prints a kiss of affection on the dewy lips. A pretty pic ture, is it not? What does it mean? It means that perfect love and trust exist between the mother and child. And that is just as it should be. It connotes a normal status in that home. But now let us change the picture. Suppose that the child should cry out with terror and shrink back with affright every time its mother approached it! What would that indicate? It would mean that there was something radically wrong with either the mother or the child, or with both. The relation of trust is an index of a normal condition; that of doubt is an index of an abnormal condi tion. The proposition is proved, but in order to impress the lesson still further, I will illustrate once more. One of the most beautiful of human relations is that subsisting between husband and wife. Shall I tell you what is the place here on earth that is nearest heaven? Although I do not profess to be very wise, I can tell you the exact spot. It is the home in which there are perfect love and confidence between husband and wife. There you have the normal and the happy home. On the other hand, permit me to name the place on earth which is nearest to the locality which we mean when we point downward. It is the home where suspicion and dis trust have crept between husband and wife! It is where the “ eternal triangle”- has done its deadly work, and has driven out all hymeneal joy! No further illustrations are needed, although they might be indefinitely multiplied. Our proposition is proved: in all human relations, mutual confidence spells a normal condi tion; while lack of it, or doubt, means that something has occurred to disturb the normal order. Since that is true in human life, why may not the same principle hold in man’s relation to God? Is not the normal status for man to trust God, the Ultimate Reality? Is it not abnormal to doubt God and His truth? There is something that is ultimate and eternal, because there must be. Every finite entity is dependent upon something else, Therefore there must be something that is independent— the uncaused Cause of all finite and dependent existences. Does it not stand to reason that no soul can be happy and stabilized if it is not in tune with that which is ultimate and absolute? Would a ship be safe in a storm if it were anchored only to a reed? Can a soul feel safe and joyous if it is anchored to finite and mutable things? No! no! Let us get right with God, the Ultimate, Self-existent and Immutable Real ity. We can get right with Him only by trusting Him, and saying, “ Father, I put my hand in thine; lead thou me in the way in which I should go.” > It is true, you must posit your faith in a worthy object or person. It will not do to trust a rogue. Neither will it be profitable to trust a poor, weak, unstable person. You cannot trust everybody or everything. If you do, you will be disappointed. However, I want to appeal to every regen erate person whether, when you have trusted our Lord Jesus Christ, He has proved Himself untrue; whether He has disappointed you. Along this line I have had a real and convincing experience. There was a time when I put my faith in my intellectual processes. I said, “ I will solve all the problems of life and religion just as I solve mathe matical problems— by reason.” For a while I went proudly on my way, and even felt much exhilaration in my quest. But do you know what occurred by and by? I found that my rationalistic processes had fooled me, disappointed me; led me into deeper and deeper doubt, and finally into the darkest agnosticism. Oh, the anguish of those days! Let

Christianity and Liberalism By J. Gresham Machen, D . D.
