ORTHODONTIST BY PROFESSION, TEACHER BY HEART How I’ve Taught Others Throughout My Life
Teachers play a valuable role in our society. They teach generations of students about various aspects of the world, which helps put them on the path toward success while also learning much about themselves. Without a teacher’s help, many students would never find their passion or discover which career path will be best for them. Many of us have fond memories of teachers in our lives, whether they were school teachers from our youth, educators
orthodontics. And I did that while running my own office. Running into doctors in our community whom I used to teach is always interesting. I went from being their teacher to their colleague! If you’re teaching others, it’s essential that you remember the primary goals of what you’re doing. You should want to help your students become better than you are at the subject at hand. You’re passing your knowledge on so they can be better at what
who taught our children, or a mentor who opened our eyes to the beauty of our careers. At the beginning of May, we celebrate Teachers’ Day, which calls on us to honor the teachers in our lives for the sacrifices they made to educate others.
they do, and your lessons should help them hone their craft. You also need to be open to what your students have to say. They might have a different perspective on a situation, and you may even learn something from listening to them. When you’re open to your students’ points of view and making efforts to help them grow, you know you’re being the best teacher you can be.
“I’m teaching others on a daily
basis while at work, and the knowledge that I’m imparting will help them find success in their own endeavors. ”
I have been a teacher in many different moments of my life. My first teaching
experience came when I taught my cousin to swim when I was only 8 years old. As I grew older, my passion for teaching others never wavered, and I never passed up an opportunity to help someone learn something new. I’m teaching
It’s also important to keep in mind that learning is a lifelong journey. We don’t stop learning when we get out of school; we continue to learn throughout adulthood about many topics relevant to our lives. School provides you with the basic education you need to get started, but life experiences and gaining knowledge from skilled experts help you to grow into new roles. Don’t shy away from learning opportunities! Take some time this May to share your appreciation for the teachers in your life. From school teachers to parents to mentors, many people have helped shape us into who
others on a daily basis while at work, and the knowledge that I’m imparting will help them find success in their own endeavors.
I regularly teach our patients about the importance of oral health so that they can maintain a healthy smile, but I also teach them valuable organizational skills to ensure their treatment is successful. Without proper organization, doing everything we ask of you can be difficult. I also try to teach our younger patients how to be responsible. They have to participate in their treatment to continue to have healthy and beautiful smiles, so I try to help them understand why their smiles will be their responsibility as they get older. I’m even a teacher to my staff! I teach them techniques that allow them to assist our patients better. While much of my teaching experience has taken place outside of the classroom, I did work as an associate professor for 14 years at University of California San Francisco. I taught biomechanics and orthodontics to residents pursuing a career in dentistry or
we are today and provided us with the knowledge we needed to succeed in life. Happy Teachers’ Day!

The Truth About Mail-Order Orthodontics
AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS!
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a huge increase in our ability to order things online. Some people have started to get their groceries delivered directly to their homes, while others get fast food or restaurant meals delivered to them at work or home. For everything else you could need, you can turn to Amazon, which will deliver just about anything within a couple of days. In recent

If the aligner doesn’t fit properly or the patient is not an ideal candidate for treatment, the aligners will cause irreversible damage, including tooth loss and chewing impairment.
months, people have been ordering something else online for convenience’s sake, potentially impacting them for years to come. While watching YouTube or scrolling through social media, you may have stumbled upon an advertisement for mail-order or direct- to-consumer orthodontics. These companies sell clear aligners designed to straighten your teeth. You don’t even need to have an appointment to place an order.
Not only do these mail-order aligners put you at risk of permanently damaging your smile, but they also cost quite a lot more than advertised. Most payment plans offered by orthodontic offices offer zero-interest packages, but mail-order options come with a high-interest rate, so you’ll often pay more for a much worse option. Those that have tried mail-order options have run into issues with their teeth and almost always have to see an orthodontist to get everything repaired and reverse any damage. Mail-order orthodontics sounds too good to be true,
You may be wondering how mail-order orthodontics are possible without an exam, and the simple answer is that it’s not really feasible. These companies claim their treatment is entirely “cosmetic,” but anyone who has worn an aligner knows that’s not true.
and that’s because they are. Don’t risk damaging your smile for the sake of convenience. See an orthodontist instead — we’ll ensure your treatment is successful.

