becoming part of a future landslide. Overall the probability of future occurrence within Irvine is considered occasional. Subsidence Since Irvine has not experienced acute subsidence events, it seems unlikely that subsidence will occur in the city’s future. The most likely cause of a future event would be linked to an extreme drought in the future that leads to intensified groundwater withdrawals from the groundwater aquifer. In addition, the City’s proximity to seismically active faults suggests the potential for a significant earthquake exists, which could lead to seismically induced subsidence in the future.

Climate Change Considerations

Landslide Due to the variety of factors that lead to landslides, it is possible that climate change could indirectly affect the conditions for landslides. More frequent and more intense rains may cause more moisture-induced landslides. Warmer temperatures and more frequent drought conditions may lead to more fires, which could destabilize soils and make future landslide events more likely.
