Greenovations Africa
Greenovations Africa is a pioneering initiative
dedicated to fostering green entrepreneurship across the continent, with a particular focus on empowering women and youth. Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable solutions to Africa’s environmental challenges, the program provides aspiring green innovators with critical resources, mentorship, and market insights to scale their ideas into viable, impactful businesses.
The program implemented by AfriLabs, operates with support from the International Development Research Centre, alongside strategic partnerships with institutions such as the United Nations University Vice Rectorate in Europe (UNU-ViE), the Pan African University of Water and Environmental Sciences (PAUWES), Venture Capital 4 Africa (VC4A), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Through these collaborations, the program equips startups with the tools they need to navigate the green business landscape, develop sustainable financial strategies, and connect with potential investors. The impact of Greenovations Africa is evident in the tangible successes of its participating entrepreneurs. Many of the startups have secured additional funding, honed their business models, and made their first product sales, marking a crucial step toward financial sustainability. By providing tailored financial planning support, gender-specific funding insights, and guidance on crafting compelling pitch decks, the program has ensured that its beneficiaries are well-positioned for growth. Notably, 60% of entrepreneurs completing the incubation program have been women, demonstrating Greenovations Africa’s commitment to gender inclusivity in the green economy. Beyond capacity-building, the program actively bridges the gap between green startups and the market by offering access to critical consumer data and competitive insights. This has translated into increased sales and market penetration for many of the participating enterprises. Additionally, all female entrepreneurs who completed the mentorship program post-seed funding have successfully leveraged their newfound skills and networks to expand their businesses.