The Need for In-Person Exams
With the introduction of mail-order orthodontics and the teledentistry industry, some individuals have wondered whether seeing an orthodontist in person for their treatment is necessary. If you’ve already had orthodontic treatment, you may be confused about how this treatment method is possible. Understand that mail-order orthodontics and teledentistry are not a replacement for traditional in-person orthodontic treatment. Most who choose this path and avoid seeing an orthodontist in-office will experience many issues with their teeth and smile going forward. If you read our article on page 2, you learned all about mail-order orthodontics and the dangers they pose. These mail-order companies like to claim that their aligners and treatment are for cosmetic purposes only, but this can’t be true when it comes
to orthodontic treatment. Moving teeth is a complex biological process. When done poorly, it can lead to tooth loss, overcrowding, and pain. Some have even tried to straighten their front teeth with mail-order appliances, only for a gap to open on their back teeth, disrupting chewing functions. It’s not just the need for accurate orthodontic appliances that require patients to see an orthodontist before beginning treatment. An orthodontist will also examine the patient’s teeth and mouth to ensure that orthodontic treatment is possible and will be successful. Periodontal probing is necessary for orthodontic and dental treatments and can not be conducted virtually. It has to be done in person by a dental professional. If the patient has periodontitis (gum disease) and proceeds with orthodontic treatment, they
could experience tooth loss, hypersensitivity, root decay, and aesthetic concerns.
There are many other actions that can not be performed virtually that are necessary for orthodontic success. Without seeing the patient in person, a dental professional cannot observe if a patient’s jaw clicks or functions properly when opening or closing. They can’t tell how a patient’s gums feel or if there is any potential for noncompliance. Additionally, the patient won’t be able to ask a dental professional any questions or get the information they need to ensure treatment is successful. In-person exams are essential for successful orthodontic treatment. Don’t take a chance on mail-order orthodontics. Give us a call today!

3 Hotels to Visit for a Great Night’s Sleep
If you’ve ever planned a vacation, you’ve probably picked a few key places to visit, like a museum, restaurant, or historic site. However, a new vacation trend is becoming increasingly popular: sleep tourism, where a traveler plans their entire vacation to get the best quality sleep during their time away.
PARK HYATT NEW YORK (NYC): This hotel features a “Sleep Suite” designed by Bryte, a company that uses AI to facilitate sleep. The room touts an intuitive “Restorative Bed,” which adjusts to relieve pressure points and controls climate temperature throughout the night, according to each
person’s needs. This suite also includes an array of soothing essential oils, a diffuser, and books about sleep. THE CADOGAN, A BELMOND HOTEL (LONDON): This hotel offers a “sleep concierge,” which boasts prerecorded sleep meditations and a pillow selection menu for every type of sleeper. Sleepers can even benefit from the hotel’s weighted blankets, scented pillow mist service, and their proprietary sleep tea.
Before, common goals for vacations were to eat delicious foods, stay up late to see the sights, and fit in as much activity as possible. However, this left travelers completely exhausted. And as our culture continues to understand how important sleep is to our health, more people are prioritizing rest even while they’re away.
But being a sleep tourist is about more than going to bed early and ensuring you get your
recommended eight hours of rest. It’s about building your vacation around sleep. Some hotels even offer rooms tailored to sleep tourists, with amenities so popular that their sleep options have become regular offerings.
ZEDWELL (LONDON): The first ever “sleep- centric” hotel, Zedwell uses recycled materials to insulate every door, wall, and floor from sound. This hotel also purifies the air within the hotel and fills every space with ambient lighting.
So, if sleep tourism sounds like something you’d be interested in, here are three hotels that help you catch those z’s.
