements grow by nearly 35%. Director Andrew Edwards says: “We’ve installed almost 100 Atlas roofs now and they are always an easy sell because homeowners favour the low sightlines of the product and trust the Atlas brand name. The Atlas roof has helped my business to achieve profitable growth because there are no compromises with it – the design, performance and ease of fitting are all second to none.”

Ewenny completed an Atlas lantern installation on a new build property in Porthcawl that recently

The latest award-winning project from QKS is a double extension on a property in Nassington, near

won in the Installation of the Month competition. “We were tasked with making a light, bright kitchen diner on this property and the sleek Atlas lantern and bi-folding doors were the natural choice,” says Andrew. “The finished result is just what the client wanted and we’re delighted to win the Atlas monthly competition. Being an award winning installer shows potential customers that we only do quality installations and we always use the best products for them.” Cardiff-based Glasshouse Ltd were undaunted by the previously high standard of entries for the Installation of the Month contest and demonstrated this to full effect by winning with its very first entry. The acclaimed project showed off the team’s impressive design skills by showcasing three Atlas Flat Rooflights to flood a new kitchen/diner extension with natural light. Since becoming an Atlas installer, Glasshouse has installed nearly 200 Atlas roofs and has experienced a particularly high demand for these contemporary-style flat rooflights. Shaun Armstrong, owner of Glasshouse Ltd, says: “Architects and homeowners love the Atlas Flat Rooflight and this installation shows exactly why. The original design for this extension incorporated a mono pitched lean to style roof but we knew we

could enhance the look further by utilising a more bespoke look and therefore switched to the Atlas Flat Rooflights. We are very proud to win an award for this project, particularly as it was the first time we’d entered. This victory gives us a great head start into the New Year and we’re expecting 2019 to be really successful for us.”

To see more on the three latest winning installations, visit www.atlasroofsolutions.co.uk/installation

Every month, an installer will win a £200 John Lewis voucher and a £50 Majestic Wine voucher. There’s also trade industry PR and promotion through the Atlas website, as well as entry into the Atlas Installer of the Year award finals. All entries submitted with completed installation pictures will receive a five metre tape measure.

The all new Supalite SkyVista is the latest addition to the range, combining the Supalite roof system with glass panels and this gives Contech customers greater sales potential thanks to the improved standards it offers. With excellent self cleaning properties and unique design options this striking new product provides outstanding solar control for renovation and new build projects.

On the back of popular demand for the Contech Conservatories roofing range, Director, Gareth Jones had already opted to introduce the Atlas Flat Roofing system to give a broader choice in respect of design and performance. This striking product has proved very popular with homeowners looking to add more light and create rooms with a modern, more open feel to the roof design. For installers the simple to install, light-weight roof light has a 5 degree pitched kerb which can achieve an overall U value of 1.3 w/m2k. In addition to this, the company is the only Stoke On Trent supplier of the Virtual aluminium frame composite door, from the Virtuoso range. Aluminium remains a highly popular choice for new build projects with architects and specifiers as well as homeowners looking to modernise their properties.

Production has also been streamlined this year, having been geared up to optimise manufacturing methods in order to cope with the increase in demand for all products in the range with investment in new machinery, saw fabrication methods have been simplified and further automated. Gareth Jones comments, ‘The increasing competitive pressure on fabricators means that a revision of products and services is essential. This year has been busy and consequently has required evaluation of our core areas. Extending our product ranges and customer support services, ensures that our customers remain our top priority and will reinforce our market position in the long term. Staying ahead in a fiercely competitive

market is done with measured steps but these are always focused on tailored solutions for our customers. LINIAR AND AVANTEK GO LIVE!

The 2019 FIT Show announced its marketing theme at a recent Exhibitor Day – Everyone’s Going Live. The people in our industry have always been the stars of the FIT Show’s previous marketing campaigns, and this time around is no different – but this time, video is at the heart of the campaign. Liniar and Avantek Machinery are both big believers in the power of video – their active YouTube channels and website video pages are testament to this – so they were always going to rise to the challenge to create a video for the FIT Show. Marketing Director Sue Davenport explains how they approached the task for this particular shoot: We wanted our video to not only encourage people to visit the FIT Show but also get across how important our own people are to us as a business. Both Liniar and Avantek have a culture of people development and customer service, and we thought our video should highlight that – as well as introducing some of the wider team that work so hard to create and deliver our products

on a daily basis. “We wrote our own ‘poem’ for the video, and the team were great at getting on board with what we were trying to achieve. Even the ones who grumbled secretly enjoyed being film stars for the day!”

We think you’ll agree the results are worth it – take a look at bit.ly/GoingLive2019.

Liniar and Avantek can be found on Stand J10 at the NEC Birmingham from 21 to 23 May 2019 – register for your free ticket now at bit.ly/Liniar2019FIT.

