Executive Summary from The Office of the Executive Director
The year 2024 marked a period of remarkable growth and strategic advancement for AfriLabs under the leadership of the Executive Director, Anna Ekeledo. With a focus on fostering innovation, catalyzing cross-border collaborations, and championing Africa’s digital transformation, AfriLabs expanded its reach, influence, and impact across the continent and beyond. Through high-profile engagements, transformative partnerships, and bold leadership, AfriLabs strengthened its impact, ensuring that African innovators have a seat at the table in global conversations on technology, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation. This section highlights the deliberate efforts made in driving the organization’s mission to expand AfriLabs initiatives across borders, through engagements at high-profile forums, advocacy for progressive policies, and the formation of transformative partnerships to foster innovation, create opportunities, and advance sustainable development across Africa. As AfriLabs sets its sights on becoming the premier global platform for African innovation and entrepreneurship, we reflect on the key achievements of 2024 and outline the strategic priorities for 2025. Championing Policy Advocacy for African Innovators Advocacy is at the heart of AfriLabs’ mission, ensuring that African startups and innovators operate in environments that foster growth. In 2024, the Executive Director amplified this agenda on global platforms, speaking at DCO General Assembly, the Global DPI Summit, the Global Inclusivity and AI: Africa Conference, and the UN General Assembly (UNGA79). These engagements positioned AfriLabs as a key voice in the innovation policy space, reinforcing the need for regulatory frameworks that support startup growth, digital transformation, and cross-border business operations in Africa.

Convening Leaders to Shape Africa’s Digital Future The AfriLabs Ministerial Roundtable at the AfriLabs Annual Gathering 2024 provided a critical platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue on Africa’s digital economy. With the theme “Building an Equitable Digital Future for Africa,” the roundtable brought together policymakers, innovators, and private sector leaders to discuss strategies for resource mobilization, innovation support, and cross-border collaboration. Through these dialogues, AfriLabs strengthened its partnerships with key organizations and solidified its role as a convener of critical discussions on Africa’s digital transformation. Expanding AfriLabs’ Global Influence and Partnerships The Office of the Executive Director played a key role in securing partnerships that are reshaping Africa’s innovation landscape. Some key collaborations included: • Ministry of Investment, Saudi Arabia – Facilitating new market access and investment opportunities. • Korea-Africa Foundation – Strengthening cross-border startup exchanges. • Africa Creatives Alliance – Driving innovation at the intersection of technology and the creative economy. • Beyond partnerships, AfriLabs’ presence at major global events such as LEAP 2024, the India-Africa Entrepreneurship Summit, and MIPAD opened doors to new funding opportunities and showcased Africa’s innovation success stories on the global stage. From Progress to Possibilities: AfriLabs’ Milestones and Envisioning the Future of Africa’s Innovation Ecosystem
Ajibola Odukoya Chief Operating Officer at AfriLabs
Africa’s Digital Independence is a Critical Imperative Technology is the battleground for tomorrow’s economic dominance, and Africa cannot afford to be sidelined. There is the urgency in securing Africa’s digital independence every day—ensuring that our startups have access to capital, our policymakers are shaping favorable regulations, and our innovators have the infrastructure to build world-class solutions. This is more than a mission; it is an imperative for Africa’s future. The global tech race is in full swing, and our place in it must be defined by leadership, not dependency. Since AfriLabs was founded in 2011, our vision has been unwavering: to cultivate a thriving innovation ecosystem in Africa, one that stimulates economic growth and social development through the power of high-potential entrepreneurs. Impact: Expansion into new frontiers, reinforcing innovation ecosystems across Africa.
