At its core, the program aims to cultivate a dynamic ecosystem where innovation thrives within governance structures. By deploying talented tech innovators into various AU departments, the fellowship fosters collaboration between government officials and the broader innovation community. This approach ensures that African governments remain agile, data-driven, and better positioned to serve their citizens. Fellows undergo an immersive experience, analyzing challenges within AU systems, identifying inefficiencies, and co-creating innovative solutions with unit members. Through their work, they not only enhance internal capacities but also leave a lasting impact by developing tailored digital tools that optimize governance and service delivery. Over the course of two cohorts of the fellowship, significant milestones have been achieved. Thirty-four young Africans have been strategically placed within AU institutions, actively working to transform digital processes and policy implementation. Their efforts have led to the development of at least three new technology-driven solutions, each designed to strengthen AU operations and improve citizen participation. Moreover, their presence has catalyzed a closer relationship between the AU and Africa’s innovation ecosystem, fostering partnerships that will continue to drive digital transformation beyond the program’s duration. One of the most profound impacts of the fellowship has been the enhancement of AU personnel’s capacity to integrate and sustain digital innovations. By working closely with fellows, AU staff have gained critical skills in leveraging technology for governance, ensuring that the solutions introduced remain sustainable and effective long after the fellows’ tenure. Furthermore, at least one major policy or participatory process within the AU has been optimized through the introduction of tech-based solutions, reinforcing the program’s role in advancing good governance.
