LLAMA 3.1 IMPACT SSA Hackathon

The Llama 3.1 Impact SSA Hackathon is a transformative initiative aimed at developing an adaptable and scalable

gender sanitization engine tailored to the linguistic and cultural diversity of 17 African languages. This project seeks to address two critical challenges: gender bias in AI- generated content and the digital divide in linguistically diverse regions like Africa.

Funded by Meta and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and implemented by AfriLabs, the hackathon serves as the first phase of a broader effort to create AI-driven solutions that promote gender inclusion and mitigate bias. Participants leveraged AI tools such as Meta’s Llama and adopted open-source practices to encourage global adoption and ethical discussions on AI in Africa.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the project include:

■ Number of mentor applications received and reviewed from the AfriLabs community. ■ Number of mentors onboarded and matched to program requirements. ■ Number of hackathon applications received. ■ Number of participants selected and confirmed for the hackathon (target: 100). ■ Completion rate of travel and accommodation logistics before the event. ■ Timely setup of the hackathon venue, including all technical requirements. ■ Number of participant kits prepared and distributed at the event. ■ Number of sessions conducted during the hackathon (e.g., AI development, pitch preparation). ■ Number of mentors and technical experts facilitating sessions and teamwork. ■ Percentage of teams completing and presenting pitches during the hackathon. ■ Number of products assessed using the pitch scoring guide. The impact of the hackathon has been significant, with 19 solutions developed by 19 teams. The top eight teams have advanced to the next phase, where they will receive additional support through mentorship, incubation/accelerator training by AfriLabs, and assistance in applying for the Llama Impact Grants. These teams will also receive additional funding based on their product maturity and market readiness.