Reflecting on 2024, it’s clear that we have had yet another landmark year at AfriLabs. Our network has not only grown in size but also in influence, with an impressive expansion from 467 to 519 innovation hubs across 53 countries in over 220 cities. This growth is not just about numbers—it is about extending our impact to new frontiers. Notably, this year saw AfriLabs establish a presence in previously unrepresented cities, including Stellenbosch, South Africa, and Mokhotlong, Lesotho, reinforcing our commitment to fostering innovation in diverse and dynamic ecosystems. Each new hub brings fresh ideas, energy, and opportunities, further strengthening AfriLabs’ role as the backbone of Africa’s innovation landscape. Expanding AfriLabs Connect as a Unified Digital Ecosystem A significant milestone this year was the expansion of AfriLabs Connect, Africa’s premier ecosystem engagement platform. This digital public infrastructure now unites over 7,000 Pan-African ecosystem stakeholders, including governments, hubs, DFIs, academia, startups, and media, breaking physical barriers and fostering a connected innovation ecosystem. This is just the beginning of what we envision as the central hub for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and growth across the continent. To further enhance accessibility and engagement, AfriConnect will be launching its mobile application, improving reach and penetration across the ecosystem. Additionally, the platform will integrate AI capabilities through Amari AI, developed by AfriLabs, the same intelligent assistant that powers AfriLabs Academy. This integration will create a

Global Footprints & Strategic Partnerships Partnerships have also taken a giant leap forward, strengthening our ability to support startups and innovation hubs. The collaboration with the Ministry of Investment, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is opening doors for African startups to expand into new markets, access investment opportunities, and benefit from strategic advisory services. Likewise, our work with Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique (UM6P) and UM6P Ventures has unlocked new investment channels and co-innovation projects, directly benefiting African entrepreneurs. Furthermore, our growing alliances with the World Trade Center, Korea Africa Foundation, International Telecommunication Union, 2X Global, and the Digital Cooperation Organization demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that African startups and innovators have a global presence and access to critical resources. Driving Gender Inclusion Program in Africa’s Innovation Ecosystem On the initiatives front, programs such as the RevUp Women, continue to make a profound impact in driving gender inclusion within Africa’s innovation ecosystem. The program has provided over a million dollars in support to women-led startups and SMEs, equipping them with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities needed to scale and succeed.
15
Empowering women in entrepreneurship is not just a matter of equity, it is a strategic imperative for Africa’s digital transformation. Women entrepreneurs are building groundbreaking solutions across industries, and by investing in their growth, we are unlocking untapped potential that will drive economic progress and technological advancement across the continent. Showcasing African Innovation at the Global Stage Our presence at global events such as the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), GITEX, Global Startups Award and the Transform Africa Summit has further underscored Africa’s growing role in the global tech landscape. In addition to these gatherings, we participated at the Global Startup Awards Africa Summit, BIG 2024 (Bpifrance Inno Génération) in Europe, and the Annual Investment Meeting Congress in Abu Dhabi, as well as the Qatar Africa Business Forum and VivaTech, Paris. These platforms have enabled us to showcase the incredible talent and innovation thriving on the continent, while fostering vital connections with international partners. It is in these moments that we witness the tangible benefits of our work—how a hub in Lagos can seamlessly connect with investors in Silicon Valley, or collaborate with developers in Nairobi, driving meaningful partnerships that propel Africa’s digital transformation on the global stage. AfriLabs Moonshot Initiative Addressing Africa’s funding challenge However, our journey is not without challenges. Funding remains a significant hurdle for many of our Moonshot initiatives targeted at generating $1 trillion in the next decade. Yet, we remain undeterred, pushing forward with innovative strategies to bridge these gaps. Our advocacy work, which has resulted in nine Startup Acts, continues to shape policy environments that are more conducive to entrepreneurship and innovation. Africa’s Opportunity to lead AI revolution The emergence of AI technology marks a turning point in global innovation, and Africa must move even faster to remain competitive. Unlike past technological waves such as social media, where Africa largely played the role of consumers or content providers. AI now offers the opportunity for the continent to actively shape the entire ecosystem, from development and deployment to policy and commercialization. Recognizing this transformative potential, AfriLabs is placing AI at the core of our future efforts. In 2024, we hosted the Llama 3.1 Impact Hackathon in Kigali, Rwanda (October 8–10), an initiative funded by Meta and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that called on over 100+ innovators from across Sub-Saharan Africa to create AI solutions addressing critical social challenges, including gender sensitivity and linguistic diversity. Complementing this initiative, our comprehensive AI reports such as the “Landscape Analysis of AI Startups in Africa” and the study on AI ethical policies offer unparalleled insights into the AI startup ecosystem and the ethical frameworks necessary for responsible innovation on the continent. Through strategic collaborations with partners including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Intel Corporation, and Digital Africa, AfriLabs is committed to advancing AI-driven innovation, bridging the digital divide, and ensuring that African innovators are not left behind in this revolution.
