ONEPlanET: Driving Sustainable Innovation in Africa’s Water-Energy- Food Nexus

The ONEPlanET project is a transformative initiative aimed at fostering sustainable development across Africa through integrated approaches within the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus. Funded by the European Commission and running from November 2022 to October 2025, the project is led by RINA-C and brings together a diverse consortium of partners from Europe and Africa, including research institutions, policy think tanks, and private sector organizations. By leveraging data-driven solutions, cross-sector collaboration, and stakeholder engagement, ONEPlanET is positioning itself as a key driver of Africa’s green energy transition.

The project seeks to provide policymakers, researchers, and investors with cutting- edge tools to support informed decision-making in clean energy generation and sustainable resource use. The core objective is to develop a robust and open-source modeling framework that simulates and evaluates pathways towards a sustainable future. This model will incorporate various factors such as economic, social, and climate constraints to ensure holistic and impactful decision-making processes. A crucial aspect of ONEPlanET’s work is its participatory approach, which involves building local capacity and fostering community engagement in key African regions. The project is actively developing a knowledge hub that includes training materials, capacity-building programs, and platforms for knowledge exchange. This ensures that local policymakers, businesses, and citizens have access to the latest insights and tools necessary to drive sustainable change. Furthermore, through collaborations with institutions such as Strathmore University in Kenya, the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, and the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Cape Verde, the project bridges the gap between research and real-world application. AfriLabs is leading the project’s communication strategy, ensuring the dissemination of results through engaging with target audiences and developing a stakeholder community to sustain the project’s impact beyond its expected outputs.
