When Can My Child Start Orthodontic Treatment?
Parents often come to us wondering when the best time is for their children to start orthodontic treatment. Many people think that because they got braces or started orthodontic treatment as a teen or young adult that they should wait until their kids are that age to take them to an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontics actually recommends that children visit the orthodontist for their first orthodontic examination by age 7. Kids need braces for a variety of reasons. Their baby teeth may have come out too early or late, their teeth may be crowded or misplaced, their teeth could be causing a facial imbalance, and they may have trouble chewing or biting — those are just a few of the many reasons why someone may need braces. As kids’ adult teeth start to come in, many parents become worried they will definitely need braces to correct their appearance, but over time, these issues can disappear on their own. If they continue to remain crooked, or your child is experiencing any of the issues listed above, then it’s probably a good idea to visit an orthodontist. Earlier Than You Might Think
years old, we are able to evaluate their airway, bite, and oral habits. This can help us determine if the child will need braces and when they will potentially need them.
While kids can start getting braces at 7 years old, it really depends on their dental
behaviors. Braces are a big responsibility, and it can make taking care of their dental hygiene more difficult. They need to be ready for that responsibility so their orthodontic treatment can be successful. If you have questions about orthodontic treatment or are wondering if your child is ready to get braces, give our office a call. We’d be happy to schedule an evaluation to get the process started.
During that initial visit, early intervention and evaluation are important to prevent future issues from developing. When a child is around 7