16
Scaling Knowledge for Impact to Equip Innovators The continued development of AfriLabs Academy is a game-changer in equipping African entrepreneurs and innovation hub managers with the skills and knowledge they need to scale their ventures. Significant progress has already been made, with the platform now serving enrollees across 70 countries, offering courses in both Anglophone and Francophone languages to ensure inclusivity. The Digital Entrepreneurship Skills course alone has attracted 1435+ students from over 30 African and non-African countries, with Uganda leading in enrollments. Notably, 60% of learners have made substantial progress, and 1126+ have successfully obtained their certificates. Looking ahead, AfriLabs Academy is set to expand beyond its current curriculum by evolving into a crowdsourced marketplace of knowledge, enabling experts from across the continent to contribute specialized courses and create a dynamic, ever-growing repository of skills tailored to Africa’s innovation needs. Additionally, the integration of AI through Amari will provide personalized, assisted learning experiences, helping users navigate content more efficiently and receive tailored recommendations based on their learning paths. With our revenue projections targeting $112 million through grants and Moonshot initiatives by 2027, we are confident that the next chapter for AfriLabs will be one of greater impact, deeper partnerships, and more transformative change. Advancing Africa’s Digital Workforce AfriLabs is leveraging its extensive network to transform Africa into a formidable player in the global service industry. Through strategic partnerships with innovative platforms like remote.work, AfriLabs has facilitated the creation of over 100,000 job vacancies for African hubs and digital skills personnel. These roles empower local talent to engage in high-quality work—from delivering top-tier BPO services to international clients to driving critical digital transformation across the continent. By tapping into Africa’s digital workforce, AfriLabs is not only fueling economic growth but also enhancing the continent’s competitive edge on the global stage, positioning Africa as a key contributor to the worldwide service economy. Limitless Possibilities Awaits Africa Innovators Our story is one of hope and transformation — a testament to a continent rising to meet its immense potential, fueled by a young, dynamic population eager to shape the future. We are honored to be part of this journey and remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering the next generation of African entrepreneurs. But we cannot do it alone. To unlock the full promise of Africa’s innovation ecosystem, we invite partners, funders, and supporters to join us. Your partnership, investment, and contributions will help amplify our impact, nurture even more trailblazers, and accelerate sustainable development across the continent. Together, we can turn
limitless possibilities into lasting realities. Ajibola Odukoya Chief Operating Officer

In addition, the organization embraced digital transformation by adopting Seamless HR and Slack, which have streamlined workflows, improved communication, and enhanced productivity. These digital tools have played a crucial role in increasing operational efficiency, benefiting both employees and the organization as a whole. Creating a Positive and Inclusive Work Culture A strong and positive workplace culture remained a key focus for the People Management Department in 2024. Through consistent employee engagement activities, inclusivity- driven initiatives, and wellness programs, AfriLabs has cultivated an environment where employees feel valued, motivated, and empowered. Regular team-building activities have strengthened collaboration, while open feedback mechanisms have ensured that employees’ voices are heard, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Additionally, mental health initiatives, including workshops, therapy, and meditation sessions, have enhanced overall well-being, helping to create a resilient and high- performing workforce. Greenovations Africa
Greenovations Africa is a pioneering initiative
dedicated to fostering green entrepreneurship across the continent, with a particular focus on empowering women and youth. Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable solutions to Africa’s environmental challenges, the program provides aspiring green innovators with critical resources, mentorship, and market insights to scale their ideas into viable, impactful businesses.
The program implemented by AfriLabs, operates with support from the International Development Research Centre, alongside strategic partnerships with institutions such as the United Nations University Vice Rectorate in Europe (UNU-ViE), the Pan African University of Water and Environmental Sciences (PAUWES), Venture Capital 4 Africa (VC4A), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Through these collaborations, the program equips startups with the tools they need to navigate the green business landscape, develop sustainable financial strategies, and connect with potential investors. The impact of Greenovations Africa is evident in the tangible successes of its participating entrepreneurs. Many of the startups have secured additional funding, honed their business models, and made their first product sales, marking a crucial step toward financial sustainability. By providing tailored financial planning support, gender-specific funding insights, and guidance on crafting compelling pitch decks, the program has ensured that its beneficiaries are well-positioned for growth. Notably, 60% of entrepreneurs completing the incubation program have been women, demonstrating Greenovations Africa’s commitment to gender inclusivity in the green economy. Beyond capacity-building, the program actively bridges the gap between green startups and the market by offering access to critical consumer data and competitive insights. This has translated into increased sales and market penetration for many of the participating enterprises. Additionally, all female entrepreneurs who completed the mentorship program post-seed funding have successfully leveraged their newfound skills and networks to expand their businesses.
25
The real impact of Greenovations Africa, however, is best understood through the stories of the entrepreneurs whose lives and communities have been transformed by the initiative. Agritech Analytics, one of the program’s standout startups, has trained over 4,400 women smallholder farmers in precision farming, financial management, and sustainable agricultural practices. This training has not only empowered women to take on leadership roles but has also facilitated access to credit, with 900 women farmers using Agritech Analytics’ 95% accurate Crop Yields Prediction Tool as collateral for loans to purchase essential farm inputs. Mvutu, has increased employment opportunities for women in its areas of operation. The startup, which focuses on solar-powered cold chain solutions, has hired three women as store managers for its innovative solar greenbox products. These roles provide stable income and opportunities for career growth, reinforcing the economic and social benefits of sustainable entrepreneurship. Schrodinger Technologies Ltd. has made significant strides in addressing water scarcity through its solar-powered water stations. These stations not only provide clean water to underserved communities but also offer training programs to educate residents on sustainable water management. UNFPA STRETCH Programmes
The UNFPA Stretch Programmes aim to mobilize community support for innovators to champion the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Mental Health (MH), Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR), and Early and Uninterrupted Pregnancy (EUP). By identifying innovative solutions and building the capacity of hubs, the initiative plays a crucial role in tackling pressing social issues across East and Southern Africa.