HEGLA FURTHER STRENGTHENS CUSTOM GLASS’ LEADING MARKET POSITION

Long-term efficiency combined with tailored solutions were key aspects to HEGLA being the preferred machinery brand for market leading glass processors, Custom Glass, when investing in advanced modern system solutions. An Optimax cutting table complete with a fully automated Rapidstore system was recently installed to ensure the company could work at full capacity. Laser technology was also required to simplify the manufacturing process and to optimise the cutting equipment, with Jotika software incorporated for shaped products in the range. During 2016 and early 2017 the company’s production capacity had been analysed, and with over 30 different glass types manufactured for the glass industry it was evident that bottlenecks were being created with substantial downtime restricting manufacturing time. With demand increasing for the Custom Glass range across both commercial and domestic sectors, it was essential that production methods were simplified.

Operations Manager, Andy Vint was familiar with the HEGLA brand and that the team were customer focused, knowing they could provide the right solutions for the company’s output. After evaluating the glass machinery market HEGLA UK were invited to provide solutions that would increase productivity for the company that now produces on average 13,000 IG units per week. Initially CAD drawings were created after site visits to Custom Glass by Steve Goble and his team, which allowed the limited area in front of arrissing to be opened up. For Jeff Hooson it was clear that the HEGLA engineers were driven to provide the right equipment for the allocated space on the factory floor, without the need to move any of the other equipment. Two cutting tables were removed from site and replaced with modern equipment from HEGLA.

This second phase of investment came after the installation of a fully automatic Bystronic glass Com-fort’Line in 2016, which was purchased to cope with a more diverse product portfolio for both the commercial and domestic markets. Larger batch sizes can now be cut more quickly and a broader product range can be delivered in a considerably shorter timescale. Consequently, the new HEGLA system has further automated production methods and increased efficiency to provide consistently high quality products. Based in Liverpool, Custom Glass has gone on to develop a range of quality engineered, specialist glazed products that meet and exceed current industry standards. Occupying a 68,000 sq.ft. manufacturing facility, the company is focused on customer satisfaction and develops products according to market demands and industry regulations. The company’s ability to manufacture the best quality I.G. units with soft coat glasses and warm edge spacer as well as gas filling capabilities ensures that the range is manufactured in the most reliable and effective way.

Since installation, the large glass selection now can be fed automatically from the Rapidstore to ensure that the cutting machine is continuously fed. Faster cutting also means that the toughener can be kept well fed. With approximately 19 shuttle positions and 5 bolt positions, more racks can be added to this modular installation should customer demand and product diversity require it.

PROGRESSIVE AND RELIABLE

Custom Glass has achieved steady and consistent growth since 1982 when the company first opened its doors. Today, it is now firmly established as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of domestic glass and toughened safety glass in the North West. With more than 40 years experience in the sector, Managing Director Jeff Hooson bought Custom Glass 10 years ago, recognising the potential the company had in the marketplace. Having a product portfolio that comprises various types of coated glasses senior management knew that investment in state-of-the- art equipment that would take the company forward was vital.

EXCELLENT RESULTS

For Paul Gibbs, Sales Manager HEGLA UK bringing together the best of both Bystronic glass and HEGLA brands at Custom Glass has created a shining example of technical superiority. He comments, “This installation can be considered the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ in terms of efficiency, output and forward thinking production capabilities for Custom.” With such a substantial increase in orders and the speed of production that is now achievable has meant that the national delivery run has now expanded considerably, which means a fleet expansion is imminent. 16 commercial vehicles that include Sprinter vans up to a 40ft. arctic lorry currently ensure that Custom Glass customers will receive what they need when they need it. Steve Goble, Managing Director, HEGLA UK Ltd, “The installation of HEGLA’s Optimax and Rapidstore has really strengthened the entire production facility for Custom Glass, as the equipment provides many technical advantages that will yield a fast payback. Working alongside customers ensures that any queries they may have are immediately resolved and as we tailor solutions to meet their individual needs, guarantees that we can help them continue to grow their business as and when they need.”

The HEGLA pedigree has already had a positive impact since installation with its speed and reliability having achieved excellent results. Consequently, the relationship with the HEGLA UK team is firmly established as a partnership rather than customer/supplier. Jeff Hooson comments “It is vital with such a diverse product range that we get things right and to achieve this quickly. The Rapidstore ensures that we can store more specialist glass without down-time and this can be included without having to stop the production process. and Rapidstore systems into the factory without the need for huge disruption. Carefully planned adjustments enabled us to create internal efficiency across all production departments. The working partnership between HEGLA UK, Bystronic glass UK and Custom Glass provides us with clear advantages and we have never been let down by the engineering team since installing the equipment. In an industry that has faced some challenging times we feel morally obliged to be decent and honourable our suppliers are part of that obligation, and we consider HEGLA an exceptionally reliable business partner.” The CAD designs allowed the production department to visualise how we could incorporate the Optimax
