A FABULOUS FOURTH IN WYOMING Enjoy Fireworks, County Fairs, and Local History
As you’ll read on Page 1, our team at CHB goes all-out for the Fourth of July — and the same can be said of the rest of our state!
If you’re passing through Wyoming and would like to visit Independence Rock, you can find directions and more information at WyoParks.wyo.gov. July is a great time to stop by the historic site. While you’re in our state, consider spending time at a county fair as well!
Wyoming is known for its patriotic celebrations. These include the pancake breakfast, rodeo, and “Town Square Shootout” in Jackson Hole (described as “a lively reenactment of frontier justice”), plus the Alcova Reservoir fireworks show near Casper, which many folks watch from their boats. However, one of our state’s most American landmarks is available to visit not only on the Fourth, but year round: Independence Rock. The Independence Rock State Historic Site is a favorite place to visit among the CHB staff. It’s a landmark located along the wagon trail that early pioneers used to travel west over 150 years ago. More than 5,000 of those folks stopped to carve their names into a particularly eye-catching rock formation that stands 136 feet tall and sprawls over more than 24 acres. It’s nicknamed the Register of the Desert. Today, Independence Rock is considered “a testament to their journey” and “a poignant reminder of the sacrifice and fortitude of those who knew a better future lay before them” as VisitCasper.com puts it. Those are qualities to be proud of!
July is county fair month, and the whole state fills up with small celebrations leading up to the Wyoming State Fair August 16–20.
Apart from our very own Platte County Fair & Rodeo that kicks off July 29, a few of our favorites are Laramie Jubilee Days in Laramie, the Central Wyoming Fair in Casper, Cheyenne Frontier Days in Cheyenne, and the Red Desert Roundup in Rock Springs.
Frankly, we could go on for pages! To learn more about those celebrations and Wyoming’s other county fairs, visit CountyFairGrounds.net.