Funded by UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional Office (UNFPA ESARO), and implemented by AfriLabs, the programme ran from February 2022 to November 2024, supporting young innovators to develop sustainable, market-ready solutions that address critical health and rights challenges. The impact of the programme is evident in its key achievements. Over 90 young innovators were engaged, with 20 finalists advancing to bootcamp, incubation, and consultation phases. This engagement has provided them with essential mentorship, funding, and market insights, enabling them to refine and scale their innovations. Among the programme’s successes, 10 startups have developed Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), four of which have successfully launched into the market. Additionally, four startups under the We Scale Hacklab and Mental Health & ASRHR programs have received a total of $60,000 in scale and seed funding. These investments have helped startups expand their market reach and impact. Market validation has been another critical component, with 10 startups refining their business models through direct customer feedback. As a result, four startups have established a stable customer base, while another four have successfully secured follow-on funding. These milestones underscore the programme’s role in preparing startups for long-term sustainability and investment readiness. The programme has made significant contributions to addressing real-life challenges in Africa by tackling gender-based violence and reproductive health issues through innovation. Initiatives like the “We Scale” and “Mental Health and

LLAMA 3.1 IMPACT SSA Hackathon
The Llama 3.1 Impact SSA Hackathon is a transformative initiative aimed at developing an adaptable and scalable
gender sanitization engine tailored to the linguistic and cultural diversity of 17 African languages. This project seeks to address two critical challenges: gender bias in AI- generated content and the digital divide in linguistically diverse regions like Africa.
Funded by Meta and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and implemented by AfriLabs, the hackathon serves as the first phase of a broader effort to create AI-driven solutions that promote gender inclusion and mitigate bias. Participants leveraged AI tools such as Meta’s Llama and adopted open-source practices to encourage global adoption and ethical discussions on AI in Africa.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the project include:
■ Number of mentor applications received and reviewed from the AfriLabs community. ■ Number of mentors onboarded and matched to program requirements. ■ Number of hackathon applications received. ■ Number of participants selected and confirmed for the hackathon (target: 100). ■ Completion rate of travel and accommodation logistics before the event. ■ Timely setup of the hackathon venue, including all technical requirements. ■ Number of participant kits prepared and distributed at the event. ■ Number of sessions conducted during the hackathon (e.g., AI development, pitch preparation). ■ Number of mentors and technical experts facilitating sessions and teamwork. ■ Percentage of teams completing and presenting pitches during the hackathon. ■ Number of products assessed using the pitch scoring guide. The impact of the hackathon has been significant, with 19 solutions developed by 19 teams. The top eight teams have advanced to the next phase, where they will receive additional support through mentorship, incubation/accelerator training by AfriLabs, and assistance in applying for the Llama Impact Grants. These teams will also receive additional funding based on their product maturity and market readiness.

UNDP Timbuktoo Mapping Study
Across Africa, entrepreneurs and startups are building solutions that have the potential to transform industries, create jobs, and improve millions of lives. However, many of these innovators face significant challenges - limited access to funding, fragmented support systems, and regulatory hurdles that slow down growth. Recognizing these barriers, the Timbuktoo initiative, launched by UNDP, and AfriLabs as the implementing partner is an ambitious effort to revolutionize the African startup ecosystem by mobilizing $1 billion in catalytic and commercial capital. Timbuktoo aims to impact 100 million lives, create 10 million dignified jobs, and establish a network of thematic hubs across the continent. Each hub focuses on a high-growth sector—from FinTech and AgriTech to HealthTech and Creative Industries—offering entrepreneurs the resources they need to thrive. To lay the foundation for this ambitious vision, a comprehensive mapping exercise was undertaken to identify the key players, challenges, and opportunities in Africa’s startup ecosystem. This research spanned all 54 African countries, providing crucial insights that would shape the strategy of the Timbuktoo initiative. Mapping the Gaps, Unlocking Opportunities Through this exercise, a vast network of innovation hubs, investors, startups, policymakers, and service providers was mapped across the continent. The research uncovered where support structures were strong and where major gaps remained insights that would directly inform how Timbuktoo’s investments and interventions could be most effective. One of the critical findings was the unequal distribution of startup support systems. While certain cities—such as Lagos, Nairobi, Cape Town, and Accra—have thriving startup scenes, other regions remain largely underserved. For example, startups in landlocked and rural areas often struggle to access the same level of funding, mentorship, and infrastructure as their counterparts in major urban centers.
